Our research on theft and fraud has taught us three important lessons about conflicts of interest: first, they are much more prevalent than one would expect, second, they are much more serious than one might think, and third, some of them can’t be eliminated.

Conceptual Issues On Savings In Nigeria., A. J. Adam, A. V. Agba Sep 2006

Conceptual Issues On Savings In Nigeria., A. J. Adam, A. V. Agba

Bullion

It is often held that capital accumulation is necessary and sufficient condition for growth and capital accumulation is almost synonymous with saving, hence the route to growth is then one of raising savings and smoothing consumption (Deaton, 1991). Savings is one of the key relevant macroeconomic variables in any economy. Its impact on the rate of capital accumulation, productivity and the degree of dependency of a nation on foreign capital and foreign ownership of domestic assets cannot be overemphasised. This paper reviews conceptual issues on savings behaviour in Nigeria. It also provided an analysis of the factors that may have …

Six Levels Of Financial Knowledge, George E. Manners Jr. Aug 2006

Six Levels Of Financial Knowledge, George E. Manners Jr.

Faculty Articles

With the appropriate framework to shape financial knowledge, the management accounting function should become an organization's principal decision-support platform. The framework consists of six levels of financial knowledge, and the word "financial" is most operative here. The Level 1 knowledge base connects a business to the outside world. When you have output volume and variable cost per output unit, you have the basis for Level 2 vocabulary. When a business transitions to Level 3, it has learned that return on assets must be employed as the enterprise's guiding profitability gauge. There is a very distinct increment in knowledge when moving …

Graduate Business Education And Perceptions Of Employment Opportunities, Frederick Robert Buchanan Aug 2006

Graduate Business Education And Perceptions Of Employment Opportunities, Frederick Robert Buchanan

Business Administration Dissertations - Archive

The value of master's level business education has been previously studied primarily through cost/benefit analysis, generally confirming that MBAs make more money. This study addresses the large question of the value of business master's education by carving out a small area of interest. It looks at the relationship of individual differences to perceptions of organizational mobility, which is a precursor to voluntary turnover. Three research questions are investigated. The first question is the relationship of cognitive ability to perceived organizational mobility. Cognitive ability was not seen by itself to be significantly related to perceived organizational mobility. In conjunction with high …

Defined Benefit Pensions: Funding And Asset Allocation Choices, Melissa Susan Lind Aug 2006

Defined Benefit Pensions: Funding And Asset Allocation Choices, Melissa Susan Lind

Business Administration Dissertations - Archive

Because of their large size, defined benefit pension plans are an important component of U.S. corporate finances and capital markets. The value of pension plans comprises a sizable portion of the sponsoring firm's assets and impacts the sponsoring firm's profitability and risk. Plan funding status has a direct impact on firm earnings. Corporate sponsors of overfunded plans may reduce or eliminate cash contributions to the plan, improving earnings. In contrast, underfunded plans require large expedited contributions that lower earnings. Plan investment choices may magnify the effect of funding on earnings when markets are volatile and managers invest a greater portion …

Determinants Of Adverse Usage Of Information Systems Assets: A Study Of Antecedents Of Is Exploit In Organizations, Aakash Taneja Aug 2006

Determinants Of Adverse Usage Of Information Systems Assets: A Study Of Antecedents Of Is Exploit In Organizations, Aakash Taneja

Business Administration Dissertations - Archive

Information systems assets are vital to the functioning and survival of organizations. Therefore, organizations expend many resources in protecting these assets. Organizations spent resources on technologies, policies, procedures, guidelines, user awareness, education, training and other protection mechanisms. Advancing technology and complexity of organizations make the protection of these assets a continuing challenge. Studies show that in spite of these efforts, the main reason for security failures in organizations is due to human behavior (Stanton et al. 2004). This study speaks for an enhanced behavioral model for the adverse usage of IS assets and addresses the factors that influence these behaviors. …

