The Pathway To The Natural Gas Industry: Financial Development, Coal Consumption, And Carbon Dioxide Emissions In P.R. China, Teng Tong, Jaime Ortiz, Haibo Wang

International Business and Entrepreneurship Faculty Publications

This paper revisits the causal links between financial development, coal consumption, and CO2 emissions in P.R. China over the 1977–2017 period to validate the development of its natural gas industry. It uses a Bootstrap ARDL bound test with structural breaks to establish stationarity, short- and long-run dynamics, and causality of the series. The results show there are no long-run relationships among these three variables, but a Granger causality test does indicate the presence of both a two-way Granger causality between coal consumption and CO2 emissions, and a one-way Granger causality running from financial development to both coal consumption and CO2 …

Governmental Restrictions And Real Estate Investor Risk Perception, Carina Kaiser, Julia Freybote, Wolfgang Schäfers Mar 2023

Governmental Restrictions And Real Estate Investor Risk Perception, Carina Kaiser, Julia Freybote, Wolfgang Schäfers

Business Faculty Publications and Presentations

We investigate the impact of governmental restrictions on the short-term risk perception, as proxied by the going-in cap rate, of investors in regional and neighborhood shopping centers. We use the COVID-19 pandemic as a natural experiment and proxy for the length and severity of COVID-19 restrictions with the political affiliation of state governors. Using a sample of 40 metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs) across 27 states over the period of 2018 to 2021, we find that for states with Republican governors, which proxy for shorter and fewer COVID-19 restrictions, investors in regional malls required a lower going-in cap rate in the …

Tax Planning Under The Inflation Reduction Act Of 2022, Martin A. Goldberg, James N. Mohs

Accounting Faculty Publications

The Inflation Reduction Act of2022 (the "Act"), signed by President Biden on 8/16/2022, contained an array of tax provisions that should be considered in tax planning for clients.

The Act is a budget reconciliation bill whose origins can be traced back to the American Rescue Plan Act of2021, as well as the American Jobs Plan (AJP) and the American Families Plan (AFP). Each plan contained aspects of tax incentives for green energy construction, conservation, and infrastructure improvements, as well as for healthcare benefits. What we see in the Act is the last iteration of these developing tax incentives.

The Act …

Predicting Mobility Using Limited Data During Early Stages Of A Pandemic, Michael T. Lash, S. Sajeesh, Özgür M. Araz Mar 2023

Predicting Mobility Using Limited Data During Early Stages Of A Pandemic, Michael T. Lash, S. Sajeesh, Özgür M. Araz

Department of Marketing: Faculty Publications

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed consumer behavior substantially. In this study, we explore the drivers of consumer mobility in several metropolitan areas in the United States under the perceived risks of COVID-19. We capture multiple dimensions of perceived risk using local and national cases and death counts of COVID-19, along with real-time Google Trends data for personal protective equipment (PPE). While Google Trends data are popular inputs in many studies, the risk of multicollinearity escalates with the addition of more relevant terms. Therefore, multicollinearity-alleviating methods are needed to appropriately leverage information provided by Google Trends data. We develop and utilize …

Virtual Training In Child Welfare, Penny Putnam Collins Mar 2023

Virtual Training In Child Welfare, Penny Putnam Collins

QIC-Takes

Child welfare offices and training centers had to transition their classroom instructor-led training to virtual platforms when the pandemic hit. Some training systems were already using virtual platforms or asynchronous learning tools to deliver training content, but no agency was 100% virtual pre-pandemic. The transition was sudden and there was a steep learning curve for some trainers. Changes made when the pandemic hit may now be the new normal. This QICTake highlights what our QIC-WD sites and team members experienced as child welfare agencies shifted to, and are now embracing, virtual training. What We’re Seeing Finding the Right Tools for …

Hedging Cryptos With Bitcoin Futures, Francis Liu, Natalie Packham, Meng-Jou Lu, Wolfgang Karl Haerdle Mar 2023

Hedging Cryptos With Bitcoin Futures, Francis Liu, Natalie Packham, Meng-Jou Lu, Wolfgang Karl Haerdle

