A New Construct Of Is Performance Measurement: Consonance Approach, Michael Weldon Boyd Jul 2001

A New Construct Of Is Performance Measurement: Consonance Approach, Michael Weldon Boyd

Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this research is to create a subjective measurement system that can assist in the successful creation of new information systems (IS). That entails moving from the commonly used objective measures of success (time and money constraints) to subjective measures (people's perceptions). Literature in the social perception area and goal congruence area has provided a basis for changing the measurement of success. Due to major differences in how people react to stimuli and perceived outcomes the objective measures must evolve to include subjective observations.

This research uses a questionnaire to gather data about the perceptions of the stakeholders …

E-Docspros : Exploring Texpros Into E-Business Era, Zhenfu Cheng

Dissertations

Document processing is a critical element of office automation. TEXPROS (TEXt PROcessing System) is a knowledge-based system designed to manage personal documents. However, as the Internet and e-Business changed the way offices operate, there is a need to re-envision document processing, storage, retrieval, and sharing. In the current environment, people must be able to access documents remotely and to share those documents with others. e-DOCPROS (e-DOCument PROcessing System) is a new document processing system that takes advantage of many of TEXPROS's structures but adapts the system to this new environment. The new system is built to serve e-businesses, takes advantage …

Waqs : A Web-Based Approximate Query System, George Jyh-Shian Chang May 2001

Waqs : A Web-Based Approximate Query System, George Jyh-Shian Chang

Dissertations

The Web is often viewed as a gigantic database holding vast stores of information and provides ubiquitous accessibility to end-users. Since its inception, the Internet has experienced explosive growth both in the number of users and the amount of content available on it. However, searching for information on the Web has become increasingly difficult. Although query languages have long been part of database management systems, the standard query language being the Structural Query Language is not suitable for the Web content retrieval.

In this dissertation, a new technique for document retrieval on the Web is presented. This technique is designed …

Augmenting Applications With Hyper Media, Functionality And Meta-Information, Roberto Galnares May 2001

Augmenting Applications With Hyper Media, Functionality And Meta-Information, Roberto Galnares

Dissertations

The Dynamic Hypermedia Engine (DHE) enhances analytical applications by adding relationships, semantics and other metadata to the application's output and user interface. DHE also provides additional hypermedia navigational, structural and annotation functionality. These features allow application developers and users to add guided tours, personal links and sharable annotations, among other features, into applications. DHE runs as a middleware between the application user interface and its business logic and processes, in a n-tier architecture, supporting the extra functionalities without altering the original systems by means of application wrappers.

DHE automatically generates links at run-time for each of those elements having relationships …

Knowledge-Based Document Retrieval With Application To Texpros, Fang Sheng May 2001

Knowledge-Based Document Retrieval With Application To Texpros, Fang Sheng

Dissertations

Document retrieval in an information system is most often accomplished through keyword search. The common technique behind keyword search is indexing. The major drawback of such a search technique is its lack of effectiveness and accuracy. It is very common in a typical keyword search over the Internet to identify hundreds or even thousands of records as the potentially desired records. However, often few of them are relevant to users' interests.

This dissertation presents knowledge-based document retrieval architecture with application to TEXPROS. The architecture is based on a dual document model that consists of a document type hierarchy and, a …

An E-Commerce Systems Integration Framework, Ernest A. Capozzoli, Sheb L. True Apr 2001

An E-Commerce Systems Integration Framework, Ernest A. Capozzoli, Sheb L. True

Faculty and Research Publications

The success of e-commerce activity is directly affected by system integration efforts associated with traditional back office and web-based systems. The potential benefits of enterprise-wide e-commerce activities to an organization emphasize the need for system integration beyond individual sales transactions. Unfortunately, many organizations are not capitalizing on the synergistic advantages of integrated systems. Despite the apparent lack of integration, some organizations are attempting to coordinate such customer activities. Planning for and integrating e-commerce technologies are essential to an organization's survival.

Knowledge Management In The Cost Analysis Knowledge Domain: Generating, Organizing, And Developing Knowledge For Crosschecking Cost Estimates, Ryan J. Rueve

Theses and Dissertations

Two problems the Aeronautical Systems Center's Acquisition Cost Division (ASC/FMC) is encountering with its Life Cycle Cost/Lean Process Initiative (LCC/LPI) efforts are (Marshall and Seibel. 2000): (1) a high proportion of inexperienced to experienced cost analysts which makes access to valuable expertise limited, and (2) knowledge loss due to turnover of experienced cost analysts. To address these problems, this thesis presents a four-step tailored methodology to identity tasks or processes important to the functioning of an organization, capture knowledge from experts pertaining to those tasks (generate content), convert that knowledge into a flowchart (organize content), and have experts critique the …

The Influence Of Framing Effects On Perceived Ease Of Use, Perceived Usefulness, And Behavioral Intention In Information Technology Systems, Jon C. Autrey

Theses and Dissertations

Every year the Department of Defense spends millions of dollars on the purchase of new computer equipment. There is some question as to the necessity of the amount of this spending. This thesis looks at the use of information framing to influence users' perceptions of information technology using the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). TAM does this hy measuring users' perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, and behavioral intention toward a computer. An experiment was conducted by framing information about the technology level of two computers. Users' perceptions about using those systems were then collected using the TAM construct measuring instruments. …

An Evaluation Of Information Technology (It) Outsourcing Determinants Within The Department Of Defense (Dod), Alexander J. Barelka

Theses and Dissertations

Each year the Department of Defense (DoD) spends billions of dollars on information technology (IT) outsourcing. However, little formal or academic guidance has appeared that explains how, why, or even when this occurs. This study presents and evaluates several determinants that may impact a decision to outsource information technology systems in the Department of Defense. It begins with the development of a conceptual model, which was created using semi-structured interviews and an extensive literature search. This model was then matured into an analytic version by using the Delphi method, which is an accepted methodology to use when insufficient or no …

A Note On The Paper “Resource-Constrained Project Scheduling: Notation, Classification, Models And Methods” By Brucker Et Al., Willy Herroelen, Erik Demeulemeester, Bert De Reyck Feb 2001

A Note On The Paper “Resource-Constrained Project Scheduling: Notation, Classification, Models And Methods” By Brucker Et Al., Willy Herroelen, Erik Demeulemeester, Bert De Reyck

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The great variety of project scheduling problems studied in the ever growing literature motivated the recent development of classification schemes. In a recent paper (European Journal of Operational Research 112 (1999) 3–41), Brucker et al. make the claim that, so far, no classification scheme exists which is compatible with what is commonly accepted in machine scheduling and introduce a new classification. In this note, we critically review major shortcomings of the suggested scheme which place heavy limitations on its potential use.

A More Efficient Document Retrieval Method For Texpros, Yin Dong Jan 2001

A More Efficient Document Retrieval Method For Texpros, Yin Dong

Dissertations

Document processing is a critical element of office automation. Through document classification, extraction and filing, documents are automatically placed into a knowledge base according to certain rules. Document retrieval is a process to get a document back according to a user's requirements and to show the results to the user. Hence, a good user-interface and an efficient retrieval algorithm become core parts of document retrieval.

Unlike previous browsers that have been proposed for this purpose, this dissertation develops a new browser that has a user interface with more tools, and one that has a more efficient retrieval algorithm that can …
