Analysis Of Corporate Culture And Community Relations: A Case Study Of Ibm, Lisa V. Sukovaty-Gordon Jan 1989

Analysis Of Corporate Culture And Community Relations: A Case Study Of Ibm, Lisa V. Sukovaty-Gordon

Graduate Research Papers

The basis for study of corporate culture grew from prior sociological and anthropological research. Etzioni (1964) found organizations which incorporate human resource technique in establishing goals were least likely to alienate their employees and were likely to produce desired responses. Etzioni's method for determining an organization's goals was through "inspection of interviews, minutes from board meetings, organization documents, division of labor, and allocation of resources (1964, p.6)." The purpose of cultures as defined by Etzioni should be to "provide a supportive setting for developing modern organizations and theme worldliness (1964, p.108-109)."

A Study Of Productivity Levels Under Theory X And Theory Y Management Styles, Kevin R. Hranicka Jan 1989

A Study Of Productivity Levels Under Theory X And Theory Y Management Styles, Kevin R. Hranicka

Theses

This thesis will focus on management and the effect of management orientation and style upon work group productivity.

Researchers have attempted to find methods for managers to use to increase employee work output or productivity for decades. As early as the beginning of the nineteenth century industrialists were experimenting with different methods of operation and organization in the hopes of raising output levels and increasing worker satisfaction. In the last fifty years management styles and employee productivity have played an ever increasingly important role in the economy as society has continued to institutionalize its needs and its providers.

This change …

Collaborative Approaches To The Sociopolitical Environment: The Emergence Of Issues Management Alliances, Douglas R. Austrom, Lawrence J. Lad

Scholarship and Professional Work - Business

Increasing turbulence in the sociopolitical environment is reshaping the environmental management strategies employed by business and other institutions. New expectations of the role of business in society, changing demographics, critical social problems such as spiraling health care costs, educational reform and child care, and environmental degradation are posing serious challenges to business organizations and society as a whole. Private, public, and independent sector institutions have initiated a wide variety of collaborative, multi-organizational approaches to issues management which we describe as issues management alliances (IMAs). Known by a myriad of labels such as public-private partnerships, innovating organizations, community development corporations, and …

Quality Control Of An Unreliable Open Queueing Network Flexible Manufacturing System : With Repairable Parts And Non-Negligible Inspection Times, Charles S. Tapiero, Lie-Fern Hsu

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

This paper examines the integration of quality control and repair mechanisms in flexible manufacturing systems (FMSs), addressing the challenges posed by automation and process complexity. Leveraging advanced computer-aided quality control technologies such as computer vision and laser-based systems, the study explores inspection and repair processes within an Open Queueing Network (OQN) framework. Two primary repair strategies are analyzed: directing defective units to dedicated repair stations and conducting on-site repairs within manufacturing cells. Using GI/G/S queue models and Whitt’s queueing network approximations, the paper evaluates the impact of these strategies on average outgoing quality (AOQ) and operational performance. Key findings include …

A Simulation Of An Input/Output Subsystem Of A Large Scale I.B.M Mainframe Environment, Thomas J. Bregar Jan 1989

A Simulation Of An Input/Output Subsystem Of A Large Scale I.B.M Mainframe Environment, Thomas J. Bregar

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

A large mainframe computing environment consists of three major hardware components: the mainframe computer, the input/output (I/O) subsystem, and the telecommunication network. Because the cost of each of these components can range from one to ten million dollars, care must be taken when configuring each component to maximize resource utilization while minimizing costs. The task is most difficult for the I/O subsystem. The I/O subsystem is comprised of a series of hardware devices that access data stored on magnetic media. This data is transferred to the computer's main memory for use by computer software. These hardware devices are produced in …

The Role Of Unincorporated Enterprises In The Indian Economy, R Vaidyanathan Dec 1988

The Role Of Unincorporated Enterprises In The Indian Economy, R Vaidyanathan

IIMB Management Review

The objective of this paper is to highlight the role of unincorporated
enterprises in the national economy. Most of the studics regarding the nonagricultural
portion of our economy concentrate on the corporate or company sector.
Discussions on saving, taxation, capital formation, etc. also to a large extent pertain
to the corporate sector, consisting of companies which are incorporated under the
Company’s Act of 1956. But the other sector, viz., unincorporated enterprises has
not been studied thoroughly in respect of its role in the national economy. In our
context this should include a study of proprietorships, partnerships, HUFs,
Cooperatives, ie. organisations …

Sas No. 58: Did The Asb Really Listen?, Marshall A. Geiger Dec 1988

Sas No. 58: Did The Asb Really Listen?, Marshall A. Geiger

Accounting Faculty Publications

One thousand-plus letters are a lot of mail. That's how many comments the American Institute of CPAs auditing standards board received when it proposed 10 new standards to help close the expectations gap between what auditors perceive as their responsibility and what the public thinks. Did the ASB really listen to these comment letters before finalizing nine SASs, or did it simply solicit the comments to fulfill the standard-setting, due-process procedures mandated by the AICPA board of directors?

The Strategic Planning Dilemma In American Manufacturing, James Andrew Kiray Sep 1988

The Strategic Planning Dilemma In American Manufacturing, James Andrew Kiray

Theses

The decline of American manufacturing competitiveness is a highly publicized and controversial issue. This publicity has led to a panacea of solutions being offered to this problem. As a result, many conflicting viewpoints have emerged, which have aided in making any solution to this problem extremely difficult. Top executives have been inundated with recommendations for change, causing confusion at all levels of management.

In an effort to define the underlying problems existing within the American strategic planning process, this author has selected current literature which supports his own views, and has expended upon these views.

Once these underlying problems are …

Development Of A Knowledge-Based System For Human Error Analysis, Bang-Chiang Sung Sep 1988

Development Of A Knowledge-Based System For Human Error Analysis, Bang-Chiang Sung

Theses

Human Factors is one of several essential issues in a discussion of system productivity. Its consideration must be included in the design, development, operation, and maintenance of any human-machine system. In order to maximize the system productivity, humans must perform with their maximum possible efficiency. To achieve this, all human-related activities must be evaluated to determine their possible causes of errors and the consequences. Then, if unable to completely remove, the causes of human errors must be minimized.

This thesis integrates a knowledge of expert system into an analysis of human errors. Its objective is to develop a knowledge-based system …

European Manufacturers: The Dangers Of Complacency, Kasra Ferdows, Arnoud De Meyer

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Recent trends in the activities of a sample of European manufacturers are analysed in this paper. The data have been collected through annual surveys in the last five years, and in particular, the results of the 1987 survey (222 responses received in the first trimester of 1987) have been analysed in more depth. The priorities set for the development of varions types of capabilities in manufacturing (related to quality, delivery, flexibility, cost, etc.), and the specific programmes under implementation for improvement of manufacturing performance which are receiving highest attention are described. Through correlation analyses, statisically significant associations between specific improvement …
