A Complement, Not A Competitor: How Public Markets Can Support Business Districts In Worcester, Ron M. Barron May 2016

A Complement, Not A Competitor: How Public Markets Can Support Business Districts In Worcester, Ron M. Barron

Sustainability and Social Justice

The purpose of this paper is to examine the possible economic and community development impacts of entry-level public markets (e.g. fixed location markets, farmers markets, etc.) on the communities in which they operate. While there is extensive literature around their benefits to vendors, community health and public space, there is comparative little on the interplay between these markets and more traditional brick and mortar businesses. The background and definition of these markets, the basic common characteristics that define them, and some of the benefits they can offer for economic and community development are each explored. It then examines two different …

Comparative Organizational Assessments And Partenship Potential For Sekou Pou Nanm-Yo And Asirans Community Counseling Center, Lauren M. Mawe

Sustainability and Social Justice

This paper assesses the organizational capacity of two small Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) in Port-Au-Prince Haiti. Each NGO has a staff of under 15 members. At the time of the assessment, they were both in early stages of their development, with one in its first year of operations, and the other in its fifth year. Both embody grassroots, community organizations because of their connections to the communities in which they work, their willingness to travel to those communities, and their predominantly Haitian staff. The fieldwork included interviews, focus groups, and three months of participant observation and work with these organizations. In …

4 Wynnes Boating Manufacturing Company: A Market Analysis And Business Plan For Northwest Arkansas, Hayden S. Wynne

Accounting Undergraduate Honors Theses

This thesis focuses on a business plan for the opening and developing of a boat manufacturing company in Northwest Arkansas and, specifically, manufacturing of duck hunting boats. South Arkansas and Eastern Arkansas have boat-manufacturing companies, but none exist in Northwest Arkansas. Having developed an interest in duck hunting over the years, I have discovered a tremendous need to bring the boats to where a large portion of Arkansas population exists. The objective of this business is to identify the Northwest Arkansas market viability for a customized duck boat manufacturing company. This analysis and evaluation is meant to provide a business …

Seats: A Business Plan, Mycah Sandridge May 2016

Seats: A Business Plan, Mycah Sandridge

Supply Chain Management Undergraduate Honors Theses

Every year over 88 million people participate in recreational boating on lakes all across the U.S. (http://www.statista.com/topics/1138/recreational-boating/). While enjoying their favorite aquatic activities, these people have needs and desires just like any other time in life, but with a relatively high opportunity cost to acquire goods. Making a trip to the marina and back costs both money and time that boaters would rather be spending having fun with family and friends. The Seats model, a mobile vending vessel, will fill this gap, providing food necessities and a fun environment that does not require boaters to dock their boat in order …

On The Behavior Of Entrepreneurial Factor Supply To The Firm, Nicos Zafiris May 2016

On The Behavior Of Entrepreneurial Factor Supply To The Firm, Nicos Zafiris

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

This paper draws on an existing, but little used, approach to the choices governing the supply of ‘entrepreneurial’, in the sense of ‘residually remunerated’, resources to an enterprise, especially post start up. It focuses in particular on the hybrid ‘own factor demand/supply curve’ to the firm of Bronfenbrenner (1960), but attempts to treat such supply in conjunction with ‘contractual’ employment of resources, thus making use of gearing and portfolio concepts. To achieve this, it is found necessary for the hybrid schedule to be reinterpreted and recast as the locus of the relevant utility maximising choices. A model is presented which …

Turkish Smes’ Use Of Financial Statements For Decision Making, Howard E. Vanauken, Semra Ascigil, Shawn Carraher May 2016

Turkish Smes’ Use Of Financial Statements For Decision Making, Howard E. Vanauken, Semra Ascigil, Shawn Carraher

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

With a sample of 91 small Turkish firms, this study examines the factors that affect the use of financial statements, and the important information they contain, to make decisions. A principal components analysis identifies three key variables that determine the use of financial statements: experience, confidence, and knowledge. Logit analysis reveals that these three variables are significantly associated with whether Turkish business owners use financial statements to make decisions. These results can help business owners and service providers for these businesses understand what affects their use of financial statements and the process by which financial statements get incorporated into decisions.

