Investing In Sustainable Urban Transport In Dublin And Its Commuting Hinterland - An Analysis Of Current Policy In The Context Of Its Review, James Nix

Masters

The thesis reviews international literature in the area of sustainable urban transport. Extensive use is made of industry reports and statistical information compiled by Irish public bodies. In turn, this data is supplemented by fieldwork, namely communication with, and study visits to meet, experts in three German cities - Bonn, Cologne and Munich - while a detailed case study is made of rail tunnelling in Madrid, with expert knowledge provided by Professor Melis, project leader of the Madrid metro expansion. Cost data from Madrid is compared with estimates for proposed underground rail lines in Dublin. Drawing on the literature and …

Couple Dynamic In Household Tourism Decision Making: Women As The Gatekeepers?, Ziene Mottiar, Deirdre Quinn Jan 2004

Couple Dynamic In Household Tourism Decision Making: Women As The Gatekeepers?, Ziene Mottiar, Deirdre Quinn

Articles

The purpose of this study is to explore household tourism decision making. There is an extensive literature on consumer choice in general. In terms of tourism, the main focus has been on motivational factors. However, as part of the emergence of a literature which studies the issues of tourism and gender, there are some authors who focus on holiday decision making. In this context the focus here is the distinctive roles and power relations within a couple. The study is exploratory in nature and employs a self-administered questionnaire. It is concluded that the overall consumption of a holiday is largely …

Smes In Tourism: An International Review, Ziene Mottiar Jan 2004

Smes In Tourism: An International Review, Ziene Mottiar

Books / Book chapters

Ireland has become known as the Celtic Tiger due to average annual GNP growth of 9 percent during the 1990s. The reasons for this growth are many and varied and tourism and tourism firms have played no small part in this rapid growth. In total the sector sustains approximately 150,000 jobs (or job equivalents) amounting to 8.6 percent of total employment (Bord Failte, 2001). In some ways the tourism sector is representative of the broader industrial profile of Ireland with a number of large international firms but the majority of firms are SMEs. Both types of firms have gained from …

Bringing The Environment In From The Cold, Thomas Power Jan 2004

Bringing The Environment In From The Cold, Thomas Power

Articles

The aim of this essay is to present an overview of some of the basic concepts underlying the mainstream approach to the role of economics in the analysis of the causes and treatment of environmental degradation. It evaluates the mainstream view depicted by Helm and Pearce and analyses economic externalities in context, conventional economic approaches and imperfect information.

Futures Thinking To Achieve Sustainable Development At Local Level In Ireland, Lorcan Sirr, Ruth Kelly, John Ratcliffe Jan 2004

Futures Thinking To Achieve Sustainable Development At Local Level In Ireland, Lorcan Sirr, Ruth Kelly, John Ratcliffe

Reports

We are living in times of unprecedented global change and upheaval and over the next ten to 20 years governments, organisations and individuals will face increasing difficulties in an environment of growing complexity, heightened uncertainty and a quickening pace of change. The concept of sustainable development implies the reconciliation of long-term socio-economic development, environmental protection and quality of life; essentially it is concerned with the future. Unfortunately, the potential for linking “futures thinking” to debates about sustainable development at local and regional government levels is relatively undeveloped, particularly in Ireland. Responding to this challenge, The Futures Academy at Technological University …

Investigations Into Availability And Quality Of Urban Tourism Consumer Behaviour Information: Tourist Information Availability And Use For Dublin's Tourism Stakeholder Organisations, David M.J. Nunan Jan 2004

Investigations Into Availability And Quality Of Urban Tourism Consumer Behaviour Information: Tourist Information Availability And Use For Dublin's Tourism Stakeholder Organisations, David M.J. Nunan

Masters

The availability of timely urban tourist information is increasingly important for useful learning experiences among all tourism stakeholders. National or regional tourism visitor surveys are usually either too general to be of much use, if any, to the individual city tourism stakeholder or too specific to be of much use to the city destination manager. A homogeneous city survey model has recently been made available for European city tourism organisations. A balance needs to be struck between the homogeneous information needs of the city tourism manager and the more specific needs of the individual local urban tourism sectors. This thesis …

You Say You Want A Revolution:Music In Advertising And Pseudo-Counterculture, Alan Bradshaw, Roger Sherlock, Pierre Mcdonagh Jan 2004

You Say You Want A Revolution:Music In Advertising And Pseudo-Counterculture, Alan Bradshaw, Roger Sherlock, Pierre Mcdonagh

Conference papers

Using the example of the song Revolution by the Beatles and its use in a TV ad for Nike, this paper explores the conference theme of the impact of marketing and marketing systems in society from the subtheme of art and aesthetics in markets. We consider the role of music in advertisements as the appropriation and negation of counterculture against Adorno & Horkheimer’s critique of the commodification form of the music itself independent of appropriation. The paper considers these research problematics from the perspective of the musicians themselves.