Language Of Innovation: Alignment Of Boundary Objects, Humayun Rashid

Student Scholarship

The role of language in communication has been part of most social science and management disciplines for decades; but in the world of practice, large organizations still struggle with implementing major innovations or changes due to communication barriers between the diverse participants. The lack of acceptance and the challenges of change are especially characteristic of information technology-enabled business transformations that typically involve intense interactions between business executive/managers and information technology (IT) staff. When these diverse groups interact to achieve an over-arching company objective, communication becomes a major organizational challenge. During my discussions with executives over the years in the world …

An Exploration Of Enterprise Level Partnership And The Influences Informing Private Sector Organisations' Choice Of This Model In The Republic Of Ireland, Kevin O'Leary

Masters

The research follows the strategic choice of Partnership and seeks to gain an understanding of the processes and practices which define this concept and the political, economic and historical influences which have shaped it's evolution. The primary focus of this study is to explore the factors which have shaped the decision of private sector einployers to engage with or to reject Partnership as an appropriate model. The literature and the surveys consulted suggest that Partnership has not become an established or mainstream activity and reflects singularly low levels of uptake despite being actively promoted by Government and it's social partners. …

Business Strategy Types And Innovative Practices, Tim Blumentritt, Wade M. Danis Jul 2006

Business Strategy Types And Innovative Practices, Tim Blumentritt, Wade M. Danis

Faculty Articles

This study empirically examines how a firm's strategic orientation imparts its management of innovative activities. Drawing on the strategic management and innovation literatures, we develop and empirically test hypotheses arguing that a firm's strategic orientation will impact its perception of barriers to innovation, its sources of ideas for innovation, and its targets for innovation. The data, from over 244 firms, generally support the hypotheses. The study's findings suggest that a firm's strategic management and its management of innovation are highly integrated.

An Uncertain Future: Economic And Behavioral Influences That Motivate Small Business Owners In The Decision To Adopt An Employee Retirement Plan, Jill B. Mccullough

Student Scholarship

While much recent national public attention has focused on the widespread replacement of large corporations' defined-benefit pension plans with defined-contribution plans, far less attention has been given to the deficiencies concerning retirement plans for employees of small businesses. As almost 50% of United States workers are employed in these small businesses, the future ramifications of an aging workforce with no retirement savings could have serious economic consequences. The objective of this study is to advance the understanding of the factors influencing small business owners in their decision to offer or not offer a retirement plan for the benefit of themselves …

A preliminary survey among the Kenyan youth shows that a small but growing number of college graduates are choosing to venture into small-scale businesses on graduation. The researchers interviewed some youth entrepreneurs and found that their experiences in college may have positively influenced their attitudes towards entrepreneurship. This research aims at exploring the link between the experience in colleges and the intentions towards entrepreneurship among college graduates. Institutions that operate in competitive environments are more likely to be innovative and to be more risk-oriented than institutions that do not face competition. In Kenya, privately owned institutions of higher learning do …

Managing Perplexing Congregations: The Case Of Chinese Protestant Church In North America, Siu-Hang P. Chan Jun 2006

Managing Perplexing Congregations: The Case Of Chinese Protestant Church In North America, Siu-Hang P. Chan

Student Scholarship

How religious congregations adapt to change determines whether they will continue to thrive (Ammerman, 1997). Chinese immigrant religious organizations in America face a built-in clash between the generations of Overseas-Born Chinese (OBC) and American-Born Chinese (ABC) that is most visible in their religious congregations (Ling & Cheuk, 1999). This study identifies how Chinese congregations develop interpretive schemes (Bartunek, 1984) that help bridge the generational transition and lead to successful adaptation or its hindrance.

Social Network Destruction And Effective Practices For The Recovery Of Social Capital Assets, R. Drew Sellers Jun 2006

Social Network Destruction And Effective Practices For The Recovery Of Social Capital Assets, R. Drew Sellers

Student Scholarship

The workplace is ripe for establishing and growing professionally useful social networks. Social networks evolve as organizations change and individuals come and go. But, what happens when an organization destructs? Does the collapse of the organization which gave rise to the formation of these relationships claim the social networks as collateral damage? Or, do portions of social networks persist, expand to incorporate new members, and influence post collapse outcomes? This paper provides a set of concepts for understanding the recoverability of an individual’s social capital and social network assets when an organization destructs. It seeks to determine effective practices individuals …

