Managing A Large Scale Project: Using Strengthsfinder In The Website Redesign, Laura Edwards, Cristina Tofan
Managing A Large Scale Project: Using Strengthsfinder In The Website Redesign, Laura Edwards, Cristina Tofan
EKU Faculty and Staff Scholarship
After doing a library-wide StrengthsFinder assessment that highlighted the strengths of its individuals, EKU Libraries decided to put this strategy into practice by applying it to one of the most complex projects in the life of an academic library: the website redesign. This decentralized approach allowed project managers to align strengths-based teams with phases of the redesign that would most benefit from that team’s unique strengths.

Construction Professional Service Firm Management: A Longitudinal Study Of Strategic Planning In Irish Quantity Surveying Practices, Roisin Murphy
Conference papers
This paper reports on the ongoing investigation of strategic planning in Irish Quantity Surveying practices. The construction industry in Ireland has undergone a period of significant change in the last five years fuelling a shift in focus from tactical to strategic planning in professional service firms operating within the sector. A previous paper identified the type, scope and extent of strategic planning within Quantity Surveying (QS) practices in Ireland in the years up to and during the economic downturn. The current paper expands on the previous research by identifying changes in approach to strategic management within these professional service firms …

Manager In The Making: Learning To Manage People, Projects, And Time, Laura Edwards, Cristina Tofan
EKU Faculty and Staff Scholarship
In addition to keeping their own professional skills up to date, new managers need to learn quickly how to think strategically, delegate, and successfully supervise and lead their staff. In most cases, these skills are learned on the job, without prior training or with limited mentoring. We will draw on what we learned from the literature and from our own experience to illustrate the skills that we feel contribute the most to the making of a great manager and, ultimately, an effective leader.

There was two parts to this group project. Although we had five people, the second part consisted of us dividing our group into sections. We had to interview one another so we could get the feel of both roles; the person being interviewed and the manger. The first part of the assignment consisted of myself and four other girls working with each other to create a paper. It was a single spaced two page paper that talked about our backgrounds and why we choose a business major. My major is mainly finance, but there was no option to just choose …

Doing Well By Doing Good? The Case Of Magrabi Foundation, Mohammad Saeed Shalaby
Theses and Dissertations
This study aims at empirically investigating the business case of corporate social responsibility for private hospitals. The study attempts to explore the possible monetary and non-monetary business benefits for the Magrabi Hospital, in the Community Outreach Program carried out by the Magrabi Foundation. In addition, the study further attempts to understand the role of these potential benefits, on the deci- sion-making processes of the top executives in private hospitals. The study uses a mixed qualitative and quantitative approach through a three stages process for examining the qualitative and quantitative roles of CSR, as well as the evaluation of the strategic …

We develop a temporal and spatial partial equilibrium model to evaluate the welfare impact of new technology on the apple industry to control fire blight. We show significant benefits of GM technology relative to conventional methods and other new methods such as microencapsulation of biological agents. We also show that the cost-reduction benefits of the technology exceed the yield-increasing benefits.
Consciousness Of Connectedness, Greater Purpose And Positive Business, Social And Environmental Outcomes, Joseph Leah
Consciousness Of Connectedness, Greater Purpose And Positive Business, Social And Environmental Outcomes, Joseph Leah
Student Scholarship
Do leaders who define their business in terms of achieving a greater purpose as well as financial profit attain more favorable outcomes in terms of both profit and social or environmental outcomes? When those leaders approach their business with a sense of connectedness (or what we call a "consciousness of connectedness"), do they create an environment in their organizations with higher levels of shared vision, greater compassion and collaboration, and does this in turn lead to positive social and environmental outcomes as well as better economic outcomes? This exploratory research is aimed at investigating how a consciousness of connectedness within …

Does A Physician's Decision Making Process Effect Patient Participation In The Treatment Choices Of Primary Immunodeficiency?, Chris Lamb
Student Scholarship
Increased patient participation in the treatment of chronic diseases is thought to result in improved patient health. Increased participation should lead to earlier diagnosis and better treatment. However, the role of the physician in facilitating patient participation has not been extensively studied. Dual process theory and shared decision making theory were used to create a predictive model. Then a quantitative study was then performed on 330 physicians in the US treating a chronic disorder: Primary Immunodeficiency. The results suggest that a physician's decision making style (rational vs. heuristic) and orientation (patient-centric) has an effect on the level of patient participation. …
An Improved Model For Trust-Aware Recommender Systems Based On Multi-Faceted Trust, Peihu Zhu
An Improved Model For Trust-Aware Recommender Systems Based On Multi-Faceted Trust, Peihu Zhu
Lingnan Theses
As customers enjoy the convenience of online shopping today, they face the problem of selecting from hundreds of thousands of products. Recommender systems, which make recommendations by matching products to customers based on the features of the products and the purchasing history of customers, are increasingly being incorporated into e-commerce websites. Collaborative filtering is a major approach to design algorithms for these systems. Much research has been directed toward enhancing the performance of recommender systems by considering various psychological and behavioural factors affecting the behaviour of users, e.g. trust and emotion.
While e-commerce firms are keen to exploit information on …

In preparation of these mega sports events, Rio has been challenged to improve infrastructure, build Olympic venues and reduce crime in the favelas. The purpose of the research is to collect data on the perceptions of potential visitors to Brazil, specifically, Rio de Janeiro to determine if the preparation for and hosting of the mega sports events is changing the image of the favelas.

Quantum Teaming: How To Create A Virtual Internship To Provide Online Students With Real-World Experience, Desiree Depriest
SIDLIT Conference
KapConsulting is a one-of-a-kind online internship at Kaplan University consisting of Kaplan Radio, Kaplan Financial, and KapTechnology. Students from diverse backgrounds come together to run a virtual real-world agile company. KapConsulting explores the applicability of quantum concepts, entanglement, superposition and uncertainty, in creating an environment where synergy can occur naturally among virtual interns. Superposition is a measurable phenomenon that occurs when each individual team member contributes their skills and many “Clark Kents” become “The Justice League.” This presentation discusses creating a collaborative environment where quantum teaming occurs and how KapTechnology implements strategies to achieve win-win synergistic outcomes.
