Department of Fisheries Annual Reports

In accordance with Section 62 of the Financial Administration and Audit Act 1985, I submit for your information and presentation to Parliament the Annual Report of the Fisheries Department for the financial year ending 30 June 1990.

The Annual Report has been prepared in accordance with the provisions of the Financial Administration and Audit Act 1985.

Section 57 of the Fisheries Act 1905 requires me to report to you as to the state of the fisheries of the State and for such report to be laid before both Houses of Parliament.

This report includes figures for catch, boiled, frozen and live lobster, lobster tails, bi-products. As well as currency exchange rates and beach price for that year. Catch figures have been supplied by Fisheries Research Division, WA Marine Research Laboratories, Fisheries Department of Western Australia. Production figures have been taken from Commonwealth Department of Primary Industry, Monthly Production Summary figures. Some variation of +/-2% may occur between the cumulative monthly figures and the season production totals supplied.

The Western Australian beef industry is poised to expand production in response to improved export opportunities in Japan, South Korea and Taiwan.

There are a number of beef processors and exporters with substantial experience in exporting beef to international markets. These companies can supply a wide range of beef products.

Most beef produced in Western Australia is grass-fed. However, grain-finished beef is produced at certain times of the year.

The beef industry has been in a period of contraction since the "beef price crash" of the mid 1970s. As a result it has come to focus more on domestic market …

This report contains passport (including collection site) data and Commonwealth Plant Introduction (CPI) numbers for all wild and semi-domesticated Lupinus accessions introduced into Australia to 1990 (a total of 1071 accessions with CPI numbers between 10650 and 122692). Scientists or plant breeders with an interest in the characteristics of wild lupins from certain natural environments, such as high soil pH or low rainfall, will find this information invaluable when they select accessions for their experiments. The majority of the accessions were introduced by Western Australian scientists following collecting missions in the Mediterranean region, and the remainder were donated from institutions …

Pink snapper, Chrysophrysauratus (Sparidae) is one of the major commercial and recreational fish in Western Australian inshore waters. This report presents a number of equations and conversion factors for management and scientific study of the species. Equations to calculate total lengths from partial lengths will facilitate enforcement of minimum legal lengths when snapper are landed in a "head-off" condition. For fisheries science purposes, there are equations to convert among total length, standard length and length to caudal fork; and to convert lengths and weights of processed fish to whole lengths and weights. It is generally acknowledged that more competitive marketing of Australian fisheries and aquaculture harvests requires closer attention to post-harvest technology. Historically, these products have been marketed in a variety of forms (e.g., for freshwater crayfish:- boiled fresh, boiled frozen, whole or tails, and live). Some of these forms present a product of actual, or perceived, poorer quality to the retailer and consumer and, thereby, obtain low prices.

Freshwater crayfish can survive out of water for extended periods and, so, can be economically transported alive to the (overseas) restaurant chef. This live product commands the very highest price for the grower. …

Sales by U.S. "furniture and home furnishings" stores were nearly $75 billion in 1987, the year of the most recent Census of Retail Trade. The sales total includes $26 billion for "furniture" stores, $16 billion for "homefurnishings" stores, $8 billion for "household appliance" stores, and $24 billion for "radio, television, computer, and music" stores.

The 1987 Census of Retail Trade reports sales for the combined category, furniture and home furnishings, for all U.S. states, counties, and metropolitan areas. In this article, therefore, the term "furniture and home furnishings" refers to combined sales for all of the store types in Table …

This report presents information on the probable original introduction of the eastern Australian yabbie to farm dams in the Wheat-belt Region of the southwest of Western Australia (in 1932 at Narembeen); the probable type of yabbie (the "White Yabby", Cherax albidus Clark 1936 ) and source (Miram Swamp in the Victorian Wimmera); and, in 1985, the first voicing of concern over the spread of yabbies to natural habitats, particularly in the higher rainfall region of the southwest, together with current national and international concerns and advice on introduced aquatic species.

During mid 1988 the Minister for Fisheries at that time, the Hon Julian Grill, sought the establishment of a committee of advice to examine security arrangements for financial institutions providing funds for fishing licences and fishing boats. The prime objective of the Committee was to examine and report upon the requirements for establishing fishing licences as a form of collateral for loans. Broccoli (Brassica oleracae, variety italica) is closely related to cabbage, cauliflowers, brussel sprouts and kohl rabi. This group of plants may be referred to as crucifers, brassicas or cole crops.

Broccoli originated in Italy. The head consists of well developed green flower buds on a fleshy flower stalk. It is high in protein, calcium, fibre and vitamins A and C.
