Learning Together: Volunteer/Practitioner Interactions In Effective Communities Of Fundraising Practice, Donald Zeilstra May 2001

Learning Together: Volunteer/Practitioner Interactions In Effective Communities Of Fundraising Practice, Donald Zeilstra

Student Scholarship

Observations of the dynamic interactions of high level volunteers and fundraising practitioners are interpreted as an extended learning process. Two major themes are developed: the actors are involved in reciprocal learning relationships, and learning is stimulated and encouraged by a wide range of behaviors and activities. A conceptual model is developed from the theoretical bases of collective action and situated learning to guide and present this interpretation. Each of the themes of the interpretation is explored for practical implications. Finally, implications for theory are discussed, and a direction for further research is indicated.

How Does The Retail Clerk Make Sense Of His Environment, Tyler L. Watson May 2001

How Does The Retail Clerk Make Sense Of His Environment, Tyler L. Watson

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The retail clerk is a common feature of today's society. However, the role of the retail clerk has been largely overlooked from the sociological perspective. More precisely from the ethnomethodological perspective. Currently most of the body of research on the retail clerk is from the business perspective and sheds little light on what it is like to be a retail clerk. This study was designed to gain access to the other side of the retail scene, that is, the side of the retail clerk. Most Americans are already familiar with the store but do not know how things are experienced …

Integer Approximation Of Real Valued Preference Curves, Richard M. Antoine May 2001

Integer Approximation Of Real Valued Preference Curves, Richard M. Antoine

Theses and Dissertations

A primary challenge of the AFIT Mission Resource Value Assessment Tool is to approximate a given preference curve with integer valued mission ready resources. This thesis evaluated four candidate methods of accomplishing this approximation. The thesis evaluated the implementation of the integer estimation approximation from a purely mathematical perspective. The models were measured against six quality and error measurement standards: convergence on an endpoint, convergence on any interior integer points, characterization of the overall error between the sequence of integer coordinates and the real valued linear function and characterization of the error in each individual dimension of the problem space. …

More Than Directing Money: Theories In Use For Helping Distressed Communities As Practiced By Independent Foundations, Sally Austen Tom May 2001

More Than Directing Money: Theories In Use For Helping Distressed Communities As Practiced By Independent Foundations, Sally Austen Tom

Student Scholarship

This research began with the two premises. The first is that stronger, healthier, more vibrant communities more effectively support pregnant women, their infants and the families. The second premise is that private independent foundations in the United States are engaged in a multitude of activities designed to help distressed communities and have significant tacit knowledge about how to do this work. I reviewed the literature on the concept of theories in use and discovered that the literature asserted that they exist and that they can be found through a dialogical interview process. I posited that discourse analysis of categories of …

A Study Of The Impact Of Ohio's Instructional Support Funding Process On Institutional Behavior At Two-Year Colleges, Morries W. Beverage Jr.

Student Scholarship

This study examines the impact that Ohio's higher education instructional support funding process has on decision-making at two-year colleges. In Ohio, instructional support subsidizes credit (degree-eligible) but not non-credit instruction. The study methodology included six colleges selected on the basis of how active or inactive they were in the provision of job-related non-credit training against their predicted activity. The colleges selected represent the three relatively most and least active institutions. Interviews were conducted at the six colleges with the President, Chief Academic Officer, Chief Fiscal Officer and Chief Non-Credit Instruction Officer. The study found evidence of influence from the instructional …

The Contribution And Status Of Women Inside Directors In Fortune 1000 Companies, Deborah Dahlen Zelechowski May 2001

The Contribution And Status Of Women Inside Directors In Fortune 1000 Companies, Deborah Dahlen Zelechowski

Student Scholarship

My interest in women and corporate boards evolved from a general desire for more information on boards. Being the most senior woman executive in an educations institution, there appeared to be no senior individuals available to assume a role on our board and to illustrate the possible role women executives could play. During my initial research it became obvious there were very few senior women executives who had ascended to positions on their organization's corporate board. there was also very little known about women inside directors, giving me a tremendous opportunity to begin to answer numerous questions. My grand tour …

Consulting Demons : Inside The Unscrupulotls World Of Global Corporate Consulting By Lewis Pinault, New York, Harper Business, 2000, Price : $26; Rs 940., Rishikesha T Krishnan

IIMB Management Review

This irreverent and perhaps slightly exaggerated account of the world of global consulting has behind it some sharp insights into a highly sought-after industry. Having worked in a range of consulting firms - from the strategy- and idea-driven Boston Consulting Group (BCG) to the more conservative and thorough Coopers & Lybrand (now Price Waterhouse Coopers) -Lewis Pinault has a range of experiences to offer and he does so in an engaging and easy-to-read manner. The book reads like a thriller, but every chapter ends with a section titled ' consulting demonology in which the author distil the learnings from his …

Variations In Organization Science : In Honor Of Donald T Campbell Edited By Joel A C Baum And Bill Mckelvey, Sage, 1999, Pp 452, Price: $ 39. 95., Abhoy K Ojha

IIMB Management Review

Organisation science, as a field of study, is relatively young. Although the study of human behaviour has a long history, and studies examining human behaviour in organisations were prevalent in the early twentieth century, the field as we know it today has emerged after World War II, particularly during the 1960s. As a result, like any other discipline in its early stages of evolution, organisation science has many competing paradigms jostling for dominance. Organisational ecology (also known as population ecology) is one of the few paradigms that have had a significant influence on the knowledge of organisations.

