Graduate, 2nd Place: Assessing The Knowledge, Attitude, And Everyday Life Practices Adopted Among Eastern Illinois University Students Towards Sustainability, Joel Holison
2023 Awards for Excellence in Student Research and Creative Activity - Documents
The concept of sustainable development gained attention and came into focus with the publication of the Brundtland Report (Brundtland, 1987). later the Education for Sustainability (EfS) initiative was presented in 1997 through the “Thessaloniki Declaration” as a carrier of the common and single message (Knapp, 2000). Sustainable development is the way a country pursues its economic development that does not jeopardize the opportunity for future generations to achieve their development (Brundtland, 1987). Deforestation, land destruction, soil degradation, air and water pollution, and other types of environmental deterioration are paid in the name of economic progress. This detriment may outweigh the …

Partial Centralization In A Durable-Good Supply Chain, Jin Li, Xiaodong Yang, Victor Shi, Gangshu (George) Cai
Information Systems and Analytics
There has been extensive research on the strategic choice between supply chain centralization and decentralization. However, most research assumes complete centralization or complete decentralization but omits the commonly adopted supply chain structure of partial centralization. With partial centralization, a firm owns a portion, but not all, of its partner. To help fill this research gap, in this paper, we make a major contribution by explicitly analyzing partial centralization in a supply chain where a durable-good manufacturer owns a portion of its downstream retailer. We start with a two-period model and derive analytical equilibrium outcomes of the supply chain and its …
Strong Versus Weak Consumer-Brand Relationships: Matching Psychological Sense Of Brand Community And Type Of Advertising Appeal, Brittney C. Bauer
Strong Versus Weak Consumer-Brand Relationships: Matching Psychological Sense Of Brand Community And Type Of Advertising Appeal, Brittney C. Bauer
School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Consumer‐brand relationships vary with regard to their degree of psychological connection to the brand. Some individuals may have a weak connection to the brand (e.g., general consumers), while others may possess a strong connection to the brand (e.g., brand community members). Marketers have yet to distinguish between the types of advertising appeals that are most effective for these different individuals. Hence, this research utilizes construal level theory to posit that consumers with a stronger [weaker] psychological sense of brand community will think about the brand more concretely [abstractly] and be more persuaded by utilitarian [symbolic] advertising appeals. Three original experiments …

Ben and Jerry’s is a world-leader in the premium ice cream market, having a very well-established brand known for high quality ice cream and unique flavors. Additionally, they are known for a large emphasis on economic and social equity, standing fast in their values and being very outspoken about their stances on prominent current events. After being acquired by Unilever, a global consumer goods company, Ben and Jerry’s came face to face with the reality that their company values will sometimes clash with their parent company’s after putting out a statement regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict that Unilever quickly denounced. Warby Parker is a rising competitor in the heavily consolidated eyewear industry. When it launched in 2008, the company took on a blue ocean strategy, which incorporates both cost leadership and product differentiation, in hopes of defeating powerful incumbents. Rather than selling its frames in existing eyewear retailers, many of which are owned by competitors, Warby Parker launched online, selling high-quality frames at an affordable price. More than a decade later, the company is reevaluating its strategy as it has yet to become profitable.

Dealing With “Humanewashing” Claims: Vital Farms’ Crucial Next Step, Bryce Janke, Cole Johnson, Kieran Mcwilliams, Justin Morrow, Isabelle Schmidt
B-Corp Case Studies by UNL Raikes Seniors
Vital Farms prides itself in their ethical and environmentally-friendly production of pasture-raised eggs, butter, and ghee. A popular tagline for the company is “keeping it bullsh*t-free.” This is core to their company mission and values. However, they are currently facing a PETA class action lawsuit for potential humanewashing and greenwashing, essentially false advertising. So, what happens when the Certified B-Corporation is under attack for the very thing that sets it apart from its competition? Is it possible to rebuild trust with the public and regain ethical standing after bad PR? What are humanewashing and greenwashing, and is Vital Farms guilty?
