Managing In The Technical Sales Arena, Robert Munro
Managing In The Technical Sales Arena, Robert Munro
Theses
The major objective of this thesis is to portray the role of a Field Engineer for a major manufacturer of electrical distribution and control equipment. In so doing, it should represent a reasonable facsimile of what a sales manager of a large Field Office, comprised of approximately twelve Field Engineers, would encounter in his supervisory capacity. As such, it should provide information for those interested in entering and hoping to manage in technical sales career.
While much of the information was derived from books, periodicals, and conversations with people associated with the electrical industry, the major portion of the work …

An Application Of Personal Microcomputer To Solve Mid-Sized Goal Programming Problems, Chanhon Joe Lu
An Application Of Personal Microcomputer To Solve Mid-Sized Goal Programming Problems, Chanhon Joe Lu
Theses
This thesis develops a microcomputer software to solve mid-sized goal programming problems utilizing the revised simplex method.
Goal programming is an extension of linear programming, but is more powerful and flexible than linear programming because of its capability in handling problems with multiple conflicting objectives, instead of dealing with "one dimensional" objective - profit maximization or cost minimization. Accordingly, goal programming is very useful to the complex organizational environments.
With the help of rapid and accurate computation of digital computers, solving a complex program is not a difficult task at all. However, some medium-sized companies cannot afford a mainframe -computer, …
An Assessment Of Job Attitudes Held By Hourly Workers At A Food Processing Plant, Charles J. Sheahan
An Assessment Of Job Attitudes Held By Hourly Workers At A Food Processing Plant, Charles J. Sheahan
Theses
This study applied Vroom's instrumentality-valence model to an assessment of the overall job attitude of hourly workers at a food processing plant. The specific job factors relating to the formation of overall job attitude are described and the managerial implications of the results are discussed. A short discussion of the relationship of these employees' attitudes to Herzberg's motivation-hygiene theory is also presented.
The results of the study indicate a moderate degree of job satisfaction based on Vroom's model. Additionally, the correlations of specific instrumentality to specific valence give a strong indication that the subjects value rewards they perceive as attainable, …
The Operational Utility Of The Walton-Mckersie Attitudinal Structuring Model In Collective Bargaining, Donald Warren
The Operational Utility Of The Walton-Mckersie Attitudinal Structuring Model In Collective Bargaining, Donald Warren
Theses
This work is an heuristic inquiry into behavioral change theory designed for application to labor/management interaction in collective bargaining. The theory itself was postulated by Richard E. Walton and Robert B. McKersie in their book A Behavioral Theory Of Labor Negotiations. The principles of their theory are highly axiomatic and their importance and validity can only be recognized through applied empirical analyses that demonstrate or refute its concept.
The aspect of the theory which is the focal point of this research pertains to the structuring and restructuring of attitudes and attendant relationships resulting from the collective bargaining process. The objective …

Design Criteria For Employee Alcholism Programs, Lee G. Conover
Theses
This thesis is an examination and evaluation of treating employee alcohol-related problems through a counseling program. Special attention has been given to the many aspects that must be considered for the implementation of a successful counseling program.
To gather the data for this thesis, a successful counseling program was observed and members of its counseling program staff, medical, labor relations, and personnel departments, along with its union representatives, were interviewed in order to draw on their experience and expertise in organizing, implementing and maintaining such a counseling program. A counseling program consultant, a representative of the New Jersey Department of …

There is discussed the work done by the author in designing jigs and fixtures to assist handicapped workers in production as well as the models of placement, job understanding and rehabilitation efforts.
The work was done at the Delaware County Branch of the Pennsylvania Association for the Blind, Chester, Pennsylvania where the author …
Proposed Product Plan For A High Growth, High Technology Organization, Alan R. Eschbach
Proposed Product Plan For A High Growth, High Technology Organization, Alan R. Eschbach
Theses
Analyzing and consequently redefining a corporation's product line or mix is an important task facing all manufacturing organizations. While this task is usually addressed in detail as part of an organization's business plan, it can be very disconcerting when an organization realizes that the markets and products that got them to where they are now will not necessarily be the ones that will give them the growth that they would like to realize. Redefining the product line can be even more critical to young, high technology organizations who have never done it before and have found themselves facing the possibility …
Management Of The Interface Between Product Design And Production, Adam Fischer
Management Of The Interface Between Product Design And Production, Adam Fischer
Theses
The goal of this thesis was to identify some of the many obstacles which tend to, in some way or manner, delay the timely, satisfactory progression of new developments from becoming new profit items. These obstacles which are numerous are the results of personal observation plus research of many books and periodicals. The identification of the obstacles will hopefully result in their obviation. Notable accomplishments along these lines tend to:
1. Reduce the loss of opportunity to gain an appreciable market share.
2. Reduce investment/overhead cost by earlier recovery of cost through earlier marketing effort.
3. Reduce continuing engineering costs …
Organizing To Manage Future Information Technologies, John Patrick Paczkowski
Organizing To Manage Future Information Technologies, John Patrick Paczkowski
Theses
The area of information technology has undergone dramatic changes over the past ten years, and the rate of change is expected to continue to accelerate through the 1980's and beyond. The newly developing information systems are providing organizations with numerous options for enhancing the quality of managerial decision making, speeding communications and improving the efficiency and effectiveness of administrative/office processes. Unfortnately, many organizations are discovering that they are unable to effectively assimilate and utilize the technology effectively. Chief executives are finding that the traditional structures for managing Data Processing, Telecommunications, and office systems are often fragmented, lack the technical expertise …

Principles For Evaluating And Selection Of Alternative Systems, Chung-Ung Lee
Principles For Evaluating And Selection Of Alternative Systems, Chung-Ung Lee
Research Reports from the Department of Operations
The Multi Attribute Decision Making (MADM) problem arises in the selection of the most appropriate alternative from a set of very complex alternatives, such as, plans, projects, actions, tactics, strategies, products, etc. MADM methods are based on the multi-dimensionality of decision attributes. The significant advantage of the MADM method is that they avoid the rather arbitrary transformation of decision attribute values into unique monetary units. Moreover, these methods are capable of taking into account intangible attributes. But MADM methods may suffer from the degree of uncertainty, both in decision attribute values and in the weighting vector. The existence of many …
Functional Approximation Approach To Multistate Control Problems, Prasert Shusang
Functional Approximation Approach To Multistate Control Problems, Prasert Shusang
Research Reports from the Department of Operations
An iterative method for solving multistate dynamic control problems is presented. The algorithm differs from most decomposition methods currently used in the deterministic optimization of control systems. The method is described as a functional approximation of the recursive equation in dynamic programming. The basic concept is directly dependent on the Sensitivity Theorem in nonlinear programming. The method, referred to as Functional Approximation approach to multistate Control Problem (FACP) is shown to be efficient in case study for operation of multireservoir system. It results in a marked reduction in computer storage and thus directly increases the power of multistate dynamic programming …

A Network Method In The Management Of Innovative Start-Ups, Burton V. Dean
Research Reports from the Department of Operations
This study develops, tests, and evaluates a generic network-based method for use in the management of innovative start-ups. The major tasks accomplished in each start-up, including organizational, legal and accounting, financial, R&D, market research, manufacturing, and marketing were identified. For each major task, the significant activities, precedence relations, decisions nodes, alternative choices of action, and feedback loops were identified. The Q-GERT approach is used to model the innovative management process, involving probabilistic elements and decision processes. A computer program for Q-GERT simulation has been developed and applied to analyze different scenarios. In addition, computer outputs are obtained of such parameters …
