Social Entrepreneurship: Scaling Social Impact, David A. Sherman

Student Scholarship

This paper presents a conceptual model and research questions for qualitative research of pattern-changing social entrepreneurs who catalyze social transformations by introducing new paradigms at critical leverage points. The research will be conducted during the summer of 2005. The objective of the research is to understand the factors that enable successful pattern-changing social entrepreneurs in the nonprofit sector to scale their social impact. The results of the qualitative research will be used to inform the design of quantitative research to be conducted during 2006. The dependent variables or outputs of interest center around three concepts: changes in scale, social impact …

The Role Of Inferential Accuracy In Performance Rating Accuracy: A Field Study Of Teacher Performance Appraisal, Cynthia L. Cooper Apr 2005

The Role Of Inferential Accuracy In Performance Rating Accuracy: A Field Study Of Teacher Performance Appraisal, Cynthia L. Cooper

Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Management

This study first assessed the accuracy of performance appraisal ratings of high school teachers in comparison to the achievement of their students as measured by Virginia's Standard of Learning (SOL) tests. The overall performance rating scores of 145 teachers were compared to the pass rates of their students on SOL end-of-course tests. The rating sub-scores in each of four domains of performance were also compared to the SOL pass rates.

The study then tested the influence of Inferential Accuracy, a model proposed by Jackson (1972), on rating accuracy overall and of individual raters in the study. Inferential Accuracy is comprised …

The Role Of Interfunctional Market Orientation In New Product Program Success: An Exploratory Empirical Analysis, George Grady Gresham Apr 2005

The Role Of Interfunctional Market Orientation In New Product Program Success: An Exploratory Empirical Analysis, George Grady Gresham

Theses and Dissertations in Business Administration

A central tenet of the market orientation construct is the need for virtually all departments, not just the marketing department, to participate in gathering, disseminating and responding to market intelligence. Previous academic research provides empirical support for a positive relationship between market orientation and superior business performance. Superior business performance, for many firms, depends upon a continuous stream of new products emerging from their product development programs, yet few studies have demonstrated the link between market orientation and new product development program success. This dissertation conceptualizes market orientation below the strategic business level as interfunctional market orientation (IFMO) for cross-functional …

Cognition And International Entrepreneurship: Implications For Research On International Opportunity Recognition And Exploitation, Shaker A. Zahra, Juha Santeri Korri, Jifeng Yu Apr 2005

Cognition And International Entrepreneurship: Implications For Research On International Opportunity Recognition And Exploitation, Shaker A. Zahra, Juha Santeri Korri, Jifeng Yu

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

International entrepreneurship (IE) research has grown rapidly, encompassing many industries and world regions. Past IE research has examined the macro, industry and firm-specific variables that lead to companies’ early internationalization and its financial and non-financial outcomes. Most prior IE research has been correlational in focus and static in design. Focusing on early internationalization, we propose that a significant shift can occur in IE research by applying a cognitive perspective and examining how entrepreneurs recognize and exploit opportunities in international markets. A cognitive approach will allow researchers to probe entrepreneurs’ motivations to internationalize and capture their mental models. The article highlights …

Social Change - Making The Improbable Possible Through Collaboration. The Effectiveness Of Ngo Collaboration Arrangements In South Africa Tackling Hiv/Aids, Jane Cooke-Lauder Apr 2005

Social Change - Making The Improbable Possible Through Collaboration. The Effectiveness Of Ngo Collaboration Arrangements In South Africa Tackling Hiv/Aids, Jane Cooke-Lauder

Student Scholarship

HIV/AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa has reached pandemic proportions, with an adult prevalence rate of 8.4%. Of the 30 million African people infected with AIDS at the end of 2002, 58% were women. The economic impact is devastating as is the effect on society and families as measured by reduced life expectancy, family income, and agricultural and industrial efficiency. While funding and the number of aid organizations (including non-government organizations [NGOs]) operating in Africa have increased exponentially, their effectiveness is being debated. Worldwide, a trend is discernible for organizations from a range of disciplines and sectors to work together in tackling …

Change Leader Career Development: The Leveraging Of Social Networks In Planned Organizational Change, Zara F. Larsen Apr 2005

Change Leader Career Development: The Leveraging Of Social Networks In Planned Organizational Change, Zara F. Larsen

Student Scholarship

This research studies the extent to which a change leader is embedded in and leverages internal and external social networks to contribute to favorable project outcome\, influencing his or her career development upon completion of the change initiative. A conceptual framework will be presented to explore the premise that the effectiveness of the leader in implementing planned change is based on successful access to\, development and leveraging of social networks- the often informal structure of relationships among organizational members that provide invaluable resources such as information\, power\, and trust between individuals and groups. Is "Culture Clash" In A Merger Or Acquisition Well Modeled As A Managerial Prisoner's Dilemma?, Todd Creasey Apr 2005

Is "Culture Clash" In A Merger Or Acquisition Well Modeled As A Managerial Prisoner's Dilemma?, Todd Creasey

Student Scholarship

Many mergers and acquisitions have proven successful due to their additional shareholder value creation, combined synergies in the research and development arena or improved consumer marketing of related products. This paper seeks to explain a primary cause of less successful mergers or acquisitions (M/A) through the prism of a multi-scale, iterative, Prisoner’s Dilemma taking place between department managers. The paper first presents the theory of the firm and its attempts to explain why companies merge and the sources of their subsequent success or failure brought on by M/A activity. Aspects of “Coping Theory,” “Resource (conservation) Theory,” and “Social Comparison Theory” …

