On Domesticating Giants: Further Reflections On The Legal Approach To Transnational Enterprise, A. A. Fatouros

Articles by Maurer Faculty

This article continues a line of inquiry begun long ago at the University of Western Ontario, at a time when transnational enterprise was dealt with under the heading of "direct private foreign investment." It picks up and develops certain points made in some relatively recent articles of mine, such as, The Computer and the Mudhut: Notes on Multinational Enterprise in Developing Countries (1971), 10 Columbia J. Transn'l. L. 325; Multinational Enterprise and Extraterritoriality (1972), 1 J. Contemporary Business (No. 4); and especially, Problemes et ethodes d'une reglementation des enterprises multinationales (1974), 101 J. Droit Int'l (Clunet) 495.

Using The Blankenship Algorithm To Find The General Solution Of A Linear Diophantine Equation, Susumu Morito, Harvey M. Salkin Jan 1977

Using The Blankenship Algorithm To Find The General Solution Of A Linear Diophantine Equation, Susumu Morito, Harvey M. Salkin

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

This paper shows that the Blankenship algorithm, originally proposed to find the greatest common divisor of several integers and a solution of the associated linear diophantine equation, can be used to find the general solution of the equation. This yields a more efficient method to find the general solution than the one proposed by Bond. The modification of Blankenship's algorithm to avoid generating vectors with huge component values is also proposed.

Young Scientists Characteristics And The Peer Review Process, Burton V. Dean Jan 1977

Young Scientists Characteristics And The Peer Review Process, Burton V. Dean

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

This study investigates challenges faced by young scientists in academia, focusing on creativity loss in U.S. scientific endeavors and the National Science Foundation's (NSF) peer review process. Objectives include mapping education and career trajectories of Ph.D. scientists, analyzing age distribution, and examining factors influencing the supply, demand, and mobility of scientists. Key findings reveal a projected surplus of doctoral scientists, aging faculty demographics limiting innovation, and NSF-funded principal investigators being older and more senior than average. The peer review process is seen as unfavorable to innovative proposals from young scientists, with institutional and individual barriers reducing their NSF submissions. Recommendations …

On Designing And Implementing A Dental Practice Management Game, Susumu Morito, Arnold Reisman, Hamilton Emmons, Juan Rivaud

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

This paper describes the structure of an interactive dental practice management game, with special emphasis on its design and computer implementation. The game covers a wide spectrum of management decisions in setting up and in running a dental practice. The decisions considered include practice location, the form of practice, staffing mix and salaries, and the purchasing or leasing of equipment. The game also covers major daily, monthly, and yearly decisions, including forecasting patient load, economic analysis, and scheduling of patients, workers, and operatories. As three levels of decisions (daily, monthly, yearly) are considered, the game has a multi-level structure. The …

Methodology For Selection Of Industrial Plants For Rural Communities, Dan Yaron, A. Cooper, E. Fogel, Arnold Reisman Jan 1977

Methodology For Selection Of Industrial Plants For Rural Communities, Dan Yaron, A. Cooper, E. Fogel, Arnold Reisman

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

The paper presents a methodology designed for the selection of industrial plants for rural communities. The problem is formulated within the framework of systems analysis with the numerous systems elements and the links between them properly identified and pointed out. The paper discusses the overall methodology as a whole, however, special emphasis is laid upon the evaluation of the socio-economic preferences with respect to industrial plants. The Israeli kibbutz communal settlements provided the empirical background for the study and field testing of the methodology. At the same time, the methodology, with proper modifications, can be adopted to any rural community …

Polluters’ Profits And Political Response: Direct Control Versus Taxes: Comment, Robert S. Main, Charles W. Baird

Scholarship and Professional Work - Business

In a recent issue of this Review, James Buchanan and Gordon Tullock (B-T) presented a public choice analysis of the relative merits of direct controls and taxes in externality control. In Section IV of their paper, B-T consider the case of reciprocal external diseconomies of consumption. They ask whether "... persons in this sort of interaction, acting through the political processes of the community, will impose on themselves either a penalty tax or direct regulation" (p. 143). Their analysis is carried out within the context of a two-person model in which each person consumes the same quantity of a …

Communication Skills Needed By Persons In Business Organizations, Vincent Disalvo, David C. Larsen, William J. Seiler Nov 1976

Communication Skills Needed By Persons In Business Organizations, Vincent Disalvo, David C. Larsen, William J. Seiler

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

Whether we like it or not, this is the age of subject matter relevancy and educational accountability. In order for instruction to be interesting, meaningful, and practical for students, it must be essentially a microcosm of that segment of the “real world” students will be entering upon graduation. The objective of competency- or performance-based models of education suggests that educators should be held accountable for what they teach. However, before teachers can be held accountable they need to know what skills and abilities their students will require in order to be successful in their career objectives.

In addition to the …

A Two-Stage Approach For Geographic Effects In Cama Systems, Teunis J. Ott Nov 1976

A Two-Stage Approach For Geographic Effects In Cama Systems, Teunis J. Ott

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

A methodology is developed for the second stage of a Computer-Assisted Mass Appraisal System, which corrects the estimated assessed values of properties for their location. Recent sales close to the parcel in question are given heavier weight than other sales. The methodology is based on constructing a response surface, where the optimal response surface minimizes a weighted average of the sum of squared residuals and a quantity that represents the smoothness of the response surface. An algorithm, for which convergence has been proven, is provided for finding the optimal response surface.
