Those With The Most Find It Hardest To Share: Exploring Leader Resistance To The Implementation Of Team-Based Empowerment, Greg L. Stewart, Stacy L. Astrove, Cody J. Reeves, Eean R. Crawford, Samantha L. Solimeo Dec 2017

Those With The Most Find It Hardest To Share: Exploring Leader Resistance To The Implementation Of Team-Based Empowerment, Greg L. Stewart, Stacy L. Astrove, Cody J. Reeves, Eean R. Crawford, Samantha L. Solimeo

2017 Faculty Bibliography

We use a convergent parallel mixed methods approach to explore barriers to the successful implementation of a team-based empowerment initiative within the Veterans Health Administration. Although previous research has suggested that leaders often actively obstruct empowerment initiatives, little is known about the reasons behind and effects of such hindering. Using a longitudinal quasi-experimental design, we support a hypothesis that higher-status physician leaders are less successful than lower-status nonphysician leaders in implementing team-based empowerment. In parallel, we analyze qualitative data obtained through interviews conducted during early months of the teambased empowerment initiative to identify common themes for why and how leaders …

Comparative Content Analysis Regarding Brand Management Through Influencer Marketing, Julia Hurt

Masters Essays

The divide between advertising, marketing, and public relations has deteriorated over time, where each has a specific focus but no longer a particular correct way of reaching audiences. With the ever-growing presence of online social influencers, a new marketing practice known as influencer marketing has evolved, where brands connect with consumers in an authentic and meaningful way. Influencer marketing is a form of marketing that identifies and targets individuals through the influence of bloggers and their active voice. Research indicates how influence plays a role through social media to reach consumers. However, there is a gap in research when it …

Collaborative Leadership In Medicine, Mary Waters

Celebration of Scholarship 2012-2017

I interviewed five leaders in the field of medicine, all physicians in leadership positions, and analyzed their leadership styles. Additionally, I researched collaborative leadership and its role in the ever changing world of healthcare. I have found that physicians in respected leadership roles tend to be team members who are very willing to acknowledge their flaws but also be aware of strengths and use them for the good of patients and the community

Can Investors Benefit From Using Morningstar's Stewardship Grades?, Scott B. Moore, Gary E. Porter

2017 Faculty Bibliography

Interest in governance led Morningstar to develop a summary measure for mutual fund governance. In contrast to previous work in this area, we focus on whether and how individual investors can use the Stewardship Grade Overall to improve mutual fund selection. We find that regardless of fee structure, top overall governance grade funds impose lower costs on investors regardless of fund investment style. We also find some evidence that choosing funds with the highest stewardship grade may earn positive risk adjusted returns. Stewardship Grade overall may therefore help less sophisticated investors identify better-performing mutual funds.

Audit Fee Discounting In The Post-Sox Environment, Albert Nagy, Benjamin W. Hoffman Jan 2017

Audit Fee Discounting In The Post-Sox Environment, Albert Nagy, Benjamin W. Hoffman

2017 Faculty Bibliography

Purpose – This paper aims to investigate whether the expected implementation of Section 404(b) of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX 404(b)) (the integrated audit requirement) caused auditors to discount their audit fees for non-accelerated filers in anticipation of expected increased future economic rents (DeAngelo, 1981) from those clients.

Design/methodology/approach – This paper predicts that auditors charged their non-accelerated filer clients lower audit fees during the years 2005-2007 (in anticipation of increased expected future economic rents from the implementation of the SOX 404(b) requirement) compared with the years 2010- 2012 (when it had been determined that non-accelerated filers were permanently exempt from …

The Median Employee To Ceo Pay Ratio Disclosure Requirement, Robert Bloom Jan 2017

The Median Employee To Ceo Pay Ratio Disclosure Requirement, Robert Bloom

2017 Faculty Bibliography

In recent years, especially in national political campaigns, there has been much discussion about who is in the top 1% of American wealth, how they landed in this category, and what special income tax provisions perpetuate their status. As a reaction to this debate in this category, the Dodd Frank Act and the Consumer Protection Act of 2010 have mandated disclosure by publicly registered companies to disclose the median employee to CEO pay ratio. The Securities and Exchange Commission has issued specific guidance on this requirement. That is the subject of this article.

Catholic Social Teaching As An Explanation Of Firm’S Environmental Impact: Evidence From Heavy Manufacturing Sector, Anne Hetson Apr 2016

Catholic Social Teaching As An Explanation Of Firm’S Environmental Impact: Evidence From Heavy Manufacturing Sector, Anne Hetson

Senior Honors Projects

Catholic Social Teaching theory is examined to identify business variables consistent with Papal Encyclicals. We identified top compensation (pay disparity), stock options (employee autonomy), and number of employees (primacy of labor over capital) as factors that are consistent with Catholic Social Teaching. We then used the “CSR Hub” environmental scores of manufacturing firms. We chose to look at manufacturing companies because of their potential for environmental impact. We find that firms that are consistent with Catholic Social Teaching have stronger environmental practices. Specifically, our research suggests that the greater the investment in labor, measured by cost of goods sold per …

Communication Apprehension Affects Performance, Andrew C. Petry Apr 2016

Communication Apprehension Affects Performance, Andrew C. Petry

Masters Essays

The research outlined in this work is founded on the notion that every individual is affected by a degree of Communication Apprehension (CA), and the level of apprehension individuals experience has the potential to either positively or negatively influence their ability to perform in the workplace. Specifically, this research examines the relationships between the constructs of communication apprehension, performance anxiety, organizational role, and employee performance. The results found that individuals in sales-related professional roles have a significantly lower level of overall CA than the general population; individuals in customer-facing roles displayed no difference in CA level based on sex, organizational …

