Perceptions And Use Of Anonymous Communication Across Cultures, Guido Lang, Tamilla Mavlanova
Perceptions And Use Of Anonymous Communication Across Cultures, Guido Lang, Tamilla Mavlanova
Journal of International Technology and Information Management
We use social networks to communicate, keep in touch and express our opinions in a manner that has become completely ubiquitous. However, this very ubiquity and ease of expression have exposed another, contentious side – one where nobody can remain completely anonymous for long and where every conversation is stored in perpetuity. Some fear that the ephemeral quality of a social interaction has been lost, which threatens our right to be forgotten and freedom of expression. In this paper, we look at why people engage in anonymous communication, and if there is a perceived need for legal protection of anonymous …
Validating The Technostress Instrument Using A Sample Of Chinese Knowledge Workers, Leida Chen
Validating The Technostress Instrument Using A Sample Of Chinese Knowledge Workers, Leida Chen
Journal of International Technology and Information Management
Today, the phenomenon of technostress is both pervasive and global. Nevertheless, research efforts, especially empirical and cross culture studies, in this domain have been very limited. In addition, lack of consistency in the technostress measure found in existing literature made it difficult to build a unified body of knowledge of technostress. Using a sample of 221 Chinese knowledge workers, this study cross-validated and refined the technostress measure developed by Tarafdar et al. (2007). It was found that the instrument offered high validity and reliability after some respecification in the Chinese context. Technostress experienced by Chinese knowledge workers was investigated and …

Do National Culture And Organizational Development Affect The Effectiveness Of Erp Implementation? A Tale Of Two Cultures: Us Versus China, Wing M. Fok, Lillian Y. Fok, Jing Li
Do National Culture And Organizational Development Affect The Effectiveness Of Erp Implementation? A Tale Of Two Cultures: Us Versus China, Wing M. Fok, Lillian Y. Fok, Jing Li
Journal of International Technology and Information Management
As many US and European companies have implemented Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) Systems, most of the previous implementation studies have tended to focus on companies from more developed countries. This research points out that there is need for academics and practitioners to “take stock,” to examine what is happening in broad terms across organizations in the ERP implementation process, and to consider whether cultural differences in the U.S. when compared to another culture can impact the process. In this study, we are concerned with several issues surrounding current ERP implementation status and report initial findings from managers in a wide …

Optimizing Data Management With Disparities In Data Value, G. Shankaranarayanan, Adir Even, Paul D. Berger
Optimizing Data Management With Disparities In Data Value, G. Shankaranarayanan, Adir Even, Paul D. Berger
Journal of International Technology and Information Management
When there is a disparity in the value of different data records and fields, there is a need for an optimization of data resources. Not all data necessarily contribute the same value. It depends on the usage of the data, as well as a variety of other factors. This paper presents models for optimizing data management in the presence of a disparity between the values contributed by different data. We expound on what disparity of data value represents and illustrate models to derive a numerical measure of such disparity. We then use real-world data from a large data resource used …
Effects Of Exchange Benefits, Security Concerns And Situational Privacy Concerns On Mobile Commerce Adoption, Hua Dai, Yan Chen
Effects Of Exchange Benefits, Security Concerns And Situational Privacy Concerns On Mobile Commerce Adoption, Hua Dai, Yan Chen
Journal of International Technology and Information Management
Few empirical studies have examined both privacy and security concerns in the context of mobile commerce (m-commerce) while accounting for the effects of situational privacy concerns specific to the context of m-commerce. This research fills this gap in research by exploring users’ exchange perceptions specific to the context of m-commerce in China and by examining the inhibitors and drives of m-commerce adoption in China from the perspectives of social exchange. Particularly, this research develops an integrated research model in which users’ perceptions on value added of and usefulness of m-commerce, and users’ privacy concerns and security concerns of m- commerce …
The Innovation Value Chain And Adaptability Of Organizations, Jakobus Smit
The Innovation Value Chain And Adaptability Of Organizations, Jakobus Smit
Journal of International Technology and Information Management
This paper reports on a study of adaptability of organizations and how that relates to their ability to generate innovations. Constructs from an organizational culture model and the innovation value chain was used as the foundation for a cross-sectional study in 7 organizations in Ireland. The findings reveal that adaptability is indeed related to innovativeness. Organizations that are good at creating change, learning, and creativity are better able to generate new ideas. In addition organizations that are also flexible can convert these ideas into outputs and subsequently disseminate them internally as well as outside the organization.

As the mobile device market grows, so grows the commercial market and therefore the subsequent development of applications for this medium. As this rush to develop apps continues to grow, the search continues for what characteristics will help mobile apps be adopted and continued to be used. This exploratory study looks to see if there are differences between how users of mobile applications and developers of mobile applications perceive these characteristics. The results of our study identified areas of statistically significant differences on key design characteristics between mobile application designers with mobile applications users. More interestingly, a detailed analysis found …
Long Term Factors Of Internet Diffusion In Sub-Saharan Africa: A Panel Co- Integration Analysis, Vasudeva N. R. Murthy, Ravi Nath, Mina Soleimani
Long Term Factors Of Internet Diffusion In Sub-Saharan Africa: A Panel Co- Integration Analysis, Vasudeva N. R. Murthy, Ravi Nath, Mina Soleimani
Journal of International Technology and Information Management
Identifying factors that influence the diffusion of the Internet is paramount for researchers as well as policy makers in articulating strategies to improve the availability and subsequent use of the Internet. Most existing empirical studies have focused on this problem by analyzing diffusion data for countries for one fixed year and identified variables affecting the Internet diffusion. These variables, generally, come from the economic, technological, policy, culture, and human capital realms. These results have provided a good “snapshot” of what factors are important towards the diffusion of the Internet and the results tend to vary for studies conducted in different …

