Bridging The Chasm Between Intentions And Behaviors: Developing And Testing A Construal Level Theory Of Internalwhistle-Blowing, Abhijeet K. Vadera, Ann E. Tenbrunsel, Kristina A. Diekmann

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The recent wave of corporate scandals has necessitated a more systematic investigation of internal whistle-blowing as a potential way to prevent wrongdoing. Our understanding of whistle-blowing, however, has been hampered by a deep chasm that exists between employees’ intent to blow the whistle and their whistle-blowing behaviors. We argue that to fully bridge this gap, we need to consider employees’ cognitive states at the time of whistle-blowing intentions versus behaviors and to link these cognitive states to the ethical systems within the organization’s ethical infrastructure to understand which systems are more effective in cultivating whistle-blowing intentions and which systems help …

Comparing And Assessing Four Ai Chatbots' Competence In Economics, Patrik T. Hultberg, David Santandreu Calonge, Firuz Kamalov, Linda Smail

All Works

Artificial Intelligence (AI) chatbots have emerged as powerful tools in modern academic endeavors, presenting both opportunities and challenges in the learning landscape. They can provide content information and analysis across most academic disciplines, but significant differences exist in terms of response accuracy for conclusions and explanations, as well as word counts. This study explores four distinct AI chatbots, GPT-3.5, GPT-4, Bard, and LLaMA 2, for accuracy of conclusions and quality of explanations in the context of university-level economics. Leveraging Bloom’s taxonomy of cognitive learning complexity as a guiding framework, the study confronts the four AI chatbots with a standard test …

The Effect Of Intangible Assets On Corporate Financial Performance: The Evidence From Serbia, Vladimir Dženopoljac, Amer Rastić, Aleksandra Dženopoljac

All Works

The paper examines how intangible assets, measured as the Value Added Intellectual Coefficient (VAIC), impact the margin and return ratios of the most profitable companies in Serbia. Previous research has demonstrated that intangible assets have a positive effect on the company’s profitability across various contexts, including the European Union, the United Kingdom, and Serbia as well. This research study aims to determine whether intangible assets have a positive effect on the four ratios, namely the Net Profit Margin (NPM), the Earnings Before Interests, Taxes, Depreciation, and Amortization margin (EBITDAm), Return on Assets (ROA), and Return on Equity (ROE) or not. …

A Micro-Perspective Analysis Of The Demand For Greek And Non-Greek Yogurt In The United States Over Calendar Years 2018 To 2020, Oral Capps, Riuxin Jia, Vikas Mishra, Macson O. Ogieriakhi

Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness Faculty Publications and Presentations

Using the Heckman framework, we develop profiles of households who purchase Greek yogurt and non-Greek yogurt and estimate own-price, cross-price, and income elasticities of demand. Attention is centered on the impacts of age, race, education, and ethnicity of the household head, household income, household size, region, the presence of children, and prices of Greek yogurt and non-Greek yogurt. This analysis rests on data acquired from Nielsen pertaining to 164,484 households over calendar years 2018–2020. Own-price elasticities are estimated to be −1.36 for Greek yogurt and −0.70 for non-Greek yogurt. Additionally, these yogurt products are not only substitutes but also necessities.

Untangling Influence: The Effect Of Follower-Followee Comparison On Social Media Engagement, Yi Peng, Liling Lu May 2024

Untangling Influence: The Effect Of Follower-Followee Comparison On Social Media Engagement, Yi Peng, Liling Lu

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Social media platforms and marketers are keen on identifying truly influential creators. Number of followers (i.e., those who follow creators) and number of followees (i.e., those who are followed by creators) serve as cues to infer creators' influence. However, a cue of creators' actual influence is under-addressed and its effect on social media engagement remains to be explored. This research fills the gap in the literature by investigating how the cue of creators' actual influence (i.e., follower-followee comparison) may affect followers' engagement behavior. The study further examines the moderation effects of media-, topic-, and creator-related factors. The present work leverages …

