A Framework For Mapping And Managing Creativity And Innovation, S Mohan
A Framework For Mapping And Managing Creativity And Innovation, S Mohan
IIMB Management Review
Organisations and individuals live in an era of constant change. Growth and survival are dependent on coping with these trends and changes. Many organisations suffer from increasing costs, stagnating productivity and shrinking profits, mostly due to lack of original thinking by the management and the employees. In today’s business, organisations face new problems, unique opportunities and the unexpected. The corporate management, apart from coping on a reactive basis, must develop sheer power of new innovative ideas. New products and services, effective marketing strategies and new technologies need to be developed using creative ideas.

The purpose of this study was to determine the differences between industrial and municipal executives' practices and perceptions toward the administrative requirements of a water pollution control system as set forth in a National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permit. This was a descriptive study that utilized a two-part attitudinal survey designed to obtain the perceptions of the executives (N = 171) of all major industries and all major municipalities in the State of Tennessee who had direct responsibility for the administrative requirements of an NPDES permitted water pollution control system. Descriptive statistics were used for the analysis of data with …

Managing Expert Systems: A Framework And Case Study, Rob R. Weitz, Arnoud De Meyer
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
This paper addresses the problem of managing the development and implementation of a large expert system in an organization. A traditional systems analysis and design methodology is used as a framework to highlight similarities and differences in managing large scale traditional computer based projects and large expert systems. As a non-technical, prescriptive guide, this article focusses on defining at each stage in the project, the tasks to be accomplished, resources required, impact on the organization, likely benefits and potential problems. The case of a large expert system implemented by a multinational corporation across several European sites is used to clarify …

The Islamic economy is the subject of this thesis, which reviews the basic foundations of this system. The main idea under discussion is the implication of monetary and fiscal policy in an Islamic economy framework. This analysis shows how the positively sloped IS and LM curves can be achieved. These two curves are used to determine the value of national income and expected profit rate. The stability of the system is ensured and the policy effectiveness is studied. This study shows the following results: (1) IS-LM framework can be used to analyze the macroeconomic aspect of Islamic economy. (2) The …

A Multinomial Lattice Option Pricing Methodology For Valuing Risky Ventures: Multiple Sources Of Uncertainty, Bardia Kamrad
Research Reports from the Department of Operations
The methodology for determining the value of a claim whose payoffs depend upon the stochastic prices of other assets is referred to as Contingent Claims Analysis (CCA). This methodology has now become an industry standard for valuation of financial assets such as options, warrants, bonds, convertibles, and a host of other financial derivative securities. In recent years, techniques of Contingent Claims Analysis (CCA) and stochastic control theory have also been used to value risky ventures characterized by significant operating flexibility. While the advantages of these methods over alternative valuation approaches have been well documented, implementation problems have emerged, primarily due …

On Stages Of Knowledge Growth In The Management Sciences, Arnold Reisman, Xiaomei Xu
Research Reports from the Department of Operations
This paper invokes Rostow's theory of economic development, the kinetics of chemical reactions and the principles of technology forecasting to address, by analogy, the stages of knowledge development in Management Science. It shows that different strategies dominate research at the various stages of its development. Lastly it relates the stages to the level of knowledge accumulated and the relative difficulty of teaching/learning the accumulated knowledge.

Communications In Admissions, Miriam Penn
Communications In Admissions, Miriam Penn
Whittier Scholars Program
The overriding goals of every admissions department in every college and university is to attract and recruit the students that are best suited for that school. Every school must define for itself certain things, such as: the characteristics of the most desirable student for that school, what the school has to offer that student, and how the department will project that to the prospective student. Every admissions department must keep in mind at all times that its ultimate goal is to attract students that fit its school and to encourage those students to attend. Communication is vital to achieving this …

Toward Meta Research In Technology Transfer, Liming Zhao, Arnold Reisman
Research Reports from the Department of Operations
Technology Transfer (TT) literature has grown exponentially during the last twenty-five years. As in most emerging fields, the literature is quite disjointed. It is especially so in TT because of the cross-disciplinary nature of the field. Although a number of taxonomies have been proposed, most are by and for a specific discipline, e.g., economics or sociology. This paper offers a taxonomic schema which takes into account each of the streams of TT knowledge and classifies the developments efficiently and effectively.

Lasting Improvements In Manufacturing Performance: In Search Of A New Theory, Kasra Ferdows, Arnoud De Meyer
Lasting Improvements In Manufacturing Performance: In Search Of A New Theory, Kasra Ferdows, Arnoud De Meyer
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Is there a way to avoid trading off one capability for another in manufacturing? The prevailing wisdom says no. But some manufacturers seem to have been able to defy that: compared to their competitors, they have better quality, are more dependable, respond faster to changing market conditions, and in spite of all that, achieve lower costs. How can this be explained? Our aim here is to provide an explanation. We contend that the nature of the trade-offs among manufacturing capabilities is more complex than has been assumed. Depending on the approach taken for developing each capability, the nature of the …

This article describes the strategy behind the ongoing effort in New England to position women for appointment as corporate directors.

Core Component Choices In Single-User Computer Systems : A Home Office User's Perspective, James W. Violette
Master's Theses
The home office is a rapidly growing segment of the business environment. The trend toward two-income families and concerns over quality of life have made the office at home increasingly attractive alternative business style. The evolution of technology during the past ten years has opened up a broad array of choices.
The introduction of the IBM personal computer in the fall of 1981 provided the technological nucleus. Other office products aimed at the individual user such as personal copiers, facsimile machines, smart typewriters, and multi-function telecommunications products have grown around it.
The evolution of personal computer technology has been accelerating …
A Land Development Financial Model, Bruce Saunders
A Land Development Financial Model, Bruce Saunders
Master's Theses
Often the term "real estate industry" is casually used as if sufficient in accurately describing a well defined segment contributing to the GNP. In actuality, real estate is a very large complex industry, involving a variety of corporations, partnerships, trusts, and individuals with different functions and objectives. A comprehensive profile of the industry would include investors, lenders, and government regulators. These players may be involved with a vast array of projects such as undeveloped land, single family and multifamily housing, office building, shopping centers, industrial buildings, hotels and motels, mobile home parks, resorts or recreational complexes. This variety illustrates the …
