The importance of small-scale industries in promoting industrialization and economic growth has been recognized globally. This paper discusses the concepts and issues that are associated with the financing and promoting of small scale industries. Nigeria is blessed with vast natural resources, including oil, gas and solid minerals, already confirmed to exist in commercial quantities. Small-scale industries development can be used for achieving the objectives of the poverty alleviation programme of the Government, given that they are highly labour intensive. Nigeria is blessed with vast natural resources, including oil, gas and solid minerals, already confirmed to exist in commercial quantities. She …

The Role Of Development Finance Institutions (Dfis) In The Financing Of Small-Scale Industries (Ssis)., O. E. Essien

Bullion

The post-independence Nigerian government adopted the import-substitution large-scale industrialisation strategy to accelerate the country's industrial development. Industrial output as well as industry's contribution to the gross domestic product (GDP) declined in the face of the strong national aspiration for the restructuring of the economy and reduction of the dependence on petroleum. Small and medium scale industries have since become the focus of national industrial policy. ln order to put our discussion into proper perspective, we need to know what we mean by SSls in the Nigerian context. The following are the current official definitions of industrial enterprises adopted by the …

Sitting On Top Of The World; An Ethnography Of Elite Flyers Improving Service Recovery Cost - Effectiveness In A World Of Air Traffic Delays, Leonard Lane

Student Scholarship

The question this study set out to answer was: what are the drivers of customer satisfaction and loyalty for “elite” airline flyers, in face of the unprecedented decline over the last three years (as indicated by the number of flight delays and cancellations) in the most tangible aspects of customer service. I asked this question because I wanted to find out how the flyer’s sense of elitism and loyaltytotheairlinecouldbemaintainedinthefaceofterribleservicedeliveredbytheairlines. This knowledge would be important for airlines to know inasmuch as this elite group is a major segment of the 2% of an airline’s passengers that contribute 70% of the airline’s …

This study was an investigation of the projected lead time and the actual lead time for a part manufactured at Tri-Industries Inc., Terre Haute, Indiana. The research was focused on a single part produced in Tri-Industries. The problem was that there is a difference in the projected lead time and the actual lead time of the part under investigation. The actual lead time was longer than projected lead time, which resulted in the company being delinquent in customer delivery. This investigation was conducted to find out the source for customer delinquency for a single part in Tri-Industries. The conclusion was …

Lessons In Ethical Capital Asset Management: The Challenges Of A Local School Board, Susan Mctiernan Jul 2001

Lessons In Ethical Capital Asset Management: The Challenges Of A Local School Board, Susan Mctiernan

Student Scholarship

The work presented here actually had its genesis in the fall of 2000 when I began regular observations of the local school board as it attempted to resolve a major conflict that involved not just the board, but a variety of its stakeholder groups. My interest in this board's dilemma was informed by previous personal service on various boards and the challenges that were faced by my colleagues and me in dealing with various stakeholders. I sought to sort out questions associated with the involvement of stakeholders and the board and to answer those that went to whether there was …

Student Scholarship

This paper addresses the effect on customer service satisfaction of primary language differences between service personnel and customers in retail store environments. This study was conducted using ethnographic research methods in five different retail store environments where service personnel were Spanish-speaking and customers English- speaking. The results of the study suggest that primary language differences in the service dyad can result in impaired service and customer dissatisfaction. A Smile And A Handshake Are Not Enough: Moving Toward The Need, Patricia J. Mintz

Student Scholarship

As an undergraduate in 1966, I studied the Fortran and Cobol programming languages on a mainframe computer. At that time, I could not have predicted the personal computer on the desktop. In 1982, we took the plunge and bought an Apple IIe personal computer for use in our home and for the development of my mathematics teaching materials. I was amazed by the power and ability of 64K of memory in that first Apple computer. Over the past eighteen years, the development of powerful personal computers has changed the daily lives of many people in their home and in their …

The elements of a successful training programme are discussed along with how the process can be adapted by colleges and universities. The distinction between training and education is explained, with a discussion of why 'soft skills' training initiatives are often less effective than skills-based approaches. The critical role of the training coordinator in facilitating a programme is …

Studies On The Formation Of Dna-Cationic Lipid Composite Films And Dna Hybridization In The Composites, Murali Sastry, Vidya Ramakrishnan, Mrunalini Pattarkine, Krishna N. Ganesh May 2001

Studies On The Formation Of Dna-Cationic Lipid Composite Films And Dna Hybridization In The Composites, Murali Sastry, Vidya Ramakrishnan, Mrunalini Pattarkine, Krishna N. Ganesh

Faculty Works

The formation of composite films of double-stranded DNA and cationic lipid molecules (octadecylamine, ODA) and the hybridization of complementary single-stranded DNA molecules in such composite films are demonstrated. The immobilization of DNA is accomplished by simple immersion of a thermally evaporated ODA film in the DNA solution at close to physiological pH. The entrapment of the DNA molecules in the cationic lipid film is dominated by attractive electrostatic interaction between the negatively charged phosphate backbone of the DNA molecules and the protonated amine molecules in the thermally evaporated film and has been quantified using quartz crystal microgravimetry (QCM). Fluorescence studies …