Organisational Orchestra : Structures And Processes Interface, Neelesh Hundekari Mar 2001

Organisational Orchestra : Structures And Processes Interface, Neelesh Hundekari

IIMB Management Review

Organisational structures do not exist in isolation. They presume, depend on, and influence several organisational variables. These include processes (communication, goal setting, conflict resolution, socialisation, leadership building, strategic planning, supporting, team working), behaviour, values, rituals, climate, authority (with which the role holders are imbued) and people (competence, confidence, interpersonal skills, leadership, perceptions about
others). Structure designers tend to ignore this vital reciprocal relationship quite often, leading to ineffective structures and unhappy human beings. An attempt has been made in this article to map the relationship between
organisational structures and processes.

Analysis And Evaluation Of The Macroscopic Organizational Structure Of Red Horse, Lance D. Clark Mar 2001

Analysis And Evaluation Of The Macroscopic Organizational Structure Of Red Horse, Lance D. Clark

Theses and Dissertations

The primary contingency engineering capability within the United States Air Force is provided by Rapid Engineer Deployable, Heavy Operations Readiness Squadron, Engineer (RED HORSE). This thesis examines the macroscopic organizational structure of RED HORSE; that is, the manner in which RED HORSE resources (personnel and equipment) are organized collectively, above the unit (squadron or flight) level. It builds on the findings of the Air Combat Command - sponsored RED HORSE 2010 Strategic Study, and focuses on issues of geographic location and chain of command above the unit level, as the study found these two topics were found to be vital …

Predicting Software Development Cost For Command And Control Systems, Anthony W. Fife Mar 2001

Predicting Software Development Cost For Command And Control Systems, Anthony W. Fife

Theses and Dissertations

In the past, the Department of Defense (DoD) has relied upon commercial software estimating tools. However, these tools are somewhat unreliable when it comes to estimating military systems, particularly Command and Control Systems. The purpose of this study was to develop a parametric model using linear regression to estimate software development costs for DoD Command and Control systems. The developed model is unique in a few ways. First, the model is derived from Department of Defense command and control data. Second, while traditional models require volumes of variables to create estimates, the developed model only requires a few key variables …

Research Summary 6: Analytical Procedures And Audit Planning Decisions, Steven M. Glover, James Jiambalvo, Jane Kennedy Feb 2001

Research Summary 6: Analytical Procedures And Audit Planning Decisions, Steven M. Glover, James Jiambalvo, Jane Kennedy

Faculty Publications

Auditors perform analytical procedures in planning the nature, timing and extent of testing. Significant fluctuations between the current year’s unaudited data and expected results signal an increased risk of material error and help auditors focus their planned tests on high-risk areas. This study examined auditors’ decisions to revise preliminary audit plans after analytical procedures performed during planning revealed significant, unexpected fluctuations. Specifically we examined whether the extent of corroboration for management’s explanation for the fluctuation and the presence of an explicit incentive for management to misstate the financial statements influenced auditors’ decisions to revise their audit plans.

Developing An Environmental Management System A Practical Guidebook For Agricultural Businesses, Lucy Taylor Feb 2001

Developing An Environmental Management System A Practical Guidebook For Agricultural Businesses, Lucy Taylor

Natural resources published reports

An environmental management system is a tool that many businesses use to improve their environmental performance. Having an environmental management system enables a business to identify and improve management of their significant environmental impacts.

Environmental management systems work to minimise environmental impacts by following a standard 'plan-do-check-improve' management framework. This framework focuses on identifying significant environmental impacts, setting performance targets, establishing means of achieving targets and maintaining sufficient records to show that targets have been reached. Environmental management systems can assist agricultural businesses in:

* improving resource management

* building public confidence in the environmental management of agriculture

* increasing …

A Note On The Paper “Resource-Constrained Project Scheduling: Notation, Classification, Models And Methods” By Brucker Et Al., Willy Herroelen, Erik Demeulemeester, Bert De Reyck Feb 2001

A Note On The Paper “Resource-Constrained Project Scheduling: Notation, Classification, Models And Methods” By Brucker Et Al., Willy Herroelen, Erik Demeulemeester, Bert De Reyck

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The great variety of project scheduling problems studied in the ever growing literature motivated the recent development of classification schemes. In a recent paper (European Journal of Operational Research 112 (1999) 3–41), Brucker et al. make the claim that, so far, no classification scheme exists which is compatible with what is commonly accepted in machine scheduling and introduce a new classification. In this note, we critically review major shortcomings of the suggested scheme which place heavy limitations on its potential use.