Sim Kee Boon Institute for Financial Economics

The introduction of derivatives on Bitcoin enables investors to hedge risk exposures in cryptocurrencies. Because of volatility swings and jumps in cryptocurrency prices, the traditional variance-based approach to obtain hedge ratios may not be suitable for hedgers. In this work, we consider two extensions of the traditional approach: first, different dependence structures are modelled by different copulae, such as the Gaussian, Student-t, Normal Inverse Gaussian and Archimedean copulae; second, different risk measures, such as value-at-risk, expected shortfall and spectral risk measures are employed to find the optimal hedge ratio. Extensive out-of-sample tests using the data from the time …

Learning-By-Doing In Non-Homogeneous Tasks: An Empirical Study Of Content Creator Performance On A Music Streaming Platform, Yang Li, Yanni Ping, Yuyun Zhong, Ram Misra

Department of Information Management and Business Analytics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

With the development of high-speed internet and better mobile connections, online streaming platforms with user-generated videos are becoming popular. The success of these platforms relies on content creators who can effectively enhance user engagement (e.g., subscribing to a content creator’s channel). As opposed to homogeneous production scenarios (e.g., assembling automobiles in a factory), creating user-generated videos is a more complex task in which learning might happen. In this study, we empirically test the effect of prior experience on content creators’ performance. Furthermore, we examine the role of specialization in learning. We use a dataset from NetEase Cloud Music, one of …

Impact Of Emr/Ehr And Computer Decision Support Systems On Nursing Homes And Long-Term Care, Wendy Trzyna, Brian Cox, Alberto Coustasse

Management Faculty Research

Long-Term Care (LTCs) facilities and nursing homes have been an essential part of the healthcare industry to meet the needs of older adults. However, Electronic Medical Records (EMRs/ EHR within LTC facilities and nursing homes have lagged more than in other healthcare sectors. This research analyzed the impact of implementing EMR/EHR and Computerized Decision Support Systems within LTC facilities and nursing homes. In nursing homes and LTC facilities where EMR/EHR has been implemented, patient outcomes improved by reduced pressure ulcers and increased identification of patients at risk for malnutrition and falls. Integration of CDSSs with EMR/EHR improved documentation and prescribing …

Closed-System Transfer Devices Reduce Exposure To Contaminants, Ken Maxik, Craig Kimble, Alberto Coustasse Mar 2023

Closed-System Transfer Devices Reduce Exposure To Contaminants, Ken Maxik, Craig Kimble, Alberto Coustasse

Management Faculty Research

Closed-system transfer devices (CSTDs) are used during the preparation of hazardous drugs (HDs) as a mechanism to reduce the transfer of drugs or vapors into the environment. When evaluating these systems, pharmacists should consider which drugs in the pharmacy would benefit the safety of health care workers and patients using the systems. Medication types include neoplastic agents, such as bleomycin, cisplatin, and methotrexate, and other agents, such as cyclosporine, oxytocin, and progesterone.

Relationship Between The Hospital Readmission Reduction Program And Readmissions, Postoperative Complications, And Cost, Cary A. Blick, Blake P. Williams, Drake T. Myers, Joshua Pomranke, Sarah M. Clemente, Alberto Coustasse Mar 2023

Relationship Between The Hospital Readmission Reduction Program And Readmissions, Postoperative Complications, And Cost, Cary A. Blick, Blake P. Williams, Drake T. Myers, Joshua Pomranke, Sarah M. Clemente, Alberto Coustasse

Management Faculty Research

Hospital readmissions have contributed significantly to rising healthcare costs in the United States. To curb rising costs, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services introduced the Hospital Readmissions Reduction Program (HRRP), a penalty-based program designed to decrease healthcare costs. This research aims to determine if the HRRP has successfully reduced healthcare costs and increased quality outcomes associated with total knee arthroplasty (TKA) or total hip arthroplasty (THA) as defined by a reduction in readmission rates, postoperative complications, and overall costs. Although a positive correlation has been shown between outcomes and costs post-HRRP, more research is needed to tease out the …

