Unretentive Incentives, Rebekah Paradis Apr 2019

Unretentive Incentives, Rebekah Paradis

Student Scholar Showcase

In the workplace, managers often offer monetary rewards or incentives as instantaneous motivators in hopes that it will alter employee behavior. Unfortunately, although these rewards have been proven to yield desired outcomes, their impacts are short lived as managers create an environment based on extrinsic motivation. When an employee works solely to receive a paycheck it is already challenging to keep them, as other companies can offer them comparable, if not better, salaries. It is even harder to retain an employee who is accustomed to receiving an incentive with a particular behavior when the reward is no longer an option, …

Action Research: A Review And Proposal For Application In Marketing Inquiry, Sereikhuoch Eng, Nikhilesh Dholakia

The Qualitative Report

Action research has a very limited track record in marketing. We take an applied and practical approach and begin with a review of action research as a method, then turn to a more focused review of action research in marketing contexts, discussing the plausible constraints and advantages. Based on these reviews, we offer a conceptual framework and several application areas for marketing action research. We summarize case study examples from three market locations that have used action research as a method of inquiry to illustrate and encourage researchers and practitioners to further integrate action research in their research endeavors. We …

Cooperation In Community Colleges, Frederic S. Gore Apr 2019

Cooperation In Community Colleges, Frederic S. Gore

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

With the mounting pressures on institutions of higher education to do more with limited resources, the opportunity to collaborate with other colleges has emerged as a viable tool to create efficiencies and obtain valuable knowledge otherwise unattainable by an institution, even if that collaboration takes place with a competing institution. Enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems are critical to managing student information and college operations, but can be challenging for colleges to implement. Consortia present a unique solution to colleges to address gaps in their expertise and skills needed to achieve a successful ERP implementation. This study explores the factors that …

The Underutilized Tool Of Project Management - Emotional Intelligence, Gerald C. Lowe Apr 2019

The Underutilized Tool Of Project Management - Emotional Intelligence, Gerald C. Lowe

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Previous research has typically focused on singular attributes that impact a leader’s effectiveness. This study, instead, looks at whether emotional intelligence moderates the anticipated negative effect of distributed presence on engagement and influence, and ultimately, leader effectiveness. Buttressed by emotional intelligence, engagement, and influence theories, the research question focused on how emotional intelligence skills moderate the impact of a project manager’s distributed presence to render the leader effective. The study sample for this research came from voluntary participants who work for a U.S. government agency comprising leaders co-located with their teams and distributed presence leaders. Descriptive statistics showed that leaders …

Virtual International Leadership Within Organizations: Overcoming Cultural, Language, And Physical Barriers, Jaye Goulet Apr 2019

Virtual International Leadership Within Organizations: Overcoming Cultural, Language, And Physical Barriers, Jaye Goulet

Thinking Matters Symposium Archive

Advances in technology are allowing members of a team to collaborate while being geographically and spatially apart. These new teams, known as virtual teams, have benefits for both the organizations to which they belong and to the individual members. Organizations are able to utilize highly-skilled experts without the associated relocation costs. Team members are able to contribute to projects in their field of expertise without having to leave their homeland. These teams require a leader whose interactions build trust and loyalty without the benefit of face-to-face contact with other team members. Although virtual teams are rapidly growing, research is lacking …

Masterpiece Cakeshop: A Case Study Brought To You By The U.S. Supreme Court, Edward J. Schoen

Rohrer College of Business Departmental Research

In Masterpiece Cakeshop, Ltd. v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission,[1] the U.S. Supreme Court ruled seven to two that the Colorado Civil Rights Commission (“the Commission”) violated the free exercise rights of a baker, who refused to sell a custom-designed wedding cake to a gay couple, by reflecting hostility toward the baker’s religious beliefs during public hearings in the case and treating him differently from three other bakers who objected to creating wedding cakes with messages expressing derogatory views of same-sex marriage.[2] In reaching its decision, the Court sidestepped the chore of reconciling two fundamental principles: (1) whether …

