Resilience And Small Business Performance: An Empirical Investigation, Krittaya Sangboon, Leon Schjoedt Aug 2024

Resilience And Small Business Performance: An Empirical Investigation, Krittaya Sangboon, Leon Schjoedt

International Business and Entrepreneurship Faculty Publications

When small business owners encounter vicissitudes, does their resilience help them bounce back quickly to survive and be successful? Is their resilience more pronounced when they perceive the environment to be hostile? Answering this question is the purpose of this study. Using data from 105 small business owners in multiple industries, the results show that small business owners’ resilience and small business performance are positively associated, and that when they perceive the environment to be hostile, the effect of resilience is stronger. While validating findings in the extant literature, this study enhances the veracity of past findings by examining small …

Students As Value Co-Creators In The Business Education Ecosystem, Maria Petrescu, John Gironda, Anjala S. Krishen, Adina Dudau, J. Ricky Fergurson, Steven A. Stewart, Philip Kitchen, Monica Fine Aug 2024

Students As Value Co-Creators In The Business Education Ecosystem, Maria Petrescu, John Gironda, Anjala S. Krishen, Adina Dudau, J. Ricky Fergurson, Steven A. Stewart, Philip Kitchen, Monica Fine

Publications

Departing from the dyadic paradigm of students versus business schools in marketing and business education, this article utilizes a pluralistic perspective to account for and investigate various stakeholder groups’ value expectations and roles as we develop and examine a value co-creation ecosystem framework for marketing and business education. Service-Dominant Logic and Authority Theory are used as theoretical lenses along with a mixed-method approach to conduct three studies: (a) a fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA), (b) a qualitative conceptual mapping content analysis, and (c) a three-round quantitative Delphi study. The results provide insights into the differing elements of value and level …

Prototypically Small: An Exploration Of Consumers’ Small Business Prototypes, Michael R. Jenkins Aug 2024

Prototypically Small: An Exploration Of Consumers’ Small Business Prototypes, Michael R. Jenkins

Publications

Purpose

As consumers interact with various small businesses, they develop a mental image, called a prototype, to represent what small businesses are as a generalized, conceptual category. However, prior research has said little about what this small business prototype entails. Thus, the aim of this study is to explore consumers’ perceptions of the prototypical small business by identifying common attributes among small businesses that differentiate them from large businesses.

Design/methodology/approach

This study undertakes a thorough review of the relevant consumer research literature for the attributes that consumers use to evaluate small businesses. Then, using a contemporary parallel analysis approach, it …

Actuarial Implications Of Prevented Planting Coverage, Dylan Turner, Francis Tsiboe, Hunter D. Biram, Lawson Connor Aug 2024

Actuarial Implications Of Prevented Planting Coverage, Dylan Turner, Francis Tsiboe, Hunter D. Biram, Lawson Connor

Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness Faculty Publications and Presentations

Within the Federal Crop Insurance Program (FCIP), prevented planting (PP) coverage provides payments for pre-planting costs associated with crops that ultimately cannot be planted due to adverse weather. PP indemnities, which are not considered production losses within the FCIP rating methodology, influence premium rates differently than typical losses. This study utilizes a panel data set consisting of approximately 77,697 county level observations from RMA's summary of business to identify the relationship between the prevalence of prevent plant use and a number of actuarial related outcomes. Overall, we find that increases in the share of total indemnities attributable to PP claims …

100 Companies Championing Women In 2024: Best Practices For Utah Companies, Kolene Anderson, Susan R. Madsen

Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications

State leaders continue to boast that Utah is at the “forefront of innovative and awe-inspiring economic opportunity initiatives,”1 with a “robust list of accolades [that] is impressive” (e.g., among top states for affordability, best economic outlook, best state for social mobility, best state to start a business). Yet, for the past nine consecutive years, Utah has been ranked as WalletHub’s worst state for women’s equality.2 This includes being placed as 49th of 50 in “Workplace Environment,” based on metrics such as income disparity, higher-income disparity, and the disparity in share of executive positions. Although some continue to justify …

