Production Box Cost Estimating Relationships For Dod Avionics, Carla J. Cisneros, Edward D. White, Brandon M. Lucas, Jonathan D. Ritschel, Robert D. Fass, Shawn M. Valentine

Faculty Publications

The authors use historical information obtained from the Cost Assessment Data Enterprise to estimate recurring production unit cost for DoD avionics via cost estimating relationships (CERs). The specific modeled responses include mean unit cost, median unit cost, and the 100th production unit cost (T100) utilizing learning curve theory. For T100, the authors adopt both a multiplicative and an additive error for CER comparison. Recommended CERs consist of the mean unit cost and the T100 utilizing a multiplicative error. Moreover, results reveal that weight has a significant effect on cost as well as a potential underaccounting of real price change or …

Every year the United States invests $3.2 billion in the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program to promote innovation among the nation’s small businesses. Half of this investment is from the DoD. This research considers the challenges faced by small businesses innovating with the DoD, particularly those awarded SBIR contracts with the United States Air Force. The authors surveyed 286 unique small businesses that were previously awarded an Air Force SBIR contract. By asking the survey respondents open-ended questions and categorizing their responses, they pinpoint unaddressed challenges from the small business perspective. By categorizing survey responses through Qualitative Content Analysis, …

The Changing Nature Of Work And Its Effects On Employee Well-Being, Lauren O'Connell Oct 2024

The Changing Nature Of Work And Its Effects On Employee Well-Being, Lauren O'Connell

Student Publications

The nature of work is constantly evolving, shaped by societal shifts and the absence of a universal standard for organizations. Remote work, initially a temporary solution during the COVID-19 pandemic, has emerged as a lasting norm, with flexible work-from-home (WFH) arrangements becoming a defining feature of the modern workplace. Despite the growing prevalence of WFH, limited research remains on its effects on employee well-being. This paper examines the benefits of WFH, like flexibility and autonomy, alongside challenges, such as longer hours, reduced supervisor support, and weakened employee connections. These trade-offs impact roles that depend on a positive and cohesive team …

The False Choice Between Digital Regulation And Innovation, Anu Bradford Oct 2024

The False Choice Between Digital Regulation And Innovation, Anu Bradford

Faculty Scholarship

This Article challenges the common view that more stringent regulation of the digital economy inevitably compromises innovation and undermines technological progress. This view, vigorously advocated by the tech industry, has shaped the public discourse in the United States, where the country’s thriving tech economy is often associated with a staunch commitment to free markets. U.S. lawmakers have also traditionally embraced this perspective, which explains their hesitancy to regulate the tech industry to date. The European Union has chosen another path, regulating the digital economy with stringent data privacy, antitrust, content moderation, and other digital regulations designed to shape the evolution …

Commercial Friendships In Pubs: Defining The Quality, Levels, And Process, Sake Jan Velthuis, Ondrej Mitas, Erwin Losekoot, Marcel Bastiaansen

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

This research explores commercial friendship within Dutch pubs, focusing on the transition from transactional to personal interactions between bartenders and guests. The study uses semi-structured interviews and thematic analysis to reveal that commercial friendship shares many similarities with non-commercial friendship but differs in important aspects. We found six levels of commercial friendship that range from minimal interactions, categorized as 'guest,' to deep, personal connections identified as 'best friend.' We identified three dimensions of commercial friendship quality: activities, self-disclosure, and social support. A critical finding is the 'tipping point'—a stage in the relationship development where interactions shift from professional to personal, …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

The rapid integration of generative AI (GenAI) into industries and society has prompted a re-evaluation of copyright and intellectual property rights (IPR) frameworks. GenAI's ability to produce original content using data from human-created sources raises critical ethical and legal concerns. Current copyright and IPR frameworks, designed around human authorship, are insufficient to address these challenges. This study, using a multi-perspective approach, explores GenAI's disruptive potential in replicating or transforming copyrighted materials, challenging established IPR norms. Findings highlight gaps in legislation and the opacity of GenAI platforms. To address these issues, this study presents a Dynamic Ethical Framework linked to a …

Finance Faculty Publications

A 2024 book titled “How Sanctions Work, Iran and the Impact of Economic Warfare” by Narges Bajoghli, Vali Nasr, Djavad Salehi-Isfahani, and Ali Vaez argues that sanctions have had no impact on the behavior of the Islamic Republic in Iran (IR hereafter) and have instead inflicted pain on the ordinary Iranians. While the book does offer a useful description of the evolution of the sanctions against the IR, it fails in its analysis and conclusions.