Affirmative Action Initiatives In Education And Employment: Its Necessity Then, Now And In The Future, Bahaudin G. Mujtaba Mar 2023

Affirmative Action Initiatives In Education And Employment: Its Necessity Then, Now And In The Future, Bahaudin G. Mujtaba

HCBE Faculty Articles

Since its creation, affirmative action (AA) has been one of the most debated political issues in the United States and other nations such as South Africa. AA programs are, at times, seen as a tool of compensation for past discrimination toward women and particularly racial minorities. Many experts view it as an economic necessity since diverse employees can better forecast the needs of different communities. Nonetheless, some believe that AA is an obsolete and outdated practice that can lead to illegal discrimination based on race and gender. As such, it is useful to look at the rationale or purpose of …

Addressing Plastic Pollution Through Green Consumption: Predicting Intentions To Use Menstrual Cups In The Philippines, Alvin Patrick M. Valentin, Ma. Regina Hechanova-Alampay Mar 2023

Addressing Plastic Pollution Through Green Consumption: Predicting Intentions To Use Menstrual Cups In The Philippines, Alvin Patrick M. Valentin, Ma. Regina Hechanova-Alampay

Quantitative Methods and Information Technology Faculty Publications

Plastic pollution is a global environmental crisis that poses a huge threat to the health of people and marine ecosystems worldwide. A significant source of plastic pollution is menstrual hygiene management, and an approach that can help address this crisis is the usage of washable and reusable menstrual cups. Using an extended theory of planned behavior model that includes self-identity and perceived quality, the study predicted intentions to use menstrual cups in the Philippines. Structural equation modeling results showed that perceived quality predicted attitudes towards menstrual cup usage. Moreover, attitudes, perceived behavioral control, and self-identity predicted intentions to use menstrual …

The Drivers Of Successful Regional Expansion: Evidence From Multinational Corporations In Latin America During 1990–2005, Raju Parakkal, Joseph Johnson, Sherry Bartz-Marvez Mar 2023

The Drivers Of Successful Regional Expansion: Evidence From Multinational Corporations In Latin America During 1990–2005, Raju Parakkal, Joseph Johnson, Sherry Bartz-Marvez

College of Humanities and Sciences Faculty Papers

Multinational firms that enter regional country blocks, such as Latin America, often choose a beachhead country, i.e. an entry point, as a launchpad into other countries in the region. While some recent scholarship examines beachhead decisions, research that explicitly examines beach- head choice in a regional context and the subsequent speed of expansion and firm performance in the region is surprisingly absent in international business literature. To address this gap, we examine whether the beachhead choice affects the speed and performance of regional expan- sion of multinational firms. We also analyse whether a firm’s regional speed and performance are dependent …

Supply Chain Success Depends On Workers, Sarah Schiffling, Nikolaos Valantasis Kanellos Mar 2023

Supply Chain Success Depends On Workers, Sarah Schiffling, Nikolaos Valantasis Kanellos

Articles

2022 proved to be a difficult year for the people side of supply chains and the global transport networks that support them. Labour shortages and labour disputes put further pressure on systems that were already struggling with the fallout from the Covid-19 pandemic, the war in Ukraine, and the impact of climate change. Amid high levels of inflation, workers around the world have been striking for better pay and conditions, in areas as different as healthcare, waste management, and teaching. For example, 2022 saw port related strikes quadrupling in comparison to the previous year.

2023-March-01-Etsu Pharmacy Alumnus Demonstrates Critical Role Of Pharmacists After Medical Emergency, Bill Gatton College Of Pharmacy, East Tennessee State University, University Marketing And Communication, East Tennessee State University

ETSU News

When East Tennessee State University (ETSU) Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy alumnus Hayden Stanton (’22), PharmD, MBA, went to work at Food City Pharmacy in early December, it was just another day in the life of a community pharmacist: verifying prescriptions, giving vaccinations, and counseling patients to aid in taking medications effectively.

But what he didn’t expect was a medical emergency that would have him go beyond his usual community pharmacy role and put his medical training to the test.

Katie Callerhorn, a current medical student at ETSU Quillen College of Medicine, was experiencing what she thought was an allergic …