The global market for e-learning is projected to reach $255 billion by 2017 with a compound growth average of 23% since 2012 (GSV Advisors, 2012). The shift towards digital learning has attracted a wave of digital entrepreneurs who are creating e-learning content, learning platforms, educational apps and online marketplaces. Nowhere is this more evident than in the online 'K-12' market (50 per cent share of the global e-learning market). The term K-12 refers to 12 years of formal primary and secondary education from kindergarten (K) or nursery – essentially pre-university level education. The purpose of this paper is to investigate …

Persuasion Of Online Crowdfunding Videos, Matthew Roe May 2016

Persuasion Of Online Crowdfunding Videos, Matthew Roe

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Crowdfunding is a relatively new and exciting way to get investments for a business startup or other project. We use the elaboration likelihood model (ELM) to explore how individuals are persuaded by the project videos on a crowdfunding platform called Kickstarter. ELM is a psychological model used to understand how people are persuaded. Our results support most of our hypotheses and showed that the need for cognition, which reflects the personal tendency towards the central route of ELM, does increase an individual’s intent to back a project. We also discovered that intrinsic motivations and product quality have a stronger effect …

Students Today Into Entrepreneurs Tomorrow: The Impact Of Major Choice On Grit And Risk Aversion, Keith D. Larkin Apr 2016

Students Today Into Entrepreneurs Tomorrow: The Impact Of Major Choice On Grit And Risk Aversion, Keith D. Larkin

Business and Economics Honors Papers

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that more than half of all start-ups in the US fail before their fifth year in operation (BLS, 2010). As a result, since the mid-1980s, colleges and universities nationwide have continued to increase opportunities and funding to improve entrepreneurial education. Yet, little is known about how the choices students make during their time in college, like major choice, impact personality traits that are beneficial to entrepreneurship. Specifically, these traits are grit and risk aversion. The theoretically successful entrepreneurs are able to be committed to goals and remain motivated despite setbacks. Simultaneously they must maintain …

Small Enterprise Strategies In An Unstable Public Environment, Daryl Green, Thomas Kohntopp

Walden Faculty and Staff Publications

Many small business owners in the United States dream about getting a large contract with the federal government, feeling that their lives would be easier if they did. Ironically, there have been numerous occasions where small businesses have gone out of business after being overwhelmed by a government contract. This case study addresses how small businesses can improve their survival and success rate in the public sector with a strategic approach to their operations. It begins by discussing the preparation that goes into federal contracting by small businesses. Case examples of four American companies involved in contracting with the Department …

Synchonizing U.S. States' Strategic Plans To Increase Exports To Emerging Markets, Jayati Ghosh, Denise M. Lucy, Françoise O. Lepage

Collected Faculty Scholarship

The United States seeks to increase and expand exports to emerging markets. The majority of U.S. firms (98 percent) are small to medium sized enterprises (SMEs) with only 1 percent engaging in exporting. The Federal and State Governments encourage SMEs to expand exporting through the National Export Initiative (NEI) and NEI/NEXT initiatives. This paper examines NEI’s progress and strategies by leading U.S. exporting states, export activity to BRICSA, states’ alignment with NEI and the extent to which NEI has facilitated federal and state collaboration. Further, it reviews NEI/NEXT objectives and strategies to internationalize U.S. business practices.

This project focuses on small business restaurants, specifically those that serve pizza. The backbone of experimentation for applying these accounting processes is a local pizza restaurant, in which the managers are unaware of how food cost and operating expenses could be combined …

Applying Trait Theory To Determine The Causality Of The Entrepreneur’S Success, Samuel Moyer Apr 2016

Applying Trait Theory To Determine The Causality Of The Entrepreneur’S Success, Samuel Moyer

Selected Honors Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to apply trait theory through psychoanalysis in an attempt to determine why three noted entrepreneurs: Andrew Carnegie, Walt Disney, and Oprah Winfrey, were highly successful in their respective ventures as well as discuss the extent to which indicative traits of entrepreneurial success were present in the subjects studied. Research shows that components of entrepreneurs’ traits and motivation have a direct relationship to the start-up and continued success of new venture firms (Baum, Locke, 2004) which means more accurate definitions of traits responsible for entrepreneurial success are beneficial to investors, entrepreneurs, and the entire economic …

Entrepreneurial Marketing: A Historical Exploration And Implications For Practice, Sofia Victoria Ramos

With the growth of Entrepreneurial Marketing (EM) research over the past several decades, researchers have found these practices to be effective not only for SME’s but also for larger firms. Because of this, researchers are offering Entrepreneurial Marketing theory as a solution for all firms seeking a competitive advantage in a volatile market. Entrepreneurial Marketing, which is the innovative, opportunity seeking approach most entrepreneurs and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) …
