Social Change - Making The Improbable Possible Through Collaboration: A Framework For Examining The Influence Of Funders On Collaboration Performance, Jane Cooke-Lauder
Social Change - Making The Improbable Possible Through Collaboration: A Framework For Examining The Influence Of Funders On Collaboration Performance, Jane Cooke-Lauder
Student Scholarship
What are the critical elements contributing to successful collaboration among non- government organizations working together to tackle wicked social problems in super stressed environments? What role does the funder play in aiding the success of such collaborative endeavours? We used a combination of collaborative theory gathered primarily from research conducted in the developed world among both for profit and not for profit entities, together with practitioner observations to examine two different possible sets of influencers on the performance of collaborative projects: the dynamic among the collaborating partners expressed in terms of role clarity, conflict management and interorganizational trust – as …
The Duplicity Effect: Professional Investment Decisions For Others Versus Self, Timothy Joseph Timura
The Duplicity Effect: Professional Investment Decisions For Others Versus Self, Timothy Joseph Timura
Student Scholarship
A global retirement crisis looms--particularly here in the States. Americans are increasingly finding themselves responsible for securing their own financial futures. Many, however, do not feel comfortable with the myriad challenges it entails. Seeking help, they are turning to professionals. But are professionals up to this task? If professionals exhibit sub-optimal investment decision making behavior for themselves, can they be expected to exhibit better behavior when working on behalf of others? Exploring strategic asset allocation decisions for clients, this study discovered an analytical foundation similar to that used for the self as well as the existence of the Duplicity Effect--defined …

Board/Ceo Engagement: Bridging The Governance Gap, Brian L. Newton
Student Scholarship
The role that leaders perform in governing nonprofit organizations has confounded practitioners and scholars since the time of the early settlers, when the functions of governance were first separated. Is governance the role of the board, management, or both? Today, little has changed. Public and private nonprofit organizations, almost all of which are governed by boards of lay citizens and by professional executives, continue to define the gap between what the board's role is and what the chief executive officer's (CEO) role is. Organizations such as BoardSource (formerly the National Center for Nonprofit Boards), The Aspen Institute, the Independent Sector, …

"I Think We Never Looked At A Financial Analysis" : Making Sense Of Resource Allocation Decisions In Technical Innovation In The Durable Consumer Goods Industry, Martin Zummersch
"I Think We Never Looked At A Financial Analysis" : Making Sense Of Resource Allocation Decisions In Technical Innovation In The Durable Consumer Goods Industry, Martin Zummersch
Student Scholarship
The purpose of this research study was to investigate how practitioners' of the durable consumer goods industry make resource allocation decisions in technical innovation, in an industry shaped by high uncertainty and low barriers to entry. Few studies have been conducted that generated qualitative data that allowed for comparisons between prescriptive models and the actual lived-world experiences of practitioners. During the investigation we conducted interviews with executives of the industry that allowed us to better understand how practitioners derived at decisions and why certain organizations were able to innovate more successfully than others. This analysis leveraged the theories of the …
Investment Consumer Satisfaction: Identifying Factors Of Influence In Financial Advisory Relationships, Betty Moon
Investment Consumer Satisfaction: Identifying Factors Of Influence In Financial Advisory Relationships, Betty Moon
Student Scholarship
The search for key factors that influence consumer satisfaction and loyalty in financial advisory relationships, originating in consumer behavior theory, suggests that consumer/financial advisor similarity and superior investment portfolio performance may be key drivers of client satisfaction. Conversely 70% of respondents in this study indicated that similarity played no role at all in their satisfaction with advisors, and 20% of respondents asserted that they specifically selected advisors for their dissimilarity. Our results suggest three discrete, potentially important, drivers of consumer satisfaction- client self-efficacy, client financial self-worth and financial advisor interpersonal performance. In conclusion, we discuss how these findings may enhance …
The Impact Of Organization Destruction On Social Capital Value, R. Drew Sellers
The Impact Of Organization Destruction On Social Capital Value, R. Drew Sellers
Student Scholarship
This paper links social capital dynamics and value with organization destruction. It produces the finding that organizational destruction may in some cases increase the value of social capital. A key theoretical contribution of this study is extending the metaphor of social capital to encompass asset recoverability. Based upon cases studies of 15 individuals who lived through the destruction of Arthur Andersen, this paper examines the persistence and value of an individual's social capital when an organization destructs. It explores the question, "Is the value of an individual's investment in organization-specific social capital a recoverable asset post-destruction?" Interviews with Andersen alumni …
Enabling Trust And Performance In Distributed Collaborative Teams, Eugene A. Pierce
Enabling Trust And Performance In Distributed Collaborative Teams, Eugene A. Pierce
Student Scholarship
Virtual teams allow organizations to bring together critical contributors who might not otherwise be able to work together due to time, travel and cost restrictions. In addition, virtual teams can enhance the available pool of resources by including people from outside the sponsoring organization, such as consultants, or members of partner organizations. Virtual teams also allow organizations to hire and retain the best people, who may be either unable or unwilling to relocate, and to facilitate dynamic membership changes as a result of changes in project requirements or the unexpected loss of team members. As such they are sometimes unable …

