Strategic Competitiveness In The 1990s: Challenges And Opportunities For U.S. Executives, Michael A. Hitt, Robert E. Hoskisson, Jeffrey S. Harrison Jan 1991

Strategic Competitiveness In The 1990s: Challenges And Opportunities For U.S. Executives, Michael A. Hitt, Robert E. Hoskisson, Jeffrey S. Harrison

Management Faculty Publications

U.S. firms face a major global competitiveness challenge. Although the problems relate, in part, to differences in the economic structure, history and cultural differences between the U.S. and foreign rivals, these factors may not explain as much of the variance in competitiveness as they did in the past. Competitiveness problems are also linked to a number of strategic factors under the control of managers. Among them are the absorption of managerial energy in mergers and acquisitions, increasing levels of debt, increasing firm size, greater firm diversification, lack of investment in human capital and inappropriate corporate culture.

In response to these …

Effects Of Acquisitions On R&D Inputs And Outputs, Michael A. Hitt, Robert E. Hoskisson, R. Duane Ireland, Jeffrey S. Harrison

Management Faculty Publications

Making acquisitions, although a popular strategy, may not always lead to positive firm performance. Researchers have offered several explanations for this relationship. One is that acquisitions lead to lower investments in R&D and curtail the championing process whereby organization members internally promote new products and processes in firms. The current research found that acquisitions had negative effects on "R&D intensity" and "patent intensity."

Farm Management Memo - Advice To Help Farming Through The Rural Downturn, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia Jan 1991

Farm Management Memo - Advice To Help Farming Through The Rural Downturn, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia

Farm Systems and Economics published reports

Historically, commodity prices cycle between a "boom and a bust" every few years. Farmers are often able to adjust their operations to reduce the impact of a downturn in commodity prices by:

  • Increasing efficiency through reducing or maintaining input costs while maintaining or increasing production levels.

  • Maximising returns through seeking price premiums on commodities (protein, noodle quality, finer wool, increased clean wool yield).

  • Reducing overhead costs

  • Seeking cheaper finance or refinancing costly loans

  • Careful planning and management with a high degree of attention to detail.

  • Seeking advice

Using 4gl Tools In Project-Oriented Courses, Linda Salchenberger Jan 1991

Using 4gl Tools In Project-Oriented Courses, Linda Salchenberger

Management Faculty Research and Publications

The widespread availability of fourth generation languages (4GL's) and CASE (computer-aided software engineering) tools has presented students with the opportunity to design and implement real-world systems as class projects within the span of a one-semester course. The use of these tools during the systems development life cycle is discussed based on experiences with a microcomputer-based system which was developed by students in an upper division MIS class. The methodology used for directing student projects and some particular problems faced when using 4GL's as development tools are addressed.

A Structural Model And Test Of The Antecedents And Outcomes Of Organizational And Professional Commitment, Mary Ann Evans Jan 1991

A Structural Model And Test Of The Antecedents And Outcomes Of Organizational And Professional Commitment, Mary Ann Evans

Dissertations and Theses

The major purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between commitment to one's profession and commitment to one's employer and the role this relationship plays in predicting satisfaction, performance and turnover. In order to accomplish this purpose the antecedents and outcomes of the commitments were modeled and tested using covariance structural modeling techniques. The data source was the 1990 Kaiser Permanente, Northwest Region Employee Survey. The study included a wide range of occupations. The literature is ambiguous about the definition and measurement of professional and organizational commitment. Professional commitment is characterized either as a unidimensional or multidimensional construct …

Manufacturing Automation Protocol Implementation Guide, Richard H. Infantino

Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to provide a starting point for individuals seeking information on the Manufacturing Automation Protocol (MAP) Specification. This thesis is designed to be as comprehensive as possible, yet, still basic enough to be understood by an individual who may not be familiar with computers and networks, and how they function. The intent is to progress gradually from basic networking concepts and characteristics, to defining network requirements, and finally to network design and installation. At the conclusion of the paper is an Organized Method Approach to MAP network design and installation that could serve as a …