The Successes And Shortfalls Of The Sarbanes-Oxley Act Of 2002, Brad Hopkins Apr 2016

The Successes And Shortfalls Of The Sarbanes-Oxley Act Of 2002, Brad Hopkins

Senior Honors Projects

The collapse of Enron and its auditor, Arthur Andersen, in 2001 marked the greatest financial scare since the Great Depression. Enron, along with several other scandals, such as WorldCom and Waste Management, sent a financial shockwave throughout the United States. As a result, the public was no longer confident in the United States’ financial markets and the work being done by independent auditors. In order to satisfy the public and ensure that a case, such as Enron, would not happen again, Congress proposed and passed the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002. This paper presents an analysis of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of …

“Build A School, Rebuild A City” An Economic Examination Of The Re-Structured Education System In New Orleans, 10 Years After Hurricane Katrina, Brianna Lazarchik

Senior Honors Projects

The city could have died. But it didn’t. Though the damage to the city of New Orleans in 2005 was devastating in ways that shocked the nation ten years ago, its culture and people are alive and thriving today. The depth of passion in New Orleans motivated and inspired individuals to move back to the city quickly and restore its glory. However, such rapid restoration is not without vast socioeconomic challenges. Education is a vital component of any thriving social system, and the education system in New Orleans has rebuilt itself in a unique way: largely through charter schools. This …

The Effects Of Tarp On Fair Value Accounting, Christopher N. Mitschow Apr 2015

The Effects Of Tarp On Fair Value Accounting, Christopher N. Mitschow

Senior Honors Projects

In the aftermath of the financial crisis of 2008, fair value accounting in banks has come under a great deal of criticism by some who believed bank managers were intentionally reclassifying assets to prevent write-downs, or who believed that banks were taking risks with fair value assets and liabilities that caused their distressed states. We analyzed banks’ use of fair value accounting by using the SEC’s EDGAR database to read and analyze the financial statements of public banks which received Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) funds and have since repaid them. We looked to see if banks classified more assets …

An Impact Analysis Of Increased Hydrokinetic Electricity Generation In The United States, Joseph Mchugh Apr 2015

An Impact Analysis Of Increased Hydrokinetic Electricity Generation In The United States, Joseph Mchugh

Senior Honors Projects

The United States relies mainly on fossil fuels to meet its energy demand, but it is beginning to look into renewable energy alternatives. One such alternative is hydrokinetic technology, which captures the kinetic energy found in waves, tides and currents. Although initially hampered by regulatory uncertainty and low government backing, hydrokinetic technology is now gaining traction within the United States. Improved regulations and government laws are promoting research and development in the field, which will lead to more projects. This paper performs an impact analysis of an increased number of hydrokinetic energy projects as a result of reduced regulatory uncertainty …

Empirically Analyzing The “Five Percent Rule Of Materiality” In Financial Reporting Decisions, Adam Morgan Apr 2014

Empirically Analyzing The “Five Percent Rule Of Materiality” In Financial Reporting Decisions, Adam Morgan

Senior Honors Projects

This study analyzes a sample of financial restatements from 2011 and 2012 as a way to assess a proposed “five percent rule of materiality” for financial reporting decisions. Such a rule claims the average investor is only influenced by income restatements greater than five percent. Market reactions are observed through stock price, volume, and bid-ask spread following the restatement in the Form 10-K/A. The study finds only some firms restating net income by more than five percent experience statistically significant reactions in two of these metrics. The study also suggests percent change in net income is a significant driver of …

A Comparative Analysis Of The Rationality Of Consensus Forecasts Of U. S. Economic Indicators, David C. Schirm Oct 2003

A Comparative Analysis Of The Rationality Of Consensus Forecasts Of U. S. Economic Indicators, David C. Schirm

Economics & Finance

The purpose of this article is to investigate the rationality of two survey forecasts of selective U. S. macroeconomic performance measures that were widely followed in the financial markets during the 1990-2000 period. The research compares the rationality of survey forecast data from Money Market Services, Inc., and Thomson Financial. This article extends prior research that has evaluated the rationality of Money Market Services data for earlier time periods while also evaluating similar consensus forecast data from Thomson Financial that were widely reported in both Barron's and the Wall Street Journal during the 1990s.

Is The “Dominant Firm” Dominant? An Empirical Analysis Of At&T’S Market Power, Simran K. Kahai, David L. Kaserman, John W. Mayo

Economics & Finance

In this article, we estimate the degree of market power held by AT&T in the interstate long-distance market in the postdivestiture period. Our approach makes use of the dominant firm/competitive fringe model to impose the structure needed both to obtain estimates of the relevant structural parameters and to translate these parameters into an estimate of AT&T's residual demand elasticity and associated Lerner index. Because of the continued presence of regulation and other considerations, however, a direct estimation of the residual demand elasticity is not feasible. Consequently, we take a more indirect approach that combines estimation of the elasticity of fringe …

Common Stock Price Effects Of Security Issues Conditioned By Current Earnings And Dividend Announcements, Timothy A. Manuel, Leroy D. Brooks, Frederick P. Schadler Jan 1993

Common Stock Price Effects Of Security Issues Conditioned By Current Earnings And Dividend Announcements, Timothy A. Manuel, Leroy D. Brooks, Frederick P. Schadler

Economics & Finance

The valuation effect of debt and equity issue announcements on stock price varies predictably with the timing of earnings and dividend reports. Issue announcements closely preceding current cash flow signals have more negative valuation effects. Straight debt announcements also have a significantly negative effect on stock price when the offer announcement closely precedes earnings and dividend releases. The evidence is consistent with a separating equilibrium where better performing firms signal superior value by announcing equity offers shortly after dividend announcements. Poorer performers appear to time equity offers just before dividend signals, which in turn are more likely to be negative.
