Two Decades Of Change: Evolving Costs Of Regulatory Compliance In The Produce Industry, Lynn Hamilton, Michael Mccullough Jan 2025

Two Decades Of Change: Evolving Costs Of Regulatory Compliance In The Produce Industry, Lynn Hamilton, Michael Mccullough

Agribusiness

Rising costs of regulation are an increasing concern for California growers. An initial study of regulatory costs in California agriculture was conducted in 2006, as means to compare California’s regulatory environment to other competing states. Industry groups in the Salinas Valley contacted Cal Poly to update the original study in 2018 as new state and federal laws imposed significantly higher regulatory burdens on growers, specifically with respect to food safety, water quality, labor wages, air quality and worker health and safety. This report updates the previous case study to reflect the 2024 regulatory environment for California growers, and provides a …

Vino Mundo: Introducing Wines Of The World To Costa Rica, Sarah Lee, Jacob Massoud, Chang Seob Yeo

Barowsky School of Business | Case Studies

Guillermo Aguilar, owner and founder of the Costa Rican restaurant Vino Mundo, turned off his computer and stood up from his chair. Sales at Vino Mundo had slowed down following the global pandemic, and Guillermo was exploring ways to revitalize his business. The ideas he had most recently considered included a new marketing strategy for the restaurant and creating an institute to educate Costa Ricans about wine and train individuals to become sommeliers. Guillermo left his office and then walked out to the restaurant’s patio to take in the beautiful panoramic views of San Jose. He had quite a few …

A Set Of Axioms Providing A Basis For Understanding And Analyzing Work Systems In Organizational Settings, Steven Alter Jan 2025

A Set Of Axioms Providing A Basis For Understanding And Analyzing Work Systems In Organizational Settings, Steven Alter

Business Analytics and Information Systems

This paper proposes 24 axioms that form a basis for understanding and analyzing sociotechnical and totally automated work systems in organizational settings. The introduction identifies reasons for trying to develop axioms of that type. Two background sections compare axioms with other types of “knowledge objects”, illustrate the minimal presence of axioms in the IS discipline, define the domain of relevance for the axioms discussed here, and explain the process of developing those axioms. The axioms are organized in five categories: 1) system in context, 2) system operation, 3) system goals and goal attainment, 4) system uncertainties, and 5) system-related change. …

Can An Llm Use Work System Axioms When Describing Work Systems For Requirements Analysis?, Steven Alter

Business Analytics and Information Systems

This research-in-progress paper presents part of an ongoing project related to using LLMs for describing, analyzing, and designing work systems (including information systems). General axioms that apply to any non-trivial WS or IS might provide a path toward new tools and methods. This paper identifies 24 work system axioms that extend earlier research. They are organized in five categories: 1) system in context, 2) system operation, 3) system goals and goal attainment, 4) system uncertainties, and 5) system-related change. The axioms potentially address the challenge of helping business and IS/IT professionals understand and collaborate around systems in organization. This preliminary …

An Empirical Analysis Of Factors Affecting The Commercial Adoption Of Autonomous Trucks, Christopher Mondy, Matias Enz, Daniel Rust

Educator Preparation & Leadership Faculty Works

Autonomous semi-trucks are poised to be a disruptive technology in the motor carrier industry, and many studies extol the virtues of autonomous vehicles. The benefits cited in these studies generally assume high market penetration rates, yet there is a lack of rigorous qualitative studies that investigate the factors that will drive autonomous truck adoption in the commercial transportation sector. This study describes a conceptual model featuring twelve factors that may affect autonomous truck adoption. These factors were identified from a grounded theory analysis of semi-structured interviews with a sample of transportation professionals from different companies, positions, and geographic regions within …

One Horse Power: The Environmental Consequences Of Horseback Riding Trails In Protected Areas And National Parks, Briana Kupic Jan 2025

One Horse Power: The Environmental Consequences Of Horseback Riding Trails In Protected Areas And National Parks, Briana Kupic

Hospitality Graduate Student Scholarship

Horseback riding is one of the traditional forms of recreation in national parks and protected areas, and can give visitors a special chance to explore these beautiful natural areas from a different perspective. However, the activity has raised concerns for its perceived effects on the environment. This paper synthesizes and reviews secondary literature on the environmental effects of horseback riding, and identifies four broad themes: disturbance to wildlife, degradation of water quality, loss of vegetation, and soil erosion. The evidence indicates that equines have the potential to inflict far greater trail damage and ecological impact than other trail participants, including …

In terms of this analysis, foodie is defined as “a person having an avid interest in the latest food fads”. (Definition of Foodie, 2018).

