A study of shorthand usage as perceived by selected Ogden, Utah business executives was conducted to determine if curriculum changes must be made in Business Education Department programs in order to meet the secretarial training requirements of Ogden, Utah Business. Data were collected by telephone interview from 84 businessmen who employed one or more secretaries. These data were stratified according to type of business and size of business. Secretarial employment was stratified according to shorthand as a job requirement and to shorthand utilization of the job. A follow-up study of those students who exited the Manpower Office Training Program at Southern Utah State College, Cedar City, Utah, during the period from September l, 1974, through August 31, 1976, was conducted. Of the 49 students contacted, 48 responded to the questionnaire.

The purpose of the study was to determine the extent to which the curriculum of the Manpower Office Training Program at Southern Utah State College, Cedar City, Utah, met the needs of the students. The purpose of this study was to analyze the word processing procedures in the offices of the President and Provost at Utah State University. Seven secretaries participated in the survey by completing a questionnaire and keeping a record of all typing and nontyping tasks performed during two nonconsecutive weeks.

A combined total of 9035 lines (average 12 words per line) of typing was completed by all workers. Ninety-nine percent of the typing was classified as text in format and originated in one of several ways including: copy type, shorthand, revision, self composition, machine dictation, and longhand.