The Effect Of Term Limits And Professionalization On State Legislative Performance, Susan B. Waters Apr 2005

The Effect Of Term Limits And Professionalization On State Legislative Performance, Susan B. Waters

Student Scholarship

This paper examines the effects of term limits and state legislative professionalization on the performance of state legislatures in the United States by analyzing two key measures of performance: bond ratings and the ability of the states to adopt their budgets on time. All fifty states are included in the study, although some states do not have general obligation debt, and some states do not adopt their budgets as a whole but rather in multiple bills, making them ineligible for testing. Both professionalization and term limits increase the odds of a lower bond rating at a significance level of .05 …

Transformational Leadership Development In Adolescent Youth: Authoritative Parenting, And The Mediating Effect Of Psychological Autonomy And Mastery Orientation, Franklin T. Kudo Apr 2005

Transformational Leadership Development In Adolescent Youth: Authoritative Parenting, And The Mediating Effect Of Psychological Autonomy And Mastery Orientation, Franklin T. Kudo

Student Scholarship

This is an empirical research study exploring how adolescent youth can develop into transformational leaders. It investigates the question whether adolescent children through proper parenting practices develop specific leadership capabilities. It is argued that certain parent-child interactions promote adolescent psychological autonomy and mastery-orientation, and that these interactions lead to the development of leadership qualities similar to those found in the literature of the adult transformational leader. Through the use of specific measurement survey instruments, data from adolescent boys and a few girls was collected and analyzed. The results obtained help explain the possible interactions between parenting and leadership development in …

Informal Influences In The Process Of Idiq Contractor Selection For Task Award, Jason E. Blevins Mar 2005

Informal Influences In The Process Of Idiq Contractor Selection For Task Award, Jason E. Blevins

Theses and Dissertations

The selection of a contractor for task award using the Indefinite Delivery Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) contract often involves dynamics and relationships that are difficult to understand. There are unanswered questions that relate to how government agents define "best value" to the government. The selection decisions often differ between government agents. The government streamlined the acquisition process by creating the multiple award IDIQ contract. Government agents are relied upon to make sound business judgments in determining which contractor represents the best value to the government. Informal influences can impact the determination of the final selection of a contractor. This thesis attempts …

On ‘‘Investment Decisions In The Theory Of Finance: Some Antinomies And Inconsistencies’’, Bert De Reyck Mar 2005

On ‘‘Investment Decisions In The Theory Of Finance: Some Antinomies And Inconsistencies’’, Bert De Reyck

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In the paper “Investment Decisions in the Theory of Finance: Some antinomies and inconsistencies”, Magni [Eur. J. Operat. Res. 137 (2002) 206] shows that using the net present value rule for making investment decisions can lead to inconsistencies and antinomies. The author claims that the so-called equivalent-risk tenet of finance, whereby an investor needs to compare an investment opportunity with an asset of equivalent risk, is impossible to implement. In this paper, we show that the main thesis of this paper is incorrect, and that finance theory, when applied correctly, can be used to value investment projects by comparing assets …

Program Management: A Comprehensive Overview Of The Discipline, Mitchell L. Springer Feb 2005

Program Management: A Comprehensive Overview Of The Discipline, Mitchell L. Springer

Purdue University Press Books

Although many might argue that program management is magic or luck, and at times this might be the case, Springer instead describes program management as both an art and a science. The art of program management is addressed through the numerous qualitative aspects of dealing with people, working in teams, understanding what motivates people, and gaining an understanding how we manage. The quantitative side is composed of a process with multiple activities with clear-cut outcomes. The integration of the multiple activities and outcomes provides a powerful framework for successfully planning a program. Program Management: A Comprehensive Overview of the Discipline, …

Integrated Fisheries Management Report Western Rock Lobster Resource., Department Of Fisheries

Fisheries Management Papers

This report is the first in a series of Integrated Fisheries Management (IFM) reports required under the 2004 Government Policy on IFM. Under this policy, the Executive Director of Fisheries is required to approve a sustainability report for each fishery, which includes a clear statement on the harvest level. The sustainable harvest level is that total catch, or catch range, that is to be allocated among the various user groups identified for that particular fishery. These IFM reports will assist in the process of allocating explicit shares in the use of Western Australia’s fish resources. They do not establish the …

With the rapid growth, acceptance and uses of the Internet for financial transactions, understanding the consumer decision process to pay for goods or settle obligations online has become important in the public and private sectors alike. Online payment applications have become a commonly offered alternative to traditional methods (phone, mail, cash), with merchants and government agencies actively encouraging consumers to make the switch. The objective of this study was to understand the factors that explain the consumers decision process to pay online, and also to understand the differences in the rapid adoption of e-Commerce, and, by comparison, slower adoption of …

Garbage-In, Garbage-Out: Item Generation As A Threat To Construct Validity, Terri A. Scandura Phd, Lucy R. Ford

Management Faculty Articles and Papers

Item generation has received only cursory attention in the research literature, despite the fact that it seems obvious that poorly written items will result in poor psychometric properties of measures. In this paper, we review the literature on item generation, develop a typology of threats to construct validity, and evaluate five commonly used
organizational research measures with respect to typology. Our results demonstrate that the sampled measures have significant problems that may represent threats to construct validity. recommendations for improved item generation practice are offered.