Organizational Forming In Amodern Times: Reinserting The Dynamic Into The Organizational, Paul Donnelly Jan 2004

Organizational Forming In Amodern Times: Reinserting The Dynamic Into The Organizational, Paul Donnelly

Conference papers

While there is an obvious concern that “new organizational forms” are appearing, and despite the topic receiving increased attention, scholars, as yet, have been unable to theorize, grasp or account for these new forms adequately. In continuing to look for the ‘new’ with ‘old’ lenses, we are seeing neither real departure from Weberian conceptualizations other than oppositional approaches still in search of an essential entity, nor much consideration given to the possibility that the paradigmatic approach to form is also part of the problem. In light of this, I posit that thinking within a modernist epistemological framework has served to …

At A Distance: Learning About Cross-Cultural Virtual Teams In An International Management Course, Mikael Søndergaard, Marta Calás, Paul Donnelly Jan 2004

At A Distance: Learning About Cross-Cultural Virtual Teams In An International Management Course, Mikael Søndergaard, Marta Calás, Paul Donnelly

Books/Book Chapters

This chapter narrates our experiences designing and teaching an international management course which was technologically enhanced to include cross-cultural interactions between the US and Denmark. Our rationale, that issues regarding globalization have accelerated the need to bring together through virtual means people from different cultures to engage in collaborative performance at a distance, was addressed in the context of theoretical concerns regarding cultural differences. We discuss the theoretical premises on which we based the course, illustrate the three core distance activities that we designed for these purposes, evaluate the general outcome in light of our objectives, and assess their value …

An Exploratory Study Of How Decisions Are Made In The Yield Management Environment Of Four Star Dublin Hotels, Tony Kiely Jan 2004

An Exploratory Study Of How Decisions Are Made In The Yield Management Environment Of Four Star Dublin Hotels, Tony Kiely

Other resources

Yield management in the hotel industry has been described as a method of profitably managing fixed capacity. A critical element of yield management is the decision strategy employed as this determines the degree to which optimum solutions are generated. Recent research has indicated that the use of technology assisted decision optimising models (the management science model) would greatly improve the optimisation of decisions by minimising the need to employ guesswork in achieving optimum solutions. Despite this assurance, yield management remains couched in uncertainty through being inextricably associated with forecasting future demand for a perishable product in an increasingly competitive environment. …

All Party Oireachtas Committee On The Constitution Ninth Progress Report, Tom Dunne Jan 2004

All Party Oireachtas Committee On The Constitution Ninth Progress Report, Tom Dunne

Reports

Ireland, like many other countries with high rates of economic growth, is urbanising rapidly. There has been considerable emphasis on planning for this through the National Development Plan, the National Spatial Strategy, development guidelines and other measures. Through these the state intends that a proper planning process will lead growth rather than leaving it to market forces to drive development in what are regarded as undesirable directions. The latter it is feared will lead to unsuitable social, economic or physical outcomes. Unintended results have flowed from the implementation, or flawed implementation of many of these policies and have given rise …

Firm Growth As A Research Issue, Thomas Cooney, Pasi Malinen Jan 2004

Firm Growth As A Research Issue, Thomas Cooney, Pasi Malinen

Articles

A key issue of debate regarding small firms over the past two decades has focused on the ability of small firms to engender growth, particularly fast-growth firms. Many commentators believe that it is a minimal group of enterprises germinating rapidly that provide the real jobs and therefore, that it is these firms which policy makers should be converging upon. But how can small businesses be transformed into fast-growth firms? As Tuck and Hamilton (1993) noted, despite the magnitude of research on small firms, especially regarding growth, researchers are still uncertain why some firms grow and others do not when originating …

Best Practice Hrd: Exploring The Feasibility Of Conventional Models In The Small Firm: The Case Of The Irish Hotel Sector, Ciara Nolan Jan 2004

Best Practice Hrd: Exploring The Feasibility Of Conventional Models In The Small Firm: The Case Of The Irish Hotel Sector, Ciara Nolan

Masters

The growth and popularisation of best practice HRD literature has been a key feature of recent international management research. This study explores this concept within the context of the small firm. In particular, the work sought to analyse the feasibility of conventional best practice HRD, theoretically and empirically, within a small hotel environment. Conventional best practice theory advocates that HRD takes place within a structured framework of formal plans and procedures. It explicitly overlooks and ignores informal and tacit means of training, which have proven to be particularly crucial within small hospitality firms. Yet, many small firms are successful and …

L'Impatto Delle Tecnologie Informative E Della Comunicazione (Ict) Sui Fabbisogni Formativi Delle Imprese Fornitrici Di Servizi Logistici In Italia E In Irlanda, P Evangelista, Edward Sweeney, Francesco Andreottola

Conference papers
