Price Determination In A Competitive Industry With Costly Information And A Production Lag, Reuven Glick, Clas Wihlborg Jan 1985

Price Determination In A Competitive Industry With Costly Information And A Production Lag, Reuven Glick, Clas Wihlborg

Business Faculty Articles and Research

We analyze the role of information for price and output adjustment when competitive firms with rational expectations cannot directly distinguish between industrywide and firm-specific cost disturbances. Firms may become informed about industrywide cost conditions by acquiring information at a cost. The sensitivity of price and output to cost disturbances decreases as more firms choose to purchase information. The equilibrium industry share of informed firms increases as the cost of information falls and total cost variability increases. The equilibrium share of informed firms is largest when there is a comparable degree of variability in both industrywide and firm-specific costs.

Recreational Redevelopment For The Knoxville World's Fair Site, Harrison Price Company

Harrison "Buzz" Price Papers

The following report prepared by the Harrison Price Company presents the findings and conclusions of a consulting program undertaken to aid the City of Knoxville in determining how best to deal with the problems and opportunities of redeveloping the Knoxville World's Fair site for the benefit of the community at large. It is not intended to be a definitive statement for the disposition of the property. The report is organized into six sections, including the introduction. The discussion begins with a section that suggests a method of approach towards the redevelopment process that other cities have found useful, and that …

Research Notes Organizational Commitment: A Comparison Of American, Japanese, And Korean Employees, Fred Luthans, Harriette S. Mccaul, Nancy G. Dodd Jan 1985

Research Notes Organizational Commitment: A Comparison Of American, Japanese, And Korean Employees, Fred Luthans, Harriette S. Mccaul, Nancy G. Dodd

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

Considerable attention is currently being given to exploring differences between Japanese and American workers that might explain the widening gap between the productivity growth rates of the two countries. Some researchers have suggested that this difference in productivity growth is, at least in part, due to Japanese workers' having a higher level of commitment to their orgnaizations than American works (Cole, 1979; Hatvany & Pucik, 1981; Marsh & Mannari, 1977; Whitehall & Takezawa, 1968). Turnover rates are commonly cited to support the popular notion that Japanese employees, whose turnover rate is about half that of their American counterparts, are more …

Some Generalizations And Applications Of Thinning Of Point Processes-Covariance Analysis, Lung-Kuang Liang Jan 1985

Some Generalizations And Applications Of Thinning Of Point Processes-Covariance Analysis, Lung-Kuang Liang

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

This dissertation addresses the areas of thinning and superposition of point and marked point processes. Specifically, we examine the dependencies between the thinned processes obtained when an original point process is thinned to produce two or more point processes. These dependencies have been examined at the level of cross-covariances under certain assumptions about the original point process as well as the thinning rule. In particular, the following independent thinning of point processes models are studied: 1) Bernoulli thinning of delayed renewal processes, exponential moving-average processes of order 1 and doubly stochastic; 2) Poisson processes; 3) Multinomial thinning of point processes; …

Optimal Inventory And Replacement Policy With Production Dependent Equipment Deterioration, Chin-Chih Ho Jan 1985

Optimal Inventory And Replacement Policy With Production Dependent Equipment Deterioration, Chin-Chih Ho

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

A periodic review, stochastic demand, dynamic, combined production inventory and equipment replacement problem is considered. The production system is subject to deterioration and random failure with probability dependent on initial state and quantity produced in a period. The problem is formulated as a discounted Markov decision process with two-dimensional state and action spaces. Assumptions are presented which are sufficient to prove that a simply structured production and replacement policy is optimal in any finite or infinite horizon case. The objective is to minimize the total expected discounted cost. In the finite horizon case, two different types of models, namely, the …

On Option Pricing Bounds, Peter H. Ritchken Jan 1985

On Option Pricing Bounds, Peter H. Ritchken

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

The purpose of this article is to compare the Perrakis and Ryan bounds of option prices in a single period model with option bounds derived using linear programming. It is shown that the upper bounds are identical but that the lower bounds are different. A comparison of these bounds, together with Merton's bounds and the Black-Scholes prices in a lognormal securities market, is presented.

The Hidden Challenges Of Retail Expansion, Larry N. Bitner, Judith D. Powell Jan 1985

The Hidden Challenges Of Retail Expansion, Larry N. Bitner, Judith D. Powell

Robins School of Business White Paper Series, 1980-2022

Successful small retailers invariably are tempted to test the adage "more is better." While the expansion allure is more than many can resist, it must be tempered by the realization that many hidden challenges await the unsuspecting entrepreneur.

Success of the new organization will required not only ore but a different kind of effort than used in managing the single store. First, successful operation will now depend on delegating operating decision to professional managers. The autonomy given these managers in a complex decision and may be placed anywhere within a three dimensional continuum depending on the desired image, supervision, and …

Modeling Institutional Production Of Higher Education, Robert C. Dolan, Robert M. Schmidt Jan 1985

Modeling Institutional Production Of Higher Education, Robert C. Dolan, Robert M. Schmidt

Robins School of Business White Paper Series, 1980-2022

This paper follows an earlier article in which we examined the production process of higher education. Two aspects of the original study serve as the basis for this paper and thus warrant brief review.

First, we have argued that educational production does not lend it self to analysis as a production function in the classic sense. A simple production rendering ignores the fact that two of the more important factors, students and faculty, enter the process upon considerable self-selection, especially among the more highly qualified of these inputs. This reasoning led us to model educational production as a three-equation simultaneous …

Rationalism, Capitalism, And Democracy: The Views Of Schumpeter And Knight, J. Patrick Raines, Clarence R. Jung Jr. Jan 1985

Rationalism, Capitalism, And Democracy: The Views Of Schumpeter And Knight, J. Patrick Raines, Clarence R. Jung Jr.

Robins School of Business White Paper Series, 1980-2022

The concept of rationality is both the origination point and the Achilles’ heel of the study of economic theory. Two of America’s more important economists, J. A. Schumpeter and Frank H. Knight, held highly developed views of the rationalistic civilization and rational thought. Although considerable concordance is present in their visions of rationality, conceptual differences exist.

Rational behavior is, in many respects, like beauty in that its meaning is defined by the extent to which there is a mapping with the values of the observer. Any discussion of rationality must begin with this difficult problem of relativity in values.
