The Implications Of Corporate Political Activism And Governance, Marcos Velazquez
The Implications Of Corporate Political Activism And Governance, Marcos Velazquez
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation is comprised of three essays that study corporate political activism through the lens of corporate governance. The first essay examines how CEO overconfidence, moderated by CEO power, drives lobbying expenditures. The findings suggest that neither variable by itself affects lobbying outlays. However, it is the interaction between such characteristics that increases lobbying activity. Executives exhibiting above-average overconfidence who also chair the board tend to spend 36% more in lobbying. Ensuing firm performance is examined to establish whether the surge is in line with stewardship or agency conflict paradigms. There is limited evidence of improved valuations due to lobbying …

When Sarah Meets Lawrence: The Effects Of Coeducation On Women's College Major Choices, Avery Calkins, Ariel J. Binder, Dana Shaat, Brenden Timpe
Department of Economics: Faculty Publications
We leverage variation in the adoption of coeducation by U.S. women's colleges to study how exposure to a mixed-gender collegiate environment affects women's human capital investments. Our event-study analyses of newly collected historical data find a 3.0-3.5 percentage-point (30-33%) decline in the share of women majoring in STEM. While coeducation caused a large influx of male peers and modest increase in male faculty, we find no evidence that it altered the composition of the female student body or other gender-neutral inputs. Extrapolation of our main estimate suggests that coeducational environments explain 36% of the current gender gap in STEM.

Exploring The Effects Of Persuasive Designs Of Intelligent Advice-Giving Systems On Users’ Trust Perceptions, Advice Acceptance, And Reuse Intentions, Tian Yu
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
With artificial intelligence (AI) penetrating into a broad range of industries in the current age, it has an impact on our daily living in a more and more profound way. Interacting with AI-based systems for advice has become a common practice as well. As advice-giving systems (AGS) become more cognitive and human-like, they can influence users’ decision-making to a new level. Therefore, it becomes increasingly important to explore this new type of intelligent system and examine how users perceive and react to the system’s persuasive influence. Based on the persuasion knowledge model, this paper identifies various persuasive designs (anthropomorphic features, …

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The study aims to identify key factors influencing telecommuters' videoconferencing acceptance in the United States of America in a context of generalization to every industry. The study looks at a mixture of individual factors like self-efficacy and computer knowledge and organizational factors like corporate support. The seven-point Likert scale measurement was used to build a survey in The Statistical Package for the Social Science (SPSS). The study then applied a modified version of the original technology acceptance model (TAM) to investigate the factors influencing telecommuters' videoconferencing acceptance. A quantitative cross-sectional study design collected six hundred and ninety-four (694) valid responses …

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The study sought to investigate the relationships between corporate response to the 2020 police killings and job satisfaction, corporate response and organizational commitment, and the relationship between job satisfaction and organizational commitment. The study also tested how those relationships were moderated by race, gender, and political affiliation.
A structural equation model was used to test the relationships. Three structural models with differing items were used to measure the corporate response construct. The baseline model used a mix of items from the internal corporate response and the brand activism scales. Two other structural models, one with only the internal corporate response …

Monetized Competitive Peer-To-Peer Skill-Based Game Play–An Introduction, Becky Harris, Bill Coley, Peter Gan, Anh-Vu Nguyen
International Gaming Institute Faculty Research
The COVID pandemic has changed the world in ways, both large and small, forever. One unexpected way the world changed was when live sports suddenly went dark and esports began experiencing attention from betting audiences that were suddenly starving for content.1 Esports also received a second glance from gaming regulators. And, though not exactly suddenly (even though it felt like it), approvals for wagering on esports were granted in a variety of jurisdictions, most notably Colorado and Nevada.2
A subset of the larger esports environment, peer-to-peer (P2P) skill-based play is hardly a new concept. You can find it …

A Look At Contributing Factors That Affect Female Underrepresentation In Management, In The United States, Nushine W. Hosseini
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study examines contributing factors that affect female underrepresentation in management, in the United States (U.S.), within the U.S. workforce. The primary variables of interest are intrinsic motivation, work life balance and organizational climate support, which have typically not been reviewed in depth, in prior research.
Using a framework of varied theoretical approaches, this research studies the relationship between the above-mentioned constructs and gender effect, as related to interest in career advancement opportunities and female leadership underrepresentation within organizations.
The results of this study further validate existing research and highlights the importance of establishing programs, geared towards shifting mindsets and …