The Velocity Of Risk, Sridhar Ramamoorti, James H. Wanserski, Richard Stover Apr 2019

The Velocity Of Risk, Sridhar Ramamoorti, James H. Wanserski, Richard Stover

Accounting Faculty Publications

Only a few decades ago, the onset of problematic risk events often was slow, and organizations handled the corresponding aftermath over a manageable time frame. Organizations armed with extensive public relations resources responded to most postevent crises after planning and analyzing thoughtful responses. Additionally, organizations carefully calculated their transparency with stakeholders regarding the event to manage its impact on the organization. Fast forward to today, and the pace of information is almost instantaneous. For example, when a popular U.S. fast food restaurant chain experienced an outbreak of E. coli-infected lettuce, its stock price decreased 44 percent within 90 days amid …

The Use Of Blockchain Technology To Solve Common Challenges In The Supply Chain, Michael Cohen Apr 2019

The Use Of Blockchain Technology To Solve Common Challenges In The Supply Chain, Michael Cohen

Thinking Matters Symposium Archive

When blockchain was first invented by Satoshi Nakamoto in 2008 it was thought to only be used for Bitcoin; a digital currency. It had been used to record transactions made without needing a third party authenticator. Blockchain showed the ability to reduce costs, speed up transactions, and reinvent the processes of how things are done. Once people fully understood what blockchain does, entrepreneurs and investors realized it could be used for much more than just a cryptocurrency. It could be applied to transportation, products sold, food, the medical industry, and much more.
With the help of blockchain, industries can operate …

A Guide To Leadership Development At A Company, Bridget Nobiletti Apr 2019

A Guide To Leadership Development At A Company, Bridget Nobiletti

Senior Honors Projects

Leadership development is essential for companies because it drives a company’s effectiveness in reaching its goal and promotes growth among employees, causing them to want to stay with the company. Knowing how to develop employee leadership is complex because it is largely dependent on the individual and their role within the organization. I interviewed leadership professionals and human resource professionals who have experience in leadership development to guide my research. I broke up management into three categories and found that the different segments of management need different skills in order to be effective at their jobs. The first step to …

Rethinking The Obvious: Time For New Ideas On Medical Malpractice Tort Reform, Jarred Gerlach, Bukola Abodunde, Marc D. Sollosy, Alberto Coustasse

Management Faculty Research

States have engaged in medical malpractice litigation reforms over the past 30 years to reduce malpractice insurance premiums, increase the supply of physicians, reduce the cost of healthcare, and increase efficiency. These reforms have included caps on non-economic damages and legal procedural changes. Despite these reforms, healthcare costs in the U.S. remain among the highest in the world, provider shortages remain, and defensive medicine practices persist. The purpose of this study was to determine how successful traditional medical malpractice reforms have been at controlling medical costs, decreasing defensive medicine practices, lowering malpractice premiums, and reducing the frequency of medical malpractice …

Leaders And Followers Behaving Badly: A Meta-Analytic Examination Of Curvilinear Relationships Between Destructive Leadership And Followers’ Workplace Behaviors, Jeremy D. Mackey, Charn P. Mcallister, Liam P. Maher, Gang Wang Apr 2019

Leaders And Followers Behaving Badly: A Meta-Analytic Examination Of Curvilinear Relationships Between Destructive Leadership And Followers’ Workplace Behaviors, Jeremy D. Mackey, Charn P. Mcallister, Liam P. Maher, Gang Wang

Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

We draw from social psychological and resource-based theories to meta-analytically examine the existence, form, and magnitude of curvilinear relationships between destructive leadership and followers’ workplace behaviors (i.e., job performance, organizational citizenship behaviors, and workplace deviance). Overall, our meta-analytic results demonstrate weak evidence of curvilinear relationships between destructive leadership and followers’ workplace behaviors. However, we did find some support for the application of social psychological theories when examining the curvilinear effects of destructive leadership on followers’ workplace behaviors at extreme levels of destructive leadership (i.e., two standard deviations below and above the mean). Our findings are important because they (1) provide …