Insect Pests And Their Management In Oats, Department Of Primary Industries And Regional Development, Western Australia Oct 2024

Insect Pests And Their Management In Oats, Department Of Primary Industries And Regional Development, Western Australia

Grains and other field crops factsheets

Field pests

Damage from invertebrate pests is generally not a major factor for oat crops, however there is a zero tolerance to live pests in export hay.

Significant damage can occur if pest populations build up. Planning rotations to minimise pest carryover, timely sowing, adequate crop nutrition, and good control of weed and root diseases will assist in reducing the likelihood of crop damage by insect pests. Check crops regularly throughout their growth for field insects.

• Control redlegged earth mite and lucerne flea during the seedling stage if necessary.

• Aphids should be checked for and controlled from flag …

Sequential Investment Decisions For Mining Projects Using Compound Multiple Volatility Real Options Approach, Atul Chandra, Peter R. Hartley Oct 2024

Sequential Investment Decisions For Mining Projects Using Compound Multiple Volatility Real Options Approach, Atul Chandra, Peter R. Hartley

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Managers evaluating investment decisions in mining projects have reported using the net present value approach (NPV). However, NPV has the drawback of collapsing variations from uncertainties in future project cash flows into a fixed expected project value today. Ignoring future uncertainties and contingencies can lead managers to make incorrect up-front binary decisions, such as investing in or abandoning the project now. The real options analysis approach (ROA) instead captures variations from uncertainties as volatilities in project value and allows flexibility in investment decisions to be contingent on information as it is revealed. Managers we consulted agreed that ROA is superior …

Symmetrical And Asymmetrical Approaches To Brand Loyalty– The Case Of Intelligent Voice Assistants, Wei He, Catherine Prentice, Xuequn Wang Oct 2024

Symmetrical And Asymmetrical Approaches To Brand Loyalty– The Case Of Intelligent Voice Assistants, Wei He, Catherine Prentice, Xuequn Wang

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

This study investigates symmetrical and asymmetrical relationships among intrinsic needs, consumer engagement, attachment, and brand loyalty in the case of intelligent voice assistants (IVAs). Conducted with IVA users in the United States, the research employs structural equation modelling (SEM) to examine direct, linear relationships and fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) for exploring complex, non-linear relationships. The findings indicate that psychological needs, consumer interactions with IVAs, and emotional bonds significantly influence brand loyalty. Furthermore, the fsQCA method reveals that various combinations of these factors contribute to brand loyalty in distinct ways. This study advances the literature on consumer behaviour and branding …

Does Ceo Agreeableness Personality Mitigate Real Earnings Management?, Shan Liu, Xingying Wu, Nan Hu Oct 2024

Does Ceo Agreeableness Personality Mitigate Real Earnings Management?, Shan Liu, Xingying Wu, Nan Hu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Despite efforts to mitigate aggressive financial reporting, earnings management remains challenging to parties interested in inhibiting its dysfunctional effects. Using linguistic algorithms to assess CEO agreeableness personality from their unscripted texts in conference calls, we find that it is a determinant that mitigates a firm's real earnings management. Furthermore, such an effect is more pronounced when firms confront intensive market competition and financial distress and have weaker managerial entrenchment or when CEOs face stronger internal governance. Our findings persist even after we utilize several alternative real earnings management metrics and control other confounding personalities in prior earnings management studies. The …

Temporal Relational Graph Convolutional Network Approach To Financial Performance Prediction, Jeyaraman Brindha Priyadarshini, Bing Tian Dai, Yuan Fang Oct 2024

