Full Issue: Bridging The Gap (Vol. 2, Issue 1), Marianna Richardson

Marriott Student Review

A bridge brings together two pieces, which normally would not connect. Without the connecting link, those two sections would be separate. For example, a bridge between two landmasses gives travelers access to new locations, new vistas, and possibly even new opportunities. Bridging the gap can also be perilous if the bridge is not safe and secure. The connection needs to be maintained and inspected regularly for cracks, fissures, or signs of wear that should be fixed immediately. In this issue of Marriott Student Review, the authors have explored the bridges built in business and the importance of maintaining those connections.

Macra And Rural Hospitals, Erica Kelley, Rhea Lipscomb, Jennifer Valdez, Alberto Coustasse Apr 2018

Macra And Rural Hospitals, Erica Kelley, Rhea Lipscomb, Jennifer Valdez, Alberto Coustasse

Management Faculty Research

The purpose of this research was to study MACRA (Medicare Access & CHIP Reauthorization Act) and to determine how its implementation would financially impact rural hospitals. Although the long-term effects of MACRA have not been able to be studied, MACRA has the prospective to negatively impact rural hospitals financially. MACRA has potential risks and benefits for physicians associated with its two reimbursement payment methods. The estimated negative reimbursements and set reductions to hospital reimbursement have supported the idea that physicians and all healthcare organizations need to be aware and prepared for MACRA.

The Digital Global Supply Chain: The Growing Case For Blockchain Technology Expansion Within Global Supply Chain, Jonathan Chichoni, Scott Webb Dr.

I characterize the …

How To Help Non-Profit Hospitals Serve Better, Lee Wynja Apr 2018

How To Help Non-Profit Hospitals Serve Better, Lee Wynja

Celebration of Research

Whether to grant lucrative hospitals tax-exempt status is a controversial legal topic. Under the current law, non-profits must provide community benefit, a specific type of charitable giving, to maintain their tax-exempt status. The goal of this paper is to argue that hospitals’ community benefit requirement should be strengthened and further specified. I plan to show that the non-profit hospitals can afford charitable contributions to surrounding communities, but such contributions are a small share of their expenditures. I propose two easy steps can be made to make the community benefit requirement meaningful. First, the Community Needs Assessment should be done every …

Weary At Work: A Conservation Of Resources Approach To Understanding Job-Related Boredom, Candace Angela Esken Apr 2018

Weary At Work: A Conservation Of Resources Approach To Understanding Job-Related Boredom, Candace Angela Esken

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Despite the pervasive nature of boredom in the workplace, there has been surprisingly little theoretical and empirical analysis on the phenomenon. The existing research suffers from several shortcomings preventing progress on job-related boredom including the lack of an agreed definition and a properly developed and validated measure of the construct. This dissertation addresses these deficiencies by first developing and validating a psychometrically sound measure for job-related boredom. Then, drawing upon conservation of resources theory, hypotheses for the antecedents and consequences of job-related boredom were tested using a sample of 199 employees at a large insurance organization in the United States. …

When Public Recognition For Charitable Giving Backfires: The Role Of Independent Self-Construal, Bonnie Simpson, Katherine White, Juliano Laran Apr 2018

When Public Recognition For Charitable Giving Backfires: The Role Of Independent Self-Construal, Bonnie Simpson, Katherine White, Juliano Laran

Management and Organizational Studies Publications

This research examines the effectiveness of public recognition in encouraging charitable giving, demonstrating that public recognition can sometimes decrease donations. While previous work has largely shown that making donations visible to others can motivate donors, the present research shows that the effectiveness of public recognition depends on whether potential donors are under an independent (i.e., separate from others) or interdependent (i.e., connected with others) self-construal. Across seven experimental studies, an independent self-construal decreases donation intentions and amounts when the donor will receive public recognition compared to when the donation will remain private. This effect is driven by the activation of …

Risk Consumption, Sridhar Ramamoorti, Rick Stover Apr 2018

Risk Consumption, Sridhar Ramamoorti, Rick Stover

Accounting Faculty Publications

Understanding the difference between risk appetite and risk tolerance can deter organizations from digesting too much risk.

The concepts of risk appetite and risk tolerance were introduced in 2004 in The Committee of Sponsoring Organizations of the Treadway Commission’s (COSO’s) Enterprise Risk Management–Integrated Framework. Specifically, COSO defines risk appetite as “the amount of risk — on a broad level — that an entity is willing to accept in pursuit of value.” Naturally, organizations will have different risk appetites depending on their industry, management philosophy, operating style, culture, and objectives. Therefore, a range of appetites potentially exist for distinct risks, which …

Identifying The Competencies Of Middle Managers Leading Successful Strategy Implementation, Zafar Abdulmajid Momin Apr 2018

Identifying The Competencies Of Middle Managers Leading Successful Strategy Implementation, Zafar Abdulmajid Momin

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

How does one successfully implement strategy? Persistent and alarmingly high failure rates of strategy implementation still prevail due to the myriad variables and complexities associated with execution, the brunt of which typically falls to middle management. Unfortunately, most organizations do not exercise sufficient rigor in the process and criteria to select the right middle managers for executing strategy, despite middle managers having a substantial impact on outcomes. Business leaders lack the necessary tools and frameworks for competency assessment to support their decision-making. This research seeks to provide evidence that selection of the right middle managers is more likely to lead …

Consumer Perceptions Of Social Business Practices In South Korea And Thailand, Emily Gaynor Apr 2018

Consumer Perceptions Of Social Business Practices In South Korea And Thailand, Emily Gaynor

Capstone Collection

The global economy is shifting from Western capitalism towards more inclusive alternatives. Leaders like Muhammed Yunus are normalizing global social enterprise opportunities and cross-sector collaboration. International certifications like B Corporations, Fair Trade, Cruelty Free (The Leaping Rabbit), 1% for the Planet, and the Rainforest Alliance are rapidly growing their networks. Universities, nonprofit organizations, businesses, and governments are incorporating social entrepreneurship into their best practices. In particular, Asia has seen significant growth in its social economy.

Notably, South Korea and Thailand (with six other Asian countries) are included in the world’s 30 best nations to be a social entrepreneur. Particular attention …

Indah: The Unorthodox Rise Of A Columbian Staple, Will Helms

Senior Theses

Over the course of several weeks, I conducted a series of observations at Indah Coffee Co. in order to better understand its marketing and interaction with the neighborhood. After observing the coffee shop several times, I consulted outside sources, a process that is considered to be in the psychological realm of “grounded theory”, constantly comparing them to my own observations. After an interview with Indah’s owner, I began compiling my findings. The following paper is an outline of my findings, including the importance of the product in the coffee industry versus other industries, the power of successful grassroots marketing, and …
