The Effect Of Robot Anthropomorphism On Employee Recovery Of Robot Service Failures: The Mediation Of Employee Empathy, Jiangchi Zhang, Chaowu Xie, Songshan Huang
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Purpose: This study aims to investigate employee responses to robot service failures. It examines how employees recover from such failures at varying levels of robot anthropomorphism, considering the mediating role of employee empathy and the moderating role of service failure type. Design/methodology/approach: Three scenario-based experiments were designed and implemented. The statistical analysis techniques adopted were independent samples t-test, multivariate analysis of variance and regression. Findings: Findings reveal: a curvilinear relationship exists between employee proactive/reactive recovery and robot anthropomorphism; employee empathy mediates this relationship; and physical affordance failures prompt low proactive and high reactive recovery for low-anthropomorphism robots, while cognitive affordance …

A Metaheuristic Approach For The Multi-Objective Sustainable Vehicle Routing Problem, Reza Moghdani, Khodakaram Salimifard, Emrah Demir, Sasan Barak, Adel Aazami, Seyed Ashkan Hosseini Shekarabi
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
This study introduces the Multi-Objective Sustainable Vehicle Routing Problem (MOSVRP) with time windows, designed for congested urban networks. The model simultaneously addresses economic, environmental, and social sustainability by minimizing costs and emissions while maximizing customer satisfaction through enhanced service at pickup nodes. To manage the complexity of large-scale urban routing, we propose a novel Voronoi diagram-based network shrinking procedure that significantly reduces computational effort. More specifically, the model incorporates time-dependent traffic patterns to capture realistic urban conditions. For the solution, we propose a tailored metaheuristic, the enhanced Multi-Objective Volleyball Premier League (MOVPL) algorithm, which incorporates reference point guidance, disruption operators, …

The Impact Of Film Factors On Destination Image And Travel Intention: A Comparative Study Between Vietnamese And Korean Film Industry, Gavin Northey, Hoa Hong Pham, Colette Gallagher, Steve D’Alessandro, Phan Thi Minh Thu, Quan Ha Minh Tran, Trang Thị Thùy Dương
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Film tourism represents a growing opportunity for destination marketers, yet limited research examines how specific filmic components within a film’s dramatic architecture influence destination image and travel intention. This study addresses this gap through a sequential explanatory mixed-methods design comprising three phases. First, a pre-test (n = 360) using exploratory factor analysis identified and validated four film components: plot, culture and tradition, scenery, and humanism. Second, a between-subjects quasi-experimental study with Vietnamese viewers (n = 792) employed partial least squares structural equation modeling to test how Korean versus Vietnamese films differentially influence domestic and international travel intentions. Third, semi-structured interviews …

Boardroom Dissent: An Integrative Review And Future Research Agenda, Aira Eirola, Pieter Jan Bezemer, Stephan Reinhold
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Research Question/Issue: Scholars and practitioners view boardroom dissent as central to the functioning of boards of directors. However, there is a lack of consensus on what dissent is, who is involved, when and where it happens, and whether it is a behavioral or cognitive phenomenon. This conceptual unclarity and related fragmentation of empirical results call for an integrative literature review to build a coherent agenda for future research. Research Findings/Results: A content-analysis of 73 articles published between 1997 and 2023 reveals three distinct research clusters that explore the empirical phenomenon: (1) dissent as expressed through voting, (2) dissent as diverging …
The Dynamic Integration Of National Culture In Organizational Structure For Entrepreneurial Success, Qianyu Lim
The Dynamic Integration Of National Culture In Organizational Structure For Entrepreneurial Success, Qianyu Lim
Senior Honors Theses
The impact of culture on management decisions has been heavily researched and discussed in the academic setting. However, the tools and frameworks currently applied in cultural studies present a static version of culture at a certain point in time. As entrepreneurship and its counterpart, intrapreneurship, arise to help create competitive advantage in a quickly shifting economic market, these points raise the question of the opportunity surrounding the consideration of culture as a living model in an equally dynamic business environment. To do so, a reiterative version of Bain’s Structure-Conduct-Performance paradigm will be used to illustrate the impact of culture in …

We draw from theories of generations and imprinting to introduce an alternative conceptualization of the effects of age on entrepreneurship—namely, entrepreneurs' generational imprints. We theorize how imprinted characteristics of entrepreneurs from a conservative generation (vs. a progressive generation) are positively (negatively) associated with higher levels of financial returns and negatively (positively) associated with higher engagement in corporate social responsibility. In two studies in the Mexican context, we find that entrepreneurs from a conservative generation create more financial value than social value, while entrepreneurs from a progressive generation create more social value than financial value. We also explore the intervening …