How Polymorphic Warnings Reduce Habituation In The Brain—Insights From An Fmri Study, Bonnie Brinton Anderson, C. Brock Kirwan, Jeffrey L. Jenkins, David Eargle, Seth Howard, Anthony Vance
Faculty Publications
Research on security warnings consistently points to habituation as a key reason why users ignore security warnings. However, because habituation as a mental state is difficult to observe, previous research has examined habituation indirectly by observing its influence on security behaviors. This study addresses this gap by using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to open the “black box” of the brain to observe habituation as it develops in response to security warnings. Our results show a dramatic drop in the visual processing centers of the brain after only the second exposure to a warning, with further decreases with subsequent exposures. …

Deception Is In The Eye Of The Communicator: Investigating Pupil Diameter Variations In Automated Deception Detection Interviews, Jeffrey G. Proudfoot, Jeffrey L. Jenkins, Judee K. Burgoon, Jay F. Nunamaker Jr.
Faculty Publications
Deception is pervasive, often leading to adverse consequences for individuals, organizations, and society. Information systems researchers are developing tools and evaluating sensors that can be used to augment human deception judgments. One sensor exhibiting particular promise is the eye tracker. Prior work evaluating eye trackers for deception detection has focused on the detection and interpretation of brief eye behavior variations in response to stimuli (e.g., images) or interview questions. However, research is needed to understand how eye behaviors evolve over the course of an interaction with a deception detection system. Using latent growth curve modeling, we test how pupil diameter …

The purpose of this study is to explore the collaborative advantages and relational outcomes that organizations obtain from having strong collaborative relationships. With business competing as supply chains of multiple relationships, the reliance on inter-firm relationships has increased and become central strategy for organizations. Logistics computing technologies in the cloud may facilitate collaboration in the supply chain, although there are conflicting viewpoints regarding cloud viability. This study also evaluates the effect that cloud computing technology has on collaborative advantage and relational outcomes in small and large organizations. The model developed here is based on a cross-disciplinary theoretical perspective, which combines …
Roles Of Information Technology In Supply Chain Management, Akhadian S. Harnowo
Roles Of Information Technology In Supply Chain Management, Akhadian S. Harnowo
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Supply Chain Information Technology (SCIT) is a key enabler of effective supply chain management (SCM) activities. In 2013, $300 billion was spent on SCIT by firms globally, an increase by 1.8% and 3.8% compared to 2012 and 2011, respectively. With such significant investments, firms face risks of eroded financial performance if SCIT does not perform as expected. In fact, there is a mix of evidence with some firms benefiting from SCIT while others failing to benefit from investing in SCIT. Despite substantial research relating to utilizing information technology in a SCM context, the impact of SCIT on firm performance remains …

Using Trust And Anonymity To Expand The Use Of Anonymizing Systems That Improve Security Across Organizations, Anthony Vance, Paul Benjamin Lowry, David W. Wilson
Faculty Publications
To mitigate risks inherent in sharing sensitive cyber-security information, recent research has examined anonymizing systems (ANS) that hide the identities of participants and decouple data from their originators. ANS are particularly compelling as a potential support to cyber-security information sharing because the cost of implementation is relatively low, and the more organizations and nations that participate, the more everyone benefits. Although such systems are promising to both developing and mature cyber-infrastructures, they still have not been widely adopted for use in sharing cyber-security information. Relatively little prior research has investigated the perception and adoption of these systems, despite their potential …

Organizations are increasingly using virtual teams to gain competitive advantages in the marketplace, but managers face a tradeoff between the benefits that such virtual teams provide and their inherent weaknesses. This paper examines identity communication in virtual environments, arguing that identity communication can counteract some of the negative aspects of virtual teamwork. Using coded transcriptions from 35 semi-structured interviews with working professionals who participate in virtual teams, we explore the process of identity communication in virtual teams and the role of technology in influencing and enabling these processes. Using established identity and media theories as a guide, we formulate, and …

Organizational teams are the primary mechanism by which ideas are birthed and recombined into innovations for maintaining or achieving competitive advantage. We know that resources of people, time and funding impact team effectiveness in innovating. We also know that factors such as individual traits of talent, expertise, and collaboration skills also matter greatly. What is less known, and less studied, is the role of team characteristics, in particular, team play and team playfulness on innovation results. Our two-part study examined 145 teams and discovered that team playfulness is present on all successful innovation teams and emerges as divergence and deep …

have made extensive use of interbank netting systems, in which payments are accumulated for end-of-day settlement. This approach, known as deferred net settlement (DNS), reduces the liquidity needs of a payment system, but bears inherent operational risks. As large dollar volumes of retail payments accumulate swiftly, real-time gross settlement (RTGS) is an attractive option. It permits immediate settlement of transactions during the day, but it brings up other risks that require consideration. We propose a hybrid payment management system involving elements of both DNS and RTGS. We explore several hybrid system mechanism designs to allow payment prioritization, reduce payment delays, …

Cable TV return path data made possible by current generation set-top boxes present a new opportunity to analyze household viewing behavior and recover household viewing preferences from it. This research develops a model of household viewing preference that supports quantifying a household's valuation for different categories of digital content within the constraints of the programs to which it subscribes. This study uses a data set of more than 1 million observations on households from a digital entertainment firm that offers basic and premium services. Our estimation is via a Bayesian hierarchical model that employs the Gibbs sampler. The results show …
