Punishment: Benefits, Risks, And Alternatives In A Business Setting, Chris Vaden Oct 2004

Punishment: Benefits, Risks, And Alternatives In A Business Setting, Chris Vaden

Senior Honors Theses

Punishment is utilized in many settings in the world today, but it is continually getting more negative responses for its use in the workplace. Punishment's main use is to decrease the occurrence of a behavior that is undesirable. In a business setting, this would most likely be a behavior that is a violation of policy or unsatisfactory work performance. A comparison of the positive aspects of punishment with its negative features, by utilizing information provided by scholarly journals and websites along with a survey of 31 employees, has yielded the results that there may be a better alternative to punishment.

Designing And Implementing A Blended Learning Approach To Executive Scm Education: A Case Study From Ireland, John Mee, Edward Sweeney

Conference papers

The National Institute for Transport and Logistics (NITL) is Ireland’s centre of excellence for supply chain management (SCM). As part of its mission to promote the development of supply chain expertise in Irish business, it designs and delivers executive modular learning programmes. In 2004, as part of a drive to create more flexible learning opportunities for course participants, NITL designed and implemented an eLearning programme, which involved converting traditionally tutored modules to online modules. This paper describes the rationale behind this initiative and the significance of technology as an enabling tool for executive education, as well as detailing the design …

End-Of-Life Decision-Making Through Advanced Directives And Pallative Care, Beth Lada Morse Sep 2004

End-Of-Life Decision-Making Through Advanced Directives And Pallative Care, Beth Lada Morse

Student Scholarship

There are many socio-cultural and economic factors that shape discussions about treatment options for terminally ill patients. These factors include access to life prolonging medical options, societal priorities regarding the allocation of limited health care resources, cost constraints of payers and societal consensus that patient autonomy underpins life-sustaining treatment decisions. The focus of this study is primarily directed to issues of end-of-life care decisions as they relate to advance directives (AD) and palliative care. It is argued that when death is expected or foreseeable, that advance care planning has value for the individual, family, organization and community. It is debatable …

From 3lsp (Third Party Logistics Service Provider) To 4lsp (Fourth Party Logistics Service Provider). A Case Study From Ireland, John Mee, Edward Sweeney

Conference papers

Increased competition, geographically expanded marketplaces, technology replication and an
ever discerning consumer base, are reasons why companies need to regularly reappraise
their competencies in terms of activities and functions they perform themselves. Where viable
alternatives exist, companies should consider outsourcing of non-core activities and functions.
Within SCM (Supply Chain Management) it could be preferable if a “one stop shop” existed
for companies seeking to outsource functions identified as non-core. “Traditionally” structured
LSP’s who have concentrated their service offer around providing warehousing and transport
activities are potentially at a crossroads – clients and potential clients requiring “new” services
which could increase …

B2b E-Marketplace In The Procurement Supply Chain Of Airlines: A Strategic Direction For The Future?, Claudia-Maria Wagner, Austin Smyth, Edward Sweeney

Conference papers

With the airline industry experiencing a global economic downturn, B2B e-Business is
becoming more and more the focus of airlines’ strategies. More recently, airlines have studied
intensively the potential of joint-procurement possibilities and have taken measures in creating
consortia-led B2B e-Marketplaces as mediators for aggregating demand and to facilitate transactions.
In academic literature, limited academic research has been undertaken in exploring the value creation of B2B e-Marketplace models in the aviation industry. The aim is to conduct a theoretical analysis to explore whether or not e-Marketplaces have the potential to add value to procurement in the aviation industry. The research …

When And How Trustworthiness Matters: Knowledge Transfer And The Moderating Effect Of Causal Ambiguity, Robert J. Jensen, Gabriel Szulanski, Rossella Cappetta Sep 2004

When And How Trustworthiness Matters: Knowledge Transfer And The Moderating Effect Of Causal Ambiguity, Robert J. Jensen, Gabriel Szulanski, Rossella Cappetta

Faculty Publications

The recognition that better use of existing internal knowledge could enhance survival chances or organizations has spawned substantial interest in the transferability of routinized, experiential learning to additional settings within the organization Previous research has established that trustworthiness of the source enhances such knowledge transfer. More recent work, however, suggests that this may not always be the case. Yet, little systematic attention has been paid to moderating conditions. The major purpose of this paper is to identify a moderator, causal ambiguity, which delineates the conditions as to when and how a recipient's perception of the trustworthiness of a source affects …

Incentives For Pragmatic Collaborations: Factors For A Win-Win-Win Scenario For Managers, Firms And The Automotive Product Development Industry, Surendra S. Khambete Sep 2004

Incentives For Pragmatic Collaborations: Factors For A Win-Win-Win Scenario For Managers, Firms And The Automotive Product Development Industry, Surendra S. Khambete

