Economics Of The Pacific Whiting, Merluccius Productus, Fishery, Eric Anderson Jan 1985

Economics Of The Pacific Whiting, Merluccius Productus, Fishery, Eric Anderson

Economics Faculty Publications

(First paragraph) Interest in the economics of Pacific whiting, Merluccius productus, production and consumption has been simulated in recent years by expanding U.S. participation in the fishery formerly dominated by foreign fishing and processing. This has raised several questions within the U.S. fishing industry: 1) Will it be profitable for additional U.S. fisherman and processors to enter the fishery? 2) What configuration will the U.S. Pacific whiting industry take? and 3) What will be the nature of markets for Pacific whiting products? This paper summarizes the conclusions of several reports and studies which bear on these questions.

Integrating Zero-Base Budgeting With Management-By-Objectives: An Empirical Inquiry, John Joseph Williams, James D. Newton, Eric A. Morgan Jan 1985

Integrating Zero-Base Budgeting With Management-By-Objectives: An Empirical Inquiry, John Joseph Williams, James D. Newton, Eric A. Morgan

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

Popular arguments in the management literature advocate the implementation congruity and complementarity of zero-base budgeting (ZBB) with an established management-by-objectives (MBO) system. The present study examined management perceptions on 28 ZBB implementation variables for MBO users and non-MBO users which were gathered from 153 managers at two hierarchical levels within a single private sector organization. Results from both univariate and multivariate tests indicate that ZBB implementation was not facilitated by the existence of an MBO system for either lower level management or for upper level management. The evidence obtained here strongly suggests that the purported conventional rationale underlying ZBB coupling …

This report presents the results of a survey of tourists vacationing in Slorida who did not visit Silver Springs. This group will be labeled as "non-visitors" in the report. The survey was designed and administered by the Dick Pope, Sr. Institute for Tourism Studies, for Silver Springs management. The "non-visitor" survey was designed to provide a database for Silver Springs management use in planning marketing and advertising programs. The primary objective was to explore non visitors' attitudes and preferences towards Florida's tourist attractions, including Silver Springs. In addition, the survey will develop demographic profiles of non visitors and explore their …

A Stochastic Dominance Algorithm Using Piecewise Linear Approximations, Peter H. Ritchken, Yogesh Kumar Agarwal, Alok K. Gupta Dec 1984

A Stochastic Dominance Algorithm Using Piecewise Linear Approximations, Peter H. Ritchken, Yogesh Kumar Agarwal, Alok K. Gupta

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

Current stochastic dominance algorithms use step functions to approximate the cumulative distributions of the alternatives even when the underlying random variables are known to be continuous. Since stochastic dominance tests require repeated integration of the cumulative distribution functions, a compounding of errors may result from this approximation. This article introduces a new stochastic dominance algorithm that approximates the cumulative distribution function by piecewise linear approximations. Comparisons between the new and old algorithms are performed for normally distributed alternatives.

Warranty Design Under Buyer And Seller Risk Aversion, Peter H. Ritchken, Charles S. Tapiero Dec 1984

Warranty Design Under Buyer And Seller Risk Aversion, Peter H. Ritchken, Charles S. Tapiero

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

This paper provides a framework in which warranty policies for non-repairable items can be evaluated according to risk preferences of both buyers and sellers. In particular, a warranty price schedule is established such that sellers are indifferent among the policies. Given this schedule, a buyer's response is expressed by selecting the price-warranty combination that minimizes disutility. Within this framework, a warranty can be viewed as an instrument of risk management that can induce more sales and greater profitability. For given utility functions, analytical results for the development of a price schedule are developed. Numerical results illustrate the substitution effects between …

The Servicing Capacity/Quality Control Problem, Jagadeesh Chandramohan, Peter H. Ritchken, Charles S. Tapiero Nov 1984

The Servicing Capacity/Quality Control Problem, Jagadeesh Chandramohan, Peter H. Ritchken, Charles S. Tapiero

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

Product reliability decisions, quality control policies, and warranty and servicing contracts impact costs and profits. The purpose of this article is to simultaneously determine reliability levels, quality control, and post-sales repairing/ servicing capacities, so as to maximize profitability. Based on long-run average profits, and using a renewal theory approach, a framework is developed, whereby the substitution effects of the decision variables can be explored. Specific examples of the procedure are investigated. These include a simple attribute quality control scheme with random production lot sizes and a curtailed sampling scheme with fixed production lots.

Displan: A Multiproduct Plant/Warehouse Location Model With Nonlinear Inventory Costs, Ronald H. Ballou Nov 1984

Displan: A Multiproduct Plant/Warehouse Location Model With Nonlinear Inventory Costs, Ronald H. Ballou

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

DISPLAN is a large-scale computer model used for the strategic planning of physical supply and distribution networks. This planning may involve determining the number, size, and location of plants, warehouses, inventories, terminals, and similar facilities. Although several mathematical models address this problem, a unique feature of DISPLAN is its handling of nonlinear inventory costs. The proper economic analysis of network designs requires balancing all relevant costs to achieve the minimum cost configuration of facilities. These costs include facility inbound and outbound transportation costs, facility fixed costs, warehouse storage and handling costs, order processing costs, and inventory carrying costs. Accurately describing …

Speech At Seattle Pacific University Chapel, C. William Pollard

C. William Pollard Papers

Speaking at a Seattle Pacific University chapel service, Pollard asks students how discipleship and work (or God and profit) can co-exist. For Pollard, profit is a means to an end, namely that of investing our lives in people made in the image of God.