The Role Of Masculine And Feminine Gender Enactment In Hospitality Leadership, Michelle Russen, Mary Dawson, Tiffany Legendre Jan 2025

The Role Of Masculine And Feminine Gender Enactment In Hospitality Leadership, Michelle Russen, Mary Dawson, Tiffany Legendre

Marketing Faculty Publications

Purpose: The stereotypical assumptions of what it means to be hegemonically masculine and to be a leader are aligned in current society, potentially creating role incongruity for anyone who does not fit into this definition. The purpose of this study is to investigate whether masculine and feminine leadership traits of men and women hospitality managers affect employees’ intention to trust leaders and organizational attractiveness.

Design/Methods/Approach: Explanatory mixed methods were employed. First, two experiments (study 1 = woman manager, n = 137; study 2 = man manager, n = 117) were conducted with current hospitality employees to test the interaction of …

Against The Sale Of Homeopathy (And Other Ineffective Medicines), Jeffrey Moriarty Jan 2025

Against The Sale Of Homeopathy (And Other Ineffective Medicines), Jeffrey Moriarty

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Consumers spend billions of dollars per year on homeopathic products. But there is powerful evidence that these products don’t work, i.e., they are not medically effective. Should homeopathic products be for sale? I give reason for thinking that the answer is ‘no.’ It has been suggested that the sale of homeopathic products involves deception. This might be so in some cases, but the problem is simpler: it is that these products don’t do what people buy them to do. More precisely, homeopathic products don’t meet the “desire-satisfaction condition,” according to which products for sale in markets should satisfy the desires …

Drivers Of Foreign Direct Investment In Latin America, Daniel Flores Jan 2025

Drivers Of Foreign Direct Investment In Latin America, Daniel Flores

Research Honors

Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) has played a crucial role in driving economic growth across Latin America, yet the determinants influencing FDI inflows in the region remain contested. This research examines the effect of macroeconomic and institutional individual factors on FDI, employing a Dynamic Panel Vector Autoregressive (PVAR) model with the Generalized Method of Moments (GMM). Our findings reveal significant temporal variations in the determinants of FDI over time. Political stability was a decisive factor during 2002–2008, reflecting investor preference for predictable institutional environments amid favorable economic conditions. The 2009–2015 period showed weakened relationships between FDI and its determinants, potentially due …

It is common for inpatient medical floor RNs to care for an average of 5-7 patients per assignment plus the role of charge RN or preceptor, which borders the legal limit in the state of Connecticut. We believe that by eliminating an assignment for charge RN’s, safe staffing ratios can be achieved, and RN higher retention rates could be achieved with a strategic PICO investigation.

Off The Clock But Still At Work: Investigating The Relationship Between Workplace Incivility And Behavioral Disengagement, Doug Brown Jan 2025

Off The Clock But Still At Work: Investigating The Relationship Between Workplace Incivility And Behavioral Disengagement, Doug Brown

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

This thesis investigated the relationship between workplace incivility and behavioral disengagement, using emotional appraisal as a mediating factor. Data was collected through a survey method via Prolific. Using the transactional model of stress, I hypothesized that experienced incivility will be positively associated with behavioral disengagement as a coping mechanism. Additionally, I hypothesized that emotional appraisal would mediate the relationship between experienced workplace incivility and behavioral disengagement. By using a mediation model to test these hypotheses I aim to increase the understanding of workplace incivility and its negative impacts on individuals and the workplace as a whole. Results of the study …

Managers' Staging Of Earnings Conference Calls Around Actual Share Repurchases, Hong Kim Duong, Chuong Do, Huy N. Do Jan 2025

Managers' Staging Of Earnings Conference Calls Around Actual Share Repurchases, Hong Kim Duong, Chuong Do, Huy N. Do

Accounting Faculty Publications

We use earnings call transcripts to examine whether managers strategically change their disclosure behaviors before an actual share repurchase. Our findings suggest that managers use tone management to strategically portray a more negative outlook for the firm in the earnings call before an actual repurchase. In addition, we find that managers of repurchasing firms “cast” the call with more unfavorable analysts even when more favorable analysts are available. These disclosure strategies aim to influence the information flows to the market and allow repurchasing firms to repurchase their shares at a discounted price. We further show that insiders of repurchasing firms …
