Locking In Overseas Buyers Amid Geopolitical Conflicts, Di Fan, Pengcheng Ma, Lin Cui, Daphne W. Yiu
Locking In Overseas Buyers Amid Geopolitical Conflicts, Di Fan, Pengcheng Ma, Lin Cui, Daphne W. Yiu
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Geopolitical conflicts, particularly economic ones, introduce significant uncertainties into the global supply chain. The impact of these conflicts on cross-border buyer-supplier transactions remains underexplored, as does the capability of global suppliers to mitigate such risks by locking in their foreign buyers. Employing a combined perspective of resource dependence theory and transaction cost economics, we examine a natural experiment to investigate the effects of the 2018 U.S.-China trade war on the transactional relationships between Chinese suppliers and their U.S. buyers. Our study reveals that the trade war generally adversely affected these buyer-supplier transactional relationships, leading to a negative abnormal transaction value …

Reeling In The Slack: An Integrative Review To Reinstate Slack As A Central Theoretical Construct For Management Research, Matthew P. Mount, Gokhan Ertug, Korcan Kavusan, Gerard George, Tengjian Zou
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Slack is a prominent construct in management research, shown to be relevant for a wide range of phenomena. Yet, despite slack’s prominence and breadth of application, our review reveals a lack of clarity and consistency in the categorization, theorizing, and measurement of various types and forms of slack. This has led to differences in the characterization and treatment of seemingly identical kinds of slack, which prevents the full exploitation of the conceptual depth of the slack construct and thus the creation of robust knowledge about slack resources. Based on a review of 229 studies which explicitly theorized about slack, we …

Accounting For The Eu Green Taxonomy: Exploring Its Concept, Data And Analytics, Lucia Alessi, Theodor Florian Cojoianu, Andreas G. F. Hoepner, Giovanna Michelon
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
The European Union's Green Taxonomy has been used by corporations to account for and disclose hundreds of billions of Euros in capital expenditures. The aim of the taxonomy is to set a common and clear definition about which economic activities are most needed for the transition to a low-carbon economy, in line with the objectives of the European Green Deal. It is essential that academic research explores (a) to what extent the taxonomy is clearly understood, (b) if it impacts financial, environmental and societal outcomes, and (c) how it can be advanced. We review the nascent literature on this new …

Contractual Remedies In Mergers: Lessons From Crispo V. Musk, Dhruv Aggarwal, Albert H. Choi, Geeyoung Min
Law & Economics Working Papers
The Delaware Chancery Court recently restricted a merger target's ability to recover damages on behalf of its shareholders from a breaching buyer. This paper investigates the impact of the decision. First, we present a theoretical analysis to generate empirical predictions. Second, we show that the decision led to a decrease in the firm value of targets in mergers governed by Delaware law. Third, we hand-collect relevant provisions from merger agreements and find that the agreements governed by Delaware law increasingly include target-friendly non-price terms after the decision. We also present evidence suggesting deal price responds to the inclusion of novel …

The Behavioral Contagion Effect Of Tourists’ Risk Decision-Making, Jiangchi Zhang, Chaowu Xie, Feifei Lai, Songshan Huang
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
This study investigated the contagion effect of other tourists' risk-seeking behavior on tourists' risk decision-making. It further examined the mediation of two contrasting motivational systems (approach-avoidance), and the moderation of destination management deterrence. Four experiments were conducted focusing on the risk decision-making of tourists in the context of undeveloped natural areas and tidal-bore watching settings. Independent samples t-tests, regression, and multivariate analysis of covariance were utilized to examine the proposed conceptual model. The results of Experiment 1 (n = 226) demonstrated that seeing other tourists' risk-seeking behavior had a contagion effect on tourists' risk decisions; specifically, other tourists' risk-seeking behavior …

Impact Of Psychic Distance Stimuli On International Tourist Flows: A Cross-Country Analysis, Yuhong Shao, Songshan (Sam) Huang, Tingting Huo, Rui Huang, Zhiyong Li
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Research on psychic distance in tourism studies has mainly focused on perceived psychic distance, while little attention has been paid to psychic distance stimuli. Applying the Cultural-Administrative-Geographic-Economic (CAGE) distance framework, this study employs a gravity model framework to investigate the relationship between psychic distance stimuli and international tourist flows and the moderating role of Internet popularity in such a relationship based on information asymmetry theory. Further, this study investigates the effects of psychic distance stimuli along the cultural, administrative, geographic, and economic dimensions. The empirical analysis is based on a panel dataset of bilateral tourist flows between 56 countries from …

The Impact Of Servqual On Consumers’ Satisfaction, Loyalty, And Intention To Use Online Food Delivery Services, Denni Arli, Patrick Van Esch, Scott Weaven
Marketing and Hospitality, Resort and Tourism Management
Over the past five years, customer visits to restaurants have stag- nated, while online deliveries have grown significantly. Many restaurants have adapted by adopting third-party food delivery services. However, online food delivery services (OFDSs) are underrepresented in the current retail literature. This study aims to address this gap by assessing the impact of service quality on consumers’ satisfaction, loyalty, and intention to use food delivery services. Specifically, we investigated whether customers were more loyal to restaurants or online food delivery services (OFDSs). We recruited 475 respondents who had used online food delivery services. This study analyzed the data using partial …