The Private Provision Of Public Goods: Terrorism Protection In The Critical Infrastructure Industries, James K. Hayes Jun 2006

The Private Provision Of Public Goods: Terrorism Protection In The Critical Infrastructure Industries, James K. Hayes

Student Scholarship

My research interest is to understand the business plan for industries to invest in security against terrorism, if and why this investment is likely to be less than socially optimal and what government's role is in promoting the appropriate level of investment in security in a free market economy. I believe that an industry's ability to pay for such protection is an important factor but have also relied heavily on the economic literature regarding the theoretical circumstances in which a private actor will willingly contribute to the provision of a public good. Unfortunately, the literature is ambiguous in its prediction …

The Role Of Cognitive Biases And Framing In Strategic Decision-Making Processes Regarding Socially Responsible Actions, Jonathan Coleman Jun 2006

The Role Of Cognitive Biases And Framing In Strategic Decision-Making Processes Regarding Socially Responsible Actions, Jonathan Coleman

Student Scholarship

This paper is intended to provide a conceptual framework about the importance of cognitive biases and framing in the strategic decisionmaking (SDM) processes used by corporations when addressing socially responsible actions. Through crises, regulation, activism and attempts to gain competitive advantage, companies are facing a dynamic environment requiring increased incorporation of social actions into corporate strategy. However, the nebulous nature of social actions and the inertia of bureaucracies have led to inefficient implementation of those actions. The conceptual framework developed in this paper sheds light on SDM processes involving corporate social responsibility (CSR), and lays a foundation for research in …

Risk Transference And Risk Perception Analysis Of Serial Entrepreneurs And Venture Capitalists, Francis A. Papay Jun 2006

Risk Transference And Risk Perception Analysis Of Serial Entrepreneurs And Venture Capitalists, Francis A. Papay

Student Scholarship

Risk is inherent in decisionmaking when uncertain parameters and outcomes are involved. In the creation of a new venture, both entrepreneurs and their subsequent investors assume and share a variety of risks emanating from a multitude of such uncertain parameters of the early developing venture. One such midstage investor, the venture capitalist, attempts to mitigate the risks of investing in a new venture by incorporating detailed market, intellectual property strategy, financial and managerial elements into his or her investment decisionmaking analysis. Since venture capitalists are historically successful less than 20 percent of their investments in nascent companies, it appears that …

A changing business environment with urgency in delivering more products faster and cheaper is imposing new demands on teams where old ways of doing business are becoming obsolete. Much of the resulting interdependence of business activity in the global environment is a key driver in trying to establish effective distributed collaborative teams, also known as virtual teams. As such they are unable to always operate optimally or produce optimal solutions--forcing organizations to reexamine their project team strategies both at the individual and group level. Organizations have applied electronic mediating solutions of various types to support such virtual teams but this …

In this paper, we describe a decision support system developed for automatically scheduling and optimising broadcasts of advertisements to mobile phones via SMS (Short Message Service) text messaging. The system, MABS or “Mobile Advertising Broadcast Scheduler”, is developed in Microsoft Excel with a link to Lingo, a modelling language and IP solver. It was developed for a London-based company specialized in location-sensitive precision marketing via mobile phones. The system significantly reduced the time required to schedule the broadcasts, and resulted both in increased customer response and revenues.

Desulfovibrio Desulfuricans G20 Tetraheme Cytochrome Structure At 1.5 A˚ And Cytochrome Interaction With Metal Complexes, Mrunalini Pattarkine, J J. Tanner, C A. Bottoms, Y H. Lee, Judy D. Wall

Faculty Works

The structure of the type I tetraheme cytochrome c3 from Desulfovibrio desulfuricans G20 was determined to 1.5 A˚ by X-ray crystallography. In addition to the oxidized form, the structure of the molybdate-bound form of the protein was determined from oxidized crystals soaked in sodium molybdate. Only small structural shifts were obtained with metal binding, consistent with the remarkable structural stability of this protein. In vitro experiments with pure cytochrome showed that molybdate could oxidize the reduced cytochrome, although not as rapidly as U(VI) present as uranyl acetate. Alterations in the overall conformation and thermostability of the metal-oxidized protein were investigated …