Faids: Artificial Intelligence Developmental Systems Framework For Predicting And Preventing Cyberattacks In Supply Chain Networks, Lordt Becklines Aug 2024

Faids: Artificial Intelligence Developmental Systems Framework For Predicting And Preventing Cyberattacks In Supply Chain Networks, Lordt Becklines

Research & Publications

Cyber threats and attacks disrupt and damages supply chain networks (SCNs), which are complex and interlinked. Current methods to predict and prevent cyberattacks are inadequate and ineffective. This research proposes an AI developmental systems framework (FAIDS) to protect SCNs from cyberattacks. The framework has four components: (1) an AI threat intelligence system; (2) an AI risk assessment system; (3) an AI decision support system; and (4) an AI learning and adaptation system. The framework is tested on a simulated retail SCN. The results show that the framework can predict and prevent cyberattacks and improve the network's resilience and security. The …

Working Capital And Cash Flow Tools To Improve Farm Business Performance, Matthew Stockton

Cornhusker Economics

The point of this short essay is to briefly review the need and purpose of both tools, hoping that such a review will help farm managers and operators use them to reach their higher potential and improve their businesses and lives. Working capital represents the businesses’ ability to deal with short-term conditions and its resilience conferred upon it as a result of past performance in accumulating liquid assets. The cash flow document provides the ebb and flow of liquid assets during the normal cycle of doing business, providing recognizable events, plans that can be scrutinized, and identifiable challenges. These tools, …

How Cultural Intelligence Facilitates Employee Creativity: The Roles Of Intercultural Citizenship Behavior And Perceived Disharmony, Yang Yang, Qin Yang, Crystal Jiang Aug 2024

How Cultural Intelligence Facilitates Employee Creativity: The Roles Of Intercultural Citizenship Behavior And Perceived Disharmony, Yang Yang, Qin Yang, Crystal Jiang

Management Department Faculty Journal Articles

Employee creativity is widely recognized as a pivotal factor for organizational innovation. Despite the known benefits of cultural intelligence (CQ) in enhancing task performance in intercultural environments, little research has examined the relationship between individual CQ and creativity. Drawing from the interactionist perspective, where creativity arises from the dynamic interaction between individuals and their environments, this research explores how individual CQ dimensions (metacognitive and motivational) enhance creativity through social interactions and cultural environments in multinational corporations (MNCs). Using a sample of 116 employees from three multinational companies, this study examines the relationship among individual CQ, intercultural citizenship behavior (intercultural OCB), …

Transgender And Gender Non-Conforming (Tgnc) Leaders And Leadership, Galen J. Talis Aug 2024

Transgender And Gender Non-Conforming (Tgnc) Leaders And Leadership, Galen J. Talis

Libraries

The author presents highlights from a paper accepted at the Academy of Management Annual Meeting. A 12-minute videorecording is also available.
Gender and leadership research has traditionally employed a binary framework, overlooking the experiences of transgender and gender non-conforming (TGNC) leaders and forcing leaders of all genders and intersectional identities into a dichotomous frame. This paper reviewed interdisciplinary literature using a robust search strategy in three academic databases and Google Scholar, as well as across eight leadership studies journals. Sixteen sources involving 440 leaders’ experiences were found. The author conducted a thematic analysis to explore how TGNC leaders’ experiences challenge …

A Case Study Of Using Social Media Influencers For Sponsored Posts, Meagen Rockenbach Aug 2024

A Case Study Of Using Social Media Influencers For Sponsored Posts, Meagen Rockenbach

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The use of social media changed consumer behavior and how company leaders conduct business, including the way that they promote products and services. Instagram is a social media platform that many companies use to promote products and services. In the beauty and lifestyle industry, company officials hire social media influencers for influencer marketing campaigns. In the Unites States, the Federal Trade Commission has rules for these sponsored posts that influencers must disclose that they are working with a brand within the sponsored post. This study was to establish a connection between Instagram influencers and their use of disclosed sponsorship in …