Temporal Relational Graph Convolutional Network Approach To Financial Performance Prediction, Jeyaraman Brindha Priyadarshini, Bing Tian Dai, Yuan Fang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Accurately predicting financial entity performance remains a challenge due to the dynamic nature of financial markets and vast unstructured textual data. Financial knowledge graphs (FKGs) offer a structured representation for tackling this problem by representing complex financial relationships and concepts. However, constructing a comprehensive and accurate financial knowledge graph that captures the temporal dynamics of financial entities is non-trivial. We introduce FintechKG, a comprehensive financial knowledge graph developed through a three-dimensional information extraction process that incorporates commercial entities and temporal dimensions and uses a financial concept taxonomy that ensures financial domain entity and relationship extraction. We propose a temporal and …

Do Women Receive Worse Financial Advice?, Utpal Bhattacharya, Amit Kumar, Sujata Visaria, Jing Zhao Oct 2024

Do Women Receive Worse Financial Advice?, Utpal Bhattacharya, Amit Kumar, Sujata Visaria, Jing Zhao

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We arranged for trained undercover men and women to pose as potential clients and visit all 65 local financial advisory firms in Hong Kong. At financial planning firms, but not at securities firms, women were more likely than men to receive advice to buy only individual or only local securities. Female clients who signaled high confidence, high risk tolerance, or a domestic outlook were especially likely to receive this suboptimal advice. Our theoretical model explains these patterns as a result of statis-tical discrimination interacting with advisors’ incentives. Taste-based discrimination is unlikely to explain the results.

Insights From An Updated Personnel Selection Meta-Analytic Matrix: Revisiting General Mental Ability Tests’ Role In The Validity-Diversity Trade-Off, Christopher M. Berry, Filip Lievens, Charlene Zhang, Paul R. Sackett Oct 2024

Insights From An Updated Personnel Selection Meta-Analytic Matrix: Revisiting General Mental Ability Tests’ Role In The Validity-Diversity Trade-Off, Christopher M. Berry, Filip Lievens, Charlene Zhang, Paul R. Sackett

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

General mental ability (GMA) tests have long been at the heart of the validity–diversity trade-off, with conventional wisdom being that reducing their weight in personnel selection can improve adverse impact, but that this results in steep costs to criterion-related validity. However, Sackett et al. (2022) revealed that the criterion-related validity of GMA tests has been considerably overestimated due to inappropriate range restriction corrections. Thus, we revisit the role of GMA tests in the validity-diversity trade-off using an updated meta-analytic correlation matrix of the relationships six selection methods (biodata, GMA tests, conscientiousness tests, structured interviews, integrity tests, and situational judgment tests) …

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Written from an educator’s perspective, the paper aims to examine the increasing use of chatbot technology capable of answering user queries in various fields such as commerce, public service delivery, urban areas, higher education etc. by simulating human conversation through text messages or voice commands. We analyse why smart bots have become popular technologies in the context smart cities; shed light on different types of bots (chatbots, large language models such as ChatGPT, flying bots); and explain how we use bots as teaching tool in an introductory AI for business course. A key argument putting forward is that smart bots …

Patient historical behaviors were significantly associated with appointment attendance. In particular, a larger number of previous visits, more historical no-shows, more historical …

Physical Frictions And Digital Banking Adoption, Hyun Soo Choi, Roger Loh Oct 2024

Physical Frictions And Digital Banking Adoption, Hyun Soo Choi, Roger Loh

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The behavioral literature suggests that minor frictions can elicit desirable behavior without obvious coercion. Using closures of ATMs in a densely populated city as an instrument for small frictions to physical banking access, we find that customers affected by ATM closures increase their usage of the bank's digital platform. Other spillover effects of this adoption of financial technology include increases in point-of-sale (POS) transactions, electronic funds transfers, automatic bill payments and savings, and a reduction in cash usage. Our results show that minor frictions can help overcome the status-quo bias and facilitate significant behavior change.