Antitrust Liability For False Advertising: A Response To Carrier & Tushnet, Susannah Gagnon, Herbert J. Hovenkamp
Antitrust Liability For False Advertising: A Response To Carrier & Tushnet, Susannah Gagnon, Herbert J. Hovenkamp
All Faculty Scholarship
This reply briefly considers when false advertising can give rise to antitrust liability. The biggest difference between tort and antitrust liability is that the latter requires harm to the market, which is critically dependent on actual consumer response. As a result, the biggest hurdle a private plaintiff faces in turning an act of false advertising into an antitrust offense is proof of causation – to what extent can a decline in purchase volume or other market rejection be specifically attributed to the defendant’s false claims? That requirement dooms the great majority of false advertising claims attacked as violations of the …

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Research Publications
Community engagement is well established as a key to improving public health. Prior food environment research has largely studied community engagement as an intervention component, leaving much unknown about how food retailers may already engage in this work. The purpose of this study was to explore the community engagement activities employed by neighborhood food retailers located in lower-income communities with explicit health missions to understand the ways stores involve and work with their communities. A multiple case study methodology was utilized among seven retailers in urban U.S. settings, which collected multiple sources of data at each retailer, including in-depth interviews, …
Is Generational Diversity Good For Engagement? Generational Diversity's Moderation Of The Relationship Between An Employee's Perception Of Leadership Effectiveness And Their Own Engagement, Matthew J. Baumann
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation manuscript is rooted in the notion that an employee’s perception of their immediate supervisor’s leadership effectiveness, and the associated social exchange, are significant contributors to their engagement. Engagement, when consistently elevated, results in positive organizational outcomes. While perceived leadership effectiveness and engagement present a relatively intuitive connection, other less clearly defined factors might moderate this relationship. These factors include a myriad of supervisor and employee traits and behaviors, many of which represent levels and dimensions of diversity. Diversity, when misunderstood and subsequently over or underestimated, can result in unforeseen impact to organizational outcomes. One critical diversity construct is …
Hiring People With Disabilities From An Employer’S Perspective And Organizational Citizenship Behavior, Claude B. Kershner Iv
Hiring People With Disabilities From An Employer’S Perspective And Organizational Citizenship Behavior, Claude B. Kershner Iv
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
When employers hire people with disabilities, collective behavioral change occurs within organizations. Specifically, attitudes towards people with disabilities improve through professional interventions and encourage organizational citizenship behavior. Previous studies have demonstrated the economic and client-focused impact of hiring people with disabilities — resulting in a tested model of competitive integrated employment. This study indicates that — when organizations employ best practices when integrating people with disabilities into the workplace — there is a performance-based behavioral change in non-disabled employees.
This study uses intergroup contact theory and social exchange theory to develop a model and a corresponding survey instrument that measures …

This dissertation is comprised of three essays that focus on the topics related to order routing choices in the U.S. equity market. This research provides insights into the effect of the routing order choice to dark and lit venues on the market quality under the multiple types of the event. The empirical results are significant and robust. There are three chapters included: the first chapter discusses the dynamic fragmentation of dark and lit venues and market quality pre-and post-zero brokerage commission events. Major retail brokers that eliminate commissions dramatically increase their market share of client assets. They increasingly routed orders …

The Effect Of Participation In Production Ideation Crowdsourcing On Affective Commitment As A Driver Of Customer Loyalty In The United States Lodging Industry, Clay Dickinson
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Crowdsourcing and customer loyalty are two salient issues that offer tremendous opportunities and challenges in the U.S. lodging industry. Crowdsourcing has been empirically demonstrated to deliver substantial benefits at a reduced cost while retaining and enhancing the value of loyal customers has been the elusive “Holy Grail” of lodging companies for at least the past four decades. Moreover, the cost of today’s loyalty programs in the lodging industry is high and growing, while the true loyalty they ostensibly engender is dubious. Extant literature on crowdsourcing and customer loyalty suggests that the two constructs share a number of base theories and …