Data reveal that the physical effects of trauma exposure increasingly surface in business, social, and other settings. Exposure to trauma at any point in life can cause employee health concerns, yet many firms do not acknowledge or address this. Herein, we combine trauma theory with human capital theory to explain how manifestations of trauma exposure—hyperarousal, intrusion, and constriction—impact employee health and performance. This article outlines how each manifestation affects human capital deployment, and thus employee performance. It further demonstrates how these human capital deployment issues have individual- and unit-level performance implications. This article offers a theory linking health effects of …

The Marginal Value Of Public Pension Wealth: Evidence From Border House Prices, Darren Aiello, Asaf Bernstein, Mahyar Kargar, Ryan Lewis, Michael Schwert
Faculty Publications
We study how state pension windfalls affect property prices near state borders, where theory suggests real estate reflects the value of additional public resources. Windfalls, representing a source of state revenue about half the size of total taxes, provide economically significant and plausibly exogenous variation in fiscal conditions. We find that each dollar of pension asset returns increases border house prices by approximately two dollars, suggesting that governments allocate additional funds towards high-value projects or tax abatement rather than wasting incremental resources. Evidence of larger effects in financially constrained municipalities highlights how fiscal resources amplify welfare effects of economic shocks.

How Deep-Level And Surface-Level Board Diversity, Formal And Informal Social Structures Affect Innovation, Guoli Chen, Po-Hsuan Hsu, Yen Teik Lee, Daniel Z. Mack
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Despite a growing interest in understanding how board diversity shapes firms’ innovation, findings about the impact of board diversity have remained mixed. In this paper, we conceptualize board diversity as two forms – deep-level and surface-level – and find that these two forms of board diversity have opposing effects on a firm's innovation. We also theorize how formal and informal social structures can strengthen the positive effect of deep-level diversity yet simultaneously weaken the negative impact of surface-level diversity. We test our hypotheses with a panel of 42,432 firm-year observations from 2000 to 2019. Our paper contributes to the literature …

Identity-Based Autonomy And Its Impact On Connections With Identity-Linked Products And Brands, Keri L. Kettle, Carter Morgan, Americus Reed Ii
School of Marketing and Innovation Faculty Publications
We introduce a new characteristic of identity into the identity-based consumer behavior literature called identity-based autonomy: the autonomy (i.e., freedom from others' influence) versus heteronomy (i.e., real or perceived external influence) that people feel when enacting an identity. This new dimension thus captures how consumers enact a salient identity in an identity-relevant context. We create a new measure of identity-based autonomy to capture how this dimension varies across identities. We show that autonomous identities foster a greater sense of control over when, where, and how one uses identity-linked products. As a result, we demonstrate that people feel stronger connections …

Revisiting Circular Economy Rebound: Market Dynamics, Policy Implications, And Future Research Directions, Trevor Zink Ph.D., Benjamin H. Lowe, Andrea Genovese, David Font Vivaco
Management Faculty Works
The circular economy has gained momentum as a sustainability paradigm that aims to decouple economic growth from environmental degradation by promoting resource efficiency and waste minimization. However, mounting evidence points to a critical challenge: circular economy rebound (CER). This phenomenon occurs when efficiency improvements intended to reduce resource use provoke systemic, market, or behavioral responses that diminish or even reverse the anticipated environmental gains. This is particularly problematic within growth-oriented economies, where resource efficiency often reinforces rather than reduces consumption. This paper draws on insights from a roundtable discussion with leading experts—Trevor Zink, David Font Vivanco, and Andrea Genovese—to critically …

Based on qualitative data collected at the United States Military Academy (West Point), this research enhances our understanding of how individuals manage tensions between leading with authenticity and organizational pressures for conformity, resulting from a lack of alignment between their existing personal leadership prototypes and organizational prototypes of leadership. Our theoretical model moves beyond existing research on leader identity construction− which largely treats individuals as blank slates as they construct who they will be as leaders in organizations− by highlighting how individuals learn to enact a leadership approach during socialization that fits within their personal zone of acceptable authenticity and …

Cattle production is estimated to be the largest methane (CH4) emitter associated with consumer demand in the United States of America (U.S.). With a national commitment to reducing methane emissions by 30% before 2030, methane-reducing additives (MRAs) in livestock feed are being explored as a viable solution. This study investigated consumer preferences for low-methane ground beef produced using one of three MRAs with varying levels of methane mitigation: Aspagopsis taxiformis (seaweed), the organic compound 3-nitroxypropanol (3NOP), or a blend of essential oils (e.g. garlic extract and citrus). In a nationally representative survey, 3,009 respondents completed a labeled discrete …