Network Effects, Word Of Mouth, And Entry Performance: A Study Of Digital Freemium Products, Noman Shaheer, Liang Chen, Jingtao Yi, Sali Li, Huiwen Su

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

International entry research rarely examines strategies affecting entry performance in a target country, largely due to data limitations in the traditional multinational enterprise setting. However, the emergence of digital business with trackable international performance data helps address this gap. We utilize digital freemium products as our research context to examine the effect of two major demand-side strategies associated with freemium products, network effects and word-of-mouth (WOM), on entry performance across different institutional environments. By analyzing 1,891 freemium games, we show that lower network readiness of a target country strengthens the impact of network effects on entry performance whereas higher network …

A Garch-Midas Approach To Modelling Stock Returns, Ezekiel N.N. Nortey, Ruben Agbeli, Godwin Debrah, Theophilus Ansah-Narh, Edmund F. Agyemang

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

Measuring stock market volatility and its determinants is critical for stock market participants, as volatility spillover effects affect corporate performance. This study adopted a novel approach to analysing and implementing GARCH-MIDAS modelling methods. The classical GARCH as a benchmark and the univariate GARCH-MIDAS framework are the GARCH family models whose forecasting outcomes are examined. The outcome of GARCH-MIDAS analyses suggests that inflation, interest rate, exchange rate, and oil price are significant determinants of the volatility of the Johannesburg Stock Market All Share Index. While for Nigeria, the volatility reacts significantly to the exchange rate and oil price. Furthermore, inflation, exchange …

EKU Faculty and Staff Scholarship

This study investigates the difficulties that expatriates encounter while relocating to a foreign cultural environment. The examination of the issue is based on the results of primary research conducted among the Japanese community living and working in Hungary. Many circumstances make it difficult for an expat to feel at ease in the host country. Integration and thus the success of the posting are greatly hampered by overcoming cultural differences as well as linguistic challenges in a non-English speaking country. Language fluency issues are stated to trigger a series of practical, task-related barriers as well as broader social and emotional difficulties. …

Nebraska Monthly Economic Indicators: September 27, 2024, Eric Thompson Sep 2024

Nebraska Monthly Economic Indicators: September 27, 2024, Eric Thompson

Leading Economic Indicator Reports

The Leading Economic Indicator-Nebraska fell by 0.69% in August 2024, after rising in both June and July. The decrease in the leading indicator, designed to predict economic growth six months into the future, implies that the Nebraska economy will grow at a moderate pace through the end of 2024 and in early 2025. There was a decrease in manufacturing hours worked in August, as weakness in the national manufacturing sector spread to Nebraska. There was also a drop in building permits for single-family homes, suggesting that state homebuilding activity remains subdued.

The Integrated Violin-Box-Scatter (Vbs) Plot To Visualize The Distribution Of A Continuous Variable, David W. Gerbing

Business Faculty Publications and Presentations

The histogram remains a widely used tool for visualization of the distribution of a continuous variable, despite the disruption of binning the underlying continuity into somewhat arbitrarily sized discrete intervals imposed by the simplicity of its pre-computer origins. Alternatives include three visualizations, namely a smoothed density distribution such as a violin plot, a box plot, and the direct visualization of the individual data values as a one-dimensional scatter plot. To promote ease of use, the plotting function discussed in this work, Plot(x), automatically integrates these three visualizations of a continuous variable x into what is called a VBS plot here, …

Influencer Authenticity: To Grow Or To Monetize, Cristina Nistor, Matthew Selove, J. Miguel Villas-Boas

Business Faculty Articles and Research

Social media influencers can grow their number of followers by endorsing products that are authentic for their social media persona or, alternatively, monetize their followers by endorsing a wider variety of products. We develop a dynamic model in which an influencer continuously decides whether to be authentic as she balances increasing awareness with generating revenues from sponsored posts. We derive conditions in which the influencer is authentic during an early growth phase, but she becomes inauthentic once a large enough fraction of potential followers are aware of her. Celebrities become inauthentic at a lower awareness level than pure social media …