Joint Advertising: The Impact Of Domestic, Foreign, And Global Partners On Cognitive Fit, Brittney C. Bauer, Clark D. Johnson
School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Purpose – Joint advertising is an emerging strategy where marketers promote both brands in the same marketing communication. This research determines how the domestic, foreign, or global nature of the partner impacts important brand-related outcomes and identifies underlying psychological process mechanisms and contextual variables that affect this relationship.
Design/methodology/approach – Across three experiments, we investigate how the type of joint advertising partner impacts consumer attitudes and behaviors. We establish the number of similarities between the partners and perceived cognitive fit as the mediating process mechanisms underlying this relationship, with holistic processing moderating the effect.
Findings – We find that when …

Influencers: The Power Of Comments, Cristina Nistor, Matthew Selove
Business Faculty Articles and Research
Many customers choose products based on information from social media influencers. Companies can pay these influencers to promote their products. We develop a model in which customers read an influencer’s sponsored post for a mix of entertainment and product information, and those who purchase the product can leave comments for future customers. We derive conditions in which a large celebrity influencer endorses all products, whereas a microinfluencer adopts a policy of endorsing only high-quality products. In equilibrium, the microinfluencer screens for high-quality products so his followers do not waste time reading informative comments about low-quality products. By contrast, the celebrity …

Kicking The Robots: The Roles Of Transformational Leadership And Fear On Service Robot Risk Awareness And Robot Abuse Relationship, Cass Shum, Hyounae (Kelly) Min, Jie Sun, Heyao (Chandler) Yu, Zhaoli He
Hospitality Faculty Research
Purpose: Service robots are increasingly prevalent in the hospitality industry. While studies have explored the concept of service robot risk awareness (SRRA)– an employee’s perception of service robots posing a threat to human labor– the impact of SRRA on robot abuse and its emotional mechanism through which it affects employees remains unclear. This research leverages emotional appraisal theory to investigate the mediating role of fear of robots in the relationship between SRRA and robot abuse. Additionally, considering the influential role of leadership in shaping emotional appraisal, this study examines the moderating impact of transformational leadership.
Design/Methodology/Approach: To test the proposed …

A Workplace Security Framework: Mitigating Employee-Related Threats, Alan Saquella
Publications
In the modern discussion on workplace security, the focus often centers around preventing active shootings and violence stemming from terminated or disgruntled employees. The article “Publicly Humiliating Events: A Precursor to Workplace Violence” by Karie Gibson, Lauren Brubaker and Andre Simons rightly highlights the crucial role that public humiliation plays in triggering such violent acts. However, beyond the immediate threat of homicide, there exists a broader spectrum of potential risks posed by former employees, including acts of sabotage, espionage, vandalism and cyberattacks, all of which demand attention and proactive measures from security professionals.

Background Non-adherence to anti-hypertensive medications is prevalent, leading to increased hospital costs and preventable deaths and disabilities. Managing patient perceptions of adherence difficulties may be key to improving adherence. Objective This study examined the potential negative effect of patients’ perceived difficulties with anti-hypertensive medication taking on adherence, along with whether and how that effect could be reduced through patient knowledge of and commitment to adherence. Method 10,867 adult U.S. residents diagnosed with essential hypertension and prescribed anti-hypertensive medications participated in a cross-sectional online survey using self-reported behaviors and perceptions. Stepwise regressions and mean difference analyses were performed. Results Perceived adherence …

Revenue Cycle Management, Mary Scalf
Revenue Cycle Management, Mary Scalf
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The healthcare industry continues to navigate through legislative changes requiring a change from the fee-for-service model to a value-based model. Healthcare is required to balance quality care of the patient and financial viability. The general problem to be addressed is the inefficient adoption of a revenue integrity program within the revenue cycle management process resulting in a revenue deficit for healthcare providers. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to add to the body of knowledge exploring the possible inefficient insurance denial management process within non-profit hospital-owned physician practices resulting in revenue deficits for the provider clinics. The study …

The Perpetual Challenges Of Nonprofit Board Governance And Its' Impact On Operations, Gala U. Harvell
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Nonprofit organizations (NPOs) exist to provide societal benefits to the community and improve the quality of life. The chief executive officers (CEO) or executive directors (ED) are the executive leaders who ensure the organization follows the strategic direction the board of directors developed. The directors have a fiduciary responsibility to the organization and stakeholders to provide financial oversight, strategic management, and guidance on policies and procedures. Ensuring effective board governance occurs requires members to understand their roles and responsibilities as directors. This qualitative constructivism study included determining the effects of board governance on operations. The participants comprised two groups: (1) …

The Nexus Of Passive-Avoidant Leadership And Deviancy: Exploring Job Embeddedness, Anthony Maurice Da Silva
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
In the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, employers have experienced unprecedented changes in the workforce, including labor shortages and new legislation. As a result, many organizations, known as second-chance employers, proactively seek alternative talent sources to mitigate staffing shortages, including hiring candidates with criminal backgrounds, either voluntarily or as mandated by law. However, this approach has challenges; individuals with criminal records often lack essential support upon reentry and experience an increased risk of reoffending. Although existing literature indicates that the appropriate leadership style is crucial for behavior correction, there is a gap in the literature addressing employees who work for …

Sexual Harassment In Utah: A 2024 Update, Maria Blevins, Ariell Hardy, Susan R. Madsen
Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications
The term sexual harassment was introduced in April 1975 by Lin Farley; the phrase was revolutionary because in two words it gave a name to the experience women had been facing in the workplace when they endured the unwanted sexual advances of male coworkers.1 The term helped usher in a new era in which women could resist such behaviors.2 Sexual harassment has been illegal in the US for decades,3 and although there has been increased attention to the problem since 1970, including moments surrounding the Anita Hill hearing in 1991 and the #MeToo movement of 2017,4 …
