A Social Learning Approach To Organizational Behavior, Tim R.V. Davis, Fred Luthans
A Social Learning Approach To Organizational Behavior, Tim R.V. Davis, Fred Luthans
Department of Management: Faculty Publications
After first reviewing the existing theoretical frameworks for human behavior, we present a social learning theory approach that incorporates the interactive nature of all the variables of organizational behavior - the behavior itself, the environment, and the person (internal cognitions). We differentiate social learning theory from operant theory, highlighting the processes of modeling, cognitions, and self-control. We suggest self- management techniques as a way to apply the social learning framework in order to enhance managerial effectiveness.

Time Series Analysis As An Approach To Short Term Forecasting Of Unit Volume In A Part Of The Electrical Industry, William C. Cleveland
Time Series Analysis As An Approach To Short Term Forecasting Of Unit Volume In A Part Of The Electrical Industry, William C. Cleveland
Research Reports from the Department of Operations
This study investigates the use of time series analysis to improve short-term forecasting of unit volume in a segment of the electrical industry. Various forecasting methods were compared based on their theoretical approaches and effectiveness in reducing forecast error residuals. The Box-Jenkins methodology was identified as the most reliable, outperforming other methods in producing accurate forecasts and parameter estimates for future demand. Statistical tests, including the F-ratio, confirmed the superiority of Box-Jenkins models over competing techniques, which often relied on erroneous assumptions. Key findings highlight the availability of better forecasting models, the potential of Box-Jenkins techniques to optimize forecasting outcomes, …

Grain Transportation Problems In Nebraska: Causes And Cures [Proceedings Of The Nebraska Grain Transportation Seminar], Dale G. Anderson, Dean Linsenmeyer, Michael S. Turner
Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications
The Nebraska feed grain and soybean harvest of 1979 was one which will not soon be forgotten by those who participated in its production and marketing. Yields and production broke all previous records. Record export demands for the crop placed record service requirements on transportation and handling systems. Record movements of grain from farms to elevators and to inland and export terminals were reported. At the same time, complaints of inadequate capacity to store and transport the grain were perhaps also of all-time record proportions. Corn and milo accumulated in open piles on farms and at country collection points. Problems …
Two Backtrack Algorithms For The Radio Frequency Intermodulation Problem, Susumu Morito, Harvey M. Salkin, David E. Williams
Two Backtrack Algorithms For The Radio Frequency Intermodulation Problem, Susumu Morito, Harvey M. Salkin, David E. Williams
Research Reports from the Department of Operations
Two or more radio signals, transmitted from a small platform (e.g., a ship, satellite, or airplane, etc.), tend to produce an intermodulation product which could distort a receive signal. The intensity of intermodulation interference due to a given intermodulation frequency is known to be closely related to the lowest order, or simply the order, of the intermodulation product which can be found by solving a single constraint integer program with variables unrestricted in sign, where coefficients of the constraint equation correspond to frequencies. Two variations of backtrack, or search enumeration algorithms, called the primal and dual backtrack algorithms, are developed …

The Optimal Selection Of A Portfolio Of Commodity Futures Trading Advisors, Harvey M. Salkin, Peter H. Ritchken
The Optimal Selection Of A Portfolio Of Commodity Futures Trading Advisors, Harvey M. Salkin, Peter H. Ritchken
Research Reports from the Department of Operations
In response to rising inflation, investors are increasingly exploring commodity futures for higher returns. This study examines the dynamics of managed commodity futures accounts, focusing on two investor classes: active portfolio managers and passive investors relying on professional advisors. It identifies the challenges investors face in selecting advisors, highlighting the need for detailed advisor information and comparative analyses. Additionally, it addresses the complexities of constructing optimal portfolios of advisors or investments in open-ended commodity pools to balance risk and reward. The authors conducted a three-month study (ending June 1979) aiming to develop a quantitative investment system for designing portfolios that …

Wrap Line Effectiveness Study, Arnold Reisman, S. Kotha, L. Gonzaga, B. Kidd, T. Murray
Research Reports from the Department of Operations
This report details a collaborative effort to enhance the efficiency of order picking and wrapping operations at the George R. Klein News Company. The study, conducted by a task force comprising members from the Klein organization and the Department of Operations Research at Case Western Reserve University, focused on optimizing manpower deployment, line speed, title assignment, and workstation configurations. Data collection involved analyzing company reports, time studies, and consultations with management and staff. Key recommendations include mechanical and computer-aided enhancements to streamline decision-making processes, such as belt space indicators and automated title assignments. Preliminary results suggest significant productivity improvements following …

Applications Of Multi-Attribute Utility Theory In The Health Care Delivery System Since 1970, Durjoy Kumar Chaudhuri, Arnold Reisman
Applications Of Multi-Attribute Utility Theory In The Health Care Delivery System Since 1970, Durjoy Kumar Chaudhuri, Arnold Reisman
Research Reports from the Department of Operations
The Multi-Attribute Utility Theory is a special branch of a more generalized body of theories collectively known as "Decision Theory". Peter Fishburn described it as the "personalistic prescriptive theory of choice for individual decisions". It is personalistic because the decision maker is an indispensable component in almost every phase of research since his personal values and judgements are intimately involved in a decision-making activity. It should be stressed that the multi-attribute utility theory was never meant to be the panacea of any or all decision problems. It helps the decision maker to choose a strategy (or a course of action) …

Final Layout Study Report For Cole Consumer Products, Inc., A. Dale Flowers
Research Reports from the Department of Operations
The purpose of this report is to summarize the analysis and recommendations of the consulting team for the Cole Consumer Products, Inc. layout study. Most of these results were previously presented to the Layout Study Steering Committee, but are collected here into one document for convenience and future reference. Since much of this information has been previously discussed, we shall limit our explanations to brief ones. The format of our report is to present a brief explanation of the exhibits we prepared for our analyses, followed by the exhibits themselves. As indicated in the Table of Contents, the organization of …

The Role Of Simulation In Health Care Delivery Operations Management Studies, Arnold Reisman, N. G. Duraiswamy
The Role Of Simulation In Health Care Delivery Operations Management Studies, Arnold Reisman, N. G. Duraiswamy
Research Reports from the Department of Operations
Simulation has been used in a number of different roles and in rather disparate health services operations management settings. The paper discusses some of these role/setting combinations to indicate this methodology's depth of usefulness and breadth of applications in a sector approaching 10% of the GNP -- a sector which is under great pressure to contain costs, yet maintain and expand the quality and quantity of services rendered.