Retention As A Challenge For Healthcare Managers: A Look Into The Field Of Applied Behavior Analysis, Gertrude Asante Aug 2024

Retention As A Challenge For Healthcare Managers: A Look Into The Field Of Applied Behavior Analysis, Gertrude Asante

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Turnover and retention are issues within the healthcare field that continuously need attention from organization executives and healthcare managers. With the landscape of the workforce ever-evolving, employee satisfaction and how it is related to retention and turnover continue to be pivotal in assessing long-term success for an organization. This rings true especially for the field of applied behavior analysis and their skilled clinicians, as the field over the years has battled with attrition of their Board-Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBA) and Registered Behavior Technicians (RBT).

Recognising Ecological Reflexivity: An Alternative Approach To Partnership Capabilities For Collaborative Governance, Joanna Stanberry, David F. Murphy, Janis Bragan Balda Aug 2024

Recognising Ecological Reflexivity: An Alternative Approach To Partnership Capabilities For Collaborative Governance, Joanna Stanberry, David F. Murphy, Janis Bragan Balda

International Business and Entrepreneurship Faculty Publications

Ecological reflexivity provides a key lever for the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) but is underexplored in one prominent context: collaborative governance particularly associated with SDG 17. Using an exploratory study and novel approach to Q methodology, we investigate capabilities needed for advancing collaborative governance and cross-sector partnering through an exploratory study. Rather than treating these capacities as universal standards or aims for collaboration between varied stakeholders, they were offered as options that actors may value and choose to advance (or not). Local sustainability-focused actors in North West England sorted capabilities as statements, which discursively reframe multi-stakeholder partnership …

A Business Model For Communication Design Enterprises (Paper), Con Kennedy Aug 2024

A Business Model For Communication Design Enterprises (Paper), Con Kennedy

Academic Articles

Several international reports and studies indicate that the Communication Design sector has a skill deficit in entrepreneurship and business management, and a greater understanding of these topics is needed. Some authors advocate applying existing business models for design enterprises. However, the skill deficit prevails. It is worth noting that these reports discuss the entrepreneurship deficit in general terms without an explanation of the causes of this deficit or how to remedy the issue. Therefore, this paper explores the development of a Business Model specific for Design Entrepreneurs for deployment in Communication Design enterprises. A theoretical framework for a specific business …

Conservation Decision Making And Agricultural Land Leasing - An Experimental Investigation Of The Role Of Gender, Diya Ganguly, Simanti Banerjee, Christopher Gustafson Aug 2024

Conservation Decision Making And Agricultural Land Leasing - An Experimental Investigation Of The Role Of Gender, Diya Ganguly, Simanti Banerjee, Christopher Gustafson

Cornhusker Economics

This research investigated the impact of landowner gender and of the different types of contract leases offered by them to a male tenant, on the conservation (or non-conservation) choice made by the tenant. Specifically, we investigate if a) female and male landowners offer different rental contracts and b) whether tenants choose different actions based on the landowner’s gender. For this purpose, we implemented a controlled, gender-context-loaded economic experiment with university students, in which we tested contract and land use choice under different treatments for three types of rental contracts – fixed rent, fixed rent with penalty, and fixed rent with …

The Food Production-Consumption Chain: Fighting Food Insecurity, Loss, And Waste With Technology, Dhruv Grewal, Abhijit Guha, Stephanie M. Noble, Kara Bentley Aug 2024

The Food Production-Consumption Chain: Fighting Food Insecurity, Loss, And Waste With Technology, Dhruv Grewal, Abhijit Guha, Stephanie M. Noble, Kara Bentley

Business Faculty Publications and Presentations

The UN’s Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12 seeks to achieve sustainable food production and consumption, including reduced food loss and waste; SDG 2 proposes the goal of zero hunger. In pursuit of these goals, technology arguably has a central role, at every level of the food value chain. To establish this role, the authors identify and examine current technologies aimed at increasing food production and suitably redistributing unused food, as tactics to combat food loss and waste, with the shared end goal of reducing food insecurity. A proposed 2 × 2 typology illustrates how existing technologies can influence food production, …
