A good example of cutting-edge analytics at the Huntsman School comes from the MIS department, where students Sterling Morris and Josh Light worked together with a team to create the entrepreneurial prizewinning Politicit.com website mentioned on page 7 in this magazine; it tracks keywords about politicians across the web through social media and key “influencers” to predict how public opinion is trending, even before polls have detected a change. Each candidate’s “IT” score is based on a neural network model that measures the buzz around that candidate.

Bennis and Goldsmith (2003) argued that “immediate demands for leadership confront us daily. Our cities are in crisis, our communities face turmoil, our political, religious, and business leaders are repeatedly charged with ethical violations, and the world’s multiple demands require our immediate attention” (pp. xi-xii). With such critical needs in society today, leadership development has become an important area of inquiry within human resource development (HRD), and is now emerging as foundational to our field. According to Rosser (2007), leadership development is a unique aspect of HRD “because it is important to both scholars and practitioners and is a common …

Receiving the benefits of postsecondary education is important to nations throughout the world. A more educated citizenry results in, among other things, less crime and poverty, increased physical and mental health of individuals, and greater economic growth (e.g., American Human Development Project, 2009; Pascarella, & Terenzini, 2005). These benefits are felt at all levels of society (i.e., individual, community, and national) and essentially define the social and economic structure of a nation. According to a Lumina Foundation (2009) report “college-attainment rates are rising in almost every industrialized or postindustrial country in the world, except the U.S.” (p.1). The graduation rate …

They have launched a new non-partisan website called politicit.com that automatically pulls data from a number of traditional press outlets and social media sources like Twitter, Facebook, and Wikipedia and gives readers a snapshot of what’s happening in the minute-by-minute online world. It analyzes a number of factors including online …

In November 2011, students at the Huntsman School noticed that the political discussion surrounding the presidential race was evolving from previous elections, as politics shifted from exclusively mainstream media to include blogs, Facebook, and Twitter. But traditional political polling does not capture real-time activity; it is weeks behind what is actually happening. With backgrounds in Management Information Systems, Finance, and Entrepreneurship, these students utilized their Huntsman School education to create a new website called “Politicit”. Using neural network technology, the site gathers information about political candidates from social networks and mainstream media and uses it to give each candidate an …

Mark ’95, and Jennifer ’93, Erickson have always believed in giving back to show gratitude. They wrote down these “dreams” and have kept the list. One item on the list was to remember the wonderful gift of education that Utah State provided. To show their appreciation, they recently established the Mark and Jennifer Erickson Endowment in the School of Accountancy …

The Impact Of A Secondary Market On A Consumer's Intention To Buy New Video Games, Nicole Forsgen-Velasquez

Data Analytics & Information Systems Faculty Publications

The secondary market for video game purchases is a multi-billion dollar industry that some believe is unfair to video game developers. Using the Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA), we investigated user attitudes and subjective norms and their affect on a consumer’s intention to buy new video games. While TRA has been used to study purchase intentions of material goods and digital goods, our study extends this work to investigate video games, which have both a physical and digital component. Based on a survey of 118 undergraduate students, two of the hypothesized relationships are significant predictors of intention to purchase: previous …

Unifying Pim Research: Fostering A Connection Between Descriptive Pim Studies And Prescriptive Outcomes, Anne R. Diekama

Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications

Descriptive Personal Information Management (PIM) studies inform us about PIM behavior and their findings should guide the design and development of PIM tools to support the behavior under study. Unfortunately, judging from the literature, descriptive studies do not always provide useful recommendations and PIM tool research is often carried out separately. This paper discusses what appears to be a possible research dichotomy and ways to bring the research back together. Three solutions are suggested: 1) PIM workshops where both types of studies are presented and researchers meet should be important venues for dissemination of results, cross-fertilization between different research areas, …

Optimization Of Crime Control Resources In A Society, Steven S. Thompson

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

This paper looks at the economics of crime control through the Phillips-Votey Societal Cost Function model and mathematically proves that there is a socially optimal point at which society should be devoting resources towards the prevention of crime. This allows the society to minimize the social cost of crime given a theoretical cost constraint. This paper take the model further by conducting comparative analysis to determine the effect that changes in the functional form of crime generation, and crime prevention will have on society as represented in the model. This paper also looks at the counter intuitive effect that growth …

Business Intelligence (BI), defined here as the creation and use of meaningful business information for management, has over the last 20 years shown over and over again its value to professional industry. The prevalence of BI has also demonstrated that a new brand of worker is needed to take advantage of the sophisticated tools available to modern industry. Evidence suggests modern universities have struggled to educate professionals on the tremendous impact BI can have on an organization if used properly. This work is a step in an endeavor to bridge that educational gap and generate an educational strategic advantage by …