A Tale Of Two Signals: Partner Csr Versus Csi And Alliance Formation, Qiwen Yu, Ilya R. P. Cuypers, Heli Wang May 2024

A Tale Of Two Signals: Partner Csr Versus Csi And Alliance Formation, Qiwen Yu, Ilya R. P. Cuypers, Heli Wang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This study outlines two signaling mechanisms—trust and spillover—through which a potential partner’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) and corporate social irresponsibility (CSI) affect alliance formation. Extending a key insight in signaling theory that positive and negative signals are conceptually distinct, we propose that which mechanism is dominant in explaining alliance formation varies between CSR and CSI. Specifically, we argue that the dominant signaling mechanism for CSR is the trust mechanism, through which CSR signals the moral character of a potential partner, which is used by the focal firm to infer the partner’s trustworthiness. In contrast, CSI negatively affects alliance formation primarily …

Design Of Off-Grid Lighting Business Models To Serve The Poor: Field Experiments And Structural Analysis, Bhavani Shanker Uppari, Serguei Netessine, Ioana Popescu, Rowan P. Clarke

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

A significant proportion of the world’s population has no access to grid-based electricity and so relies on off-grid lighting solutions. Rechargeable lamp technology is gaining popularity as an alternative off-grid lighting model in developing countries. In this paper, we explore consumer behavior and the operational inefficiencies that result under this model. Specifically, we are interested in (i) measuring the impact of inconvenience (of travelling to recharge the lamp) along with the impact of liquidity constraints (due to poverty) on lamp usage, and (ii) evaluating the efficacy of strategies that address these factors. We build a structural model of consumers’ recharge …

Classifying Forecasts, Michael S. Drake, James R. Moon Jr., James D. Warren May 2024

Classifying Forecasts, Michael S. Drake, James R. Moon Jr., James D. Warren

Faculty Publications

We employ a novel machine learning technique to classify analysts’ forecast revisions into five types based on how the revision weighs publicly available signals. We label these forecast types as quant, sundry, contrarian, herder, and independent forecasts. Our tests reveal that a greater diversity of forecast types within the consensus is associated with increased consensus dispersion and improved consensus accuracy. Additionally, consensus diversity is associated with an improved information environment for firms, as reflected in reduced earnings announcement information asymmetry and volatility, higher earnings response coefficients, and faster price formation. Our study sheds light on how analysts revise their forecasts …

Quantum Machine Learning For Credit Scoring, Nikolaos Schetakis, Davit Aghamalyan, Micheael Boguslavsky, Agnieszka Rees, Marc Rakotomalala, Paul Robert Griffin

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This study investigates the integration of quantum circuits with classical neural networks for enhancing credit scoring for small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). We introduce a hybrid quantum–classical model, focusing on the synergy between quantum and classical rather than comparing the performance of separate quantum and classical models. Our model incorporates a quantum layer into a traditional neural network, achieving notable reductions in training time. We apply this innovative framework to a binary classification task with a proprietary real-world classical credit default dataset for SMEs in Singapore. The results indicate that our hybrid model achieves efficient training, requiring significantly fewer epochs …

Mandatory Credit Allocation And Government Guarantee In The Philippines, Luis F. Dumlao Apr 2024

Mandatory Credit Allocation And Government Guarantee In The Philippines, Luis F. Dumlao

Economics Department Faculty Publications

Mandatory credit allocation is a policy intervention to pressure banks to lend to certain sectors that otherwise unfettered finance would not give access to. While some would argue that mandatory credit allocation results in sub-optimal allocation of resources, it has been shown that such intervention results is socially desirable outcome. However, mandatory credit allocation should not be the responsibility of banks only, it must be supported with government guarantees. In the Philippines, there are three sectors in which mandatory credit allocation is given namely the agriculture sector, the micro, small and medium enterprises or MSME sector, and enterprises involved in …

These scams include rigged casinos, charity fraud, business email compromise, and embezzlement within smaller businesses.

We chose this topic in an attempt to bring more attention to the criminal side of the business world that people otherwise see as harmless. Especially with the recent …
