Quality Management, Supply Chain Management, And Just In Time: A Model Of Their Impact On Business Performance, Vijay R. Kannan, K. C. Tan Jan 2002

Quality Management, Supply Chain Management, And Just In Time: A Model Of Their Impact On Business Performance, Vijay R. Kannan, K. C. Tan

Management Faculty Publications

Just in time, quality management, and supply chain management have in recent years been proposed as means of improving product quality and responsiveness, while simultaneously reducing cost. The three can also be used as complementary elements of an integrated strategy aimed at improving an organization's competitiveness. This study proposes and tests a structural equation model that examines linkages between just in time, quality management, supply chain management and supplier management, and their impact on business performance. Results show that while just in time, quality and supply chain management efforts are indeed mutually supportive, it is a firm's efforts in the …

Supplier Selection And Assessment: Their Impact On Business Performance, Vijay R. Kannan, K. C. Tan

Management Faculty Publications

Increasingly, firms are allocating more resources to their core competencies and encouraging the outsourcing of non-core activities, which increases their reliance and dependence on suppliers. This increases the importance of effective supplier selection and assessment. Sparse evidence exists regarding the impact of supplier selection and assessment on a buying firm's business performance. This research describes an empirical study of the importance of supplier selection and assessment criteria of American manufacturing companies for items to be used in products already in production. Moreover, it identifies relationships between criteria and a buying firm's business performance. Results indicate that soft, non-quantifiable selection criteria, …

An Organization's Responsibility To Provide Work-Family Programs, Susan R. Madsen Dec 2000

An Organization's Responsibility To Provide Work-Family Programs, Susan R. Madsen

Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications

Defining and deciding the responsibility of business organizations to provide and assist employees with work-family programs and initiatives is a current critical issue that has ignited controversy during the past decade. The author argues that work-family programs should be a part of every organization and should be linked to benefits to the employer. She argues that training and educating business leaders about work-family options and benefits is a better solution than continual legislation. Discussions include organizational responsibility, the increased need for these programs, work-family programs and services, benefits and suggestions for the employer, and finding a solution through shared responsibility.

Should The U.S. Federal Government Mandate Family Medical Leave Policy For Companies With 25-49 Employees?, Sonja A. Irlbeck, Susan R. Madsen, Susan Nash

Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications

Employees and employers struggle with balancing work/family responsibilities. While the U.S. Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) has been effective for some companies, it created burdens for others. The current debate whether to extend the FMLA to employees in companies with 25-49 employees has spawned U.S. studies and hearings to understand better both sides of the issue. This article reviews both sides of this critical issue, providing a history of the current act and references to international documentation and experts on the topic. The authors discuss possible amendments to the FMLA, as well as expansion of the legislation that will benefit …

Bridging Space Over Time: Global Virtual Team Dynamics And Effectiveness, Kathy Chudoba, Martha L. Maznevski Jan 2000

Bridging Space Over Time: Global Virtual Team Dynamics And Effectiveness, Kathy Chudoba, Martha L. Maznevski

Data Analytics & Information Systems Faculty Publications

Global virtual teams are internationally distributed groups of people with an organizational mandate to make or implement decisions with international components and implications. They are typically assigned tasks that are strategically important and highly complex. They rarely meet in person, conducting almost all of their interaction and decision making using communications technology. Although they play an increasingly important role in multinational organizations, little systematic is known about their dynamics or effectiveness. This study built a grounded theory of global virtual team processes and performance over time. We built a template based on Adaptive Structuration Theory (DeSanctis and Poole 1994) to …

Quality, Manufacturing Strategy, And Global Competition: An Empirical Analysis, K. C. Tan, Vijay R. Kannan, R. B. Handfield, S. Ghosh Jan 2000

Quality, Manufacturing Strategy, And Global Competition: An Empirical Analysis, K. C. Tan, Vijay R. Kannan, R. B. Handfield, S. Ghosh

Management Faculty Publications

Over the past ten years, intense global competition has forced many firms to examine their business practices and to evaluate how to meet the challenges economic globalization has presented. Underlying these efforts has been an examination of strategic priorities and in particular recognition of the need to improve product and process quality. While quality improvement has become a pervasive element of business strategy, allowing some companies to respond to increasing competitive pressures, it has not been universally effective. This study uses a survey of over 300 senior quality personnel to identify the challenges businesses face from globalization and how strategic …

Tools And Techniques Of Quality Management: An Empirical Investigation Of Their Impact On Performance, Vijay R. Kannan, Keah-Choon Tan University Of Nevada, Robert B. Handfield, Soumen Ghosh

Management Faculty Publications

An investigation of quality management at an operational rather than a strategic level is described. Using a survey of senior quality personnel, data were collected on four aspects of quality: management; quality tools; documentation; and the dimensions of quality that companies measure. Regression analysis confirms suggestions in the literature that company performance is positively affected by a culture in which quality is ingrained. Moreover, it identifies positive relationships between several widely used operational practices and company performance.