Student Scholarship

Global automotive supply chains comprise of an intricate network of suppliers, brokers, manufacturers and customers. Within the industry structure and sometimes within automotive product development programs these firms could be competitors, customers, suppliers or partners at the same time. Firms are revisiting their non-core businesses and outsourcing to a set of strategic suppliers that help them be competitive. The players in the supply chain rarely cater to only one customer and hence it is important to develop a secure network when you know that your customers and suppliers will also be interacting with your competition. Developing this secure network involves …

A Social Exchange Model Of Subordinate's Trust In Supervisors, Wei Hua Sep 2004

A Social Exchange Model Of Subordinate's Trust In Supervisors, Wei Hua

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This study demonstrates how the subordinate’s defensiveness predicts perception of managerial behaviors, which in turn leads to trust in supervisors. From a social information processing perspective, defensiveness, the affective reaction to uncertainty and vulnerability, serves as the frame subordinates use to decode and evaluate managerial behaviors. Trust in supervisors is anchored in this perception. A two-group analysis in Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) is used to test this model by a Chinese and a US sample

The Role Of Supply Chain Management In Irish Enterprise Strategy Development: A Three-Dimensional Approach, Ciaran Finn, Edward Sweeney

Conference papers

The Irish economy has grown strongly in recent years. This, combined with other factors in the
international trading environment, has sharpened the focus on the need for innovative strategies at a
national level which can contribute positively from an enterprise strategy development perspective. As
traditional manufacturing activity has migrated to lower labour cost economies questions have been
raised concerning the role of supply chain management (SCM) in the evolving Irish business
environment. This paper describes some of the main drivers in terms of both SCM and the changing economic and business environment. It goes on to propose a three-dimensional approach …

Towards A Conceptual Framework Of Electronic Purchasing Consortia, Bernd Huber, Edward Sweeney, Austin Smyth Sep 2004

Towards A Conceptual Framework Of Electronic Purchasing Consortia, Bernd Huber, Edward Sweeney, Austin Smyth

Conference papers

In supply chain management literature, there has been little empirical research on consortium
purchasing focusing on a detailed analysis of information and communication (ICT) based
procurement strategies. Based on the exploration of academic literature and two surveys among
purchasing organisations as well as e-Marketplaces / procurement service providers (PSPs) in the
automotive and electronics industry sectors, the research methodology assesses the overall
statement: ‘Effective participation in electronic purchasing consortia (EPC) has the potential to
enhance competitive advantage. Implementation requires a clear and detailed understanding of the
major process structures and drivers, based upon the technology-organisation-environment
framework’. Key factors and structures …

The two types of crops analysed are annual crops (cucurbits, field crops) and perennial crops (mangoes, bananas, and red fleshed grapefruit).

The analyses are prepared as guides of likely cost types and may not relate to individual growers. There is a wide range of fruit production systems, management techniques, varieties and market options making for a wide variation …

Rethinking The Differential In Precautionary Savings Between Blacks And Whites, Benjamin K. Ofili Aug 2004

Rethinking The Differential In Precautionary Savings Between Blacks And Whites, Benjamin K. Ofili

Student Scholarship

This study investigates the differences in precautionary savings between black and white Americans using the theories of reasoned action and individualism and collectivism. A sample size of 229 blacks and 397 whites for a total of 626 participated in the survey. This study finds that the reason for the difference in precautionary savings between blacks and whites is due to the influence of individualism and collectivism, which affects the saving decisions of the groups. Subjective norm and attitude affects saving behavior regardless of race. Behavioral intent mediates the effects of attitude and subjective norm toward saving behavior, indicating a favorable …

Student Scholarship

A Concept Paper presented on the regulatory reforms which cover a wide range of ideas and policies, including privatization, liberalization, competition, and the establishment of independent regulatory regimes. The paper focuses on two aspects of decision making: (1) the types of interests and values that are regularly considered in shaping privatization decisions, whether they be related to various development goals, social goals, external considerations, or intangible factors; (2) the political-economic aspect, namely, the institutional features of any system that give preference, weight, or force to any particular argument, recommendation, or claim. Item two has been particularly under-attended in prior research. …

How Corporate Culture Impacts Unethical Distortion Of Financial Numbers, Joseph F. Castellano, Kenneth Y. Rosenzweig, Harper A. Roehm

Accounting Faculty Publications

The recent accounting scandals have highlighted the critical role that investor confidence in the accuracy and lack of distortion of accounting data plays in the health of capital markets and, indeed, the whole economy. The legal and moral culpability of top-level company managers (as well as auditors) is an issue that will be addressed by the nation in the coming months. Whether or not legal sanctions are imposed on managers, it would be well to examine some of the reasons managers may feel compelled to distort accounting numbers as well as engage in other actions that damage the interests of …