Pay Satisfaction, Job Satisfaction, Organizational Commitment And Turnover Intention In Taiwan Banking: Structural Equation Modeling, Chin-Chih Wang
Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios
Various investigators have researched voluntary employee turnover intention within both the private and public sectors. However, little is known about employee turnover intention within the domestic private banking industry in Taiwan. This study examined the fundamental theoretical literature and empirical studies related to employee turnover intention among Taiwanese domestic private banking employees.
The relationship among pay satisfaction, job satisfaction, organizational commitment and voluntary employee turnover is an important issue for any organization. Employee turnover as the result of practices within the fields of economics, human resource management, organizational behavior, psychology, and ethics have been examined in this study. This research …

Sponsorship By Executive Leaders: Perceptions And Influences On Engagement Among U.S. Air Force General Officers, Kevin Roots
Sponsorship By Executive Leaders: Perceptions And Influences On Engagement Among U.S. Air Force General Officers, Kevin Roots
Student Scholarship
Sponsorship is one of several factors that may influence career advancement into the executive level of an organization; but the concept of sponsorship is not well understood. This proposal presents an overview of the literature about sponsorship. The proposal makes distinctions between mentorship and sponsorship. It describes a qualitative research study that asks how U.S. Air Force general officers perceive and engage in sponsorship. The aim of this study is to understand how Air Force generals understand sponsorship, and whether (and how) they engage in it. A conceptual model is proposed that considers sponsors’ perceptions based on their own experiences, …
Building And Sustaining Success: Emotional, Social And Cognitive Competencies That Predict Management Performance In A Financial Sales Setting. A Qualitative Study, Raymond Massa
Student Scholarship
This paper examines the emotional, social and cognitive competencies that predict performance of a financial sales branch and its Financial Advisors. The focus--the unit of analysis--of this study is the Branch Manager. It is hypothesized that the Branch Manager, through a set of emotional, social and cognitive competencies, can, as a leader, influence better overall results. The research presented in this paper is a qualitative study that compares and contrasts both Outstanding Branch managers and Typical Branch Managers. It does this in two ways: by identifying those competencies that differentiate Outstanding from Typical Branch Managers; and by identifying the effects …

Number Of Independent Board Directors And Training Hours And Financial Performance Of Tsec [Taiwan Securities Exchange Corporation] Electronic Companies, Fu-Huei Yang
Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios
In February 2002, the regulation of appointing independent directors in the boardroom was set forth in "Corporate Governance Best-Practice Principles for TSEC/GTSM Listed Companies" (CGBPP). Since the enactment of the amended "Security and Exchange Act" in 2006, all listed companies are required to appoint independent directors, not less than two in number and not less than one-fifth of the total number of directors.
In addition to implementing the independent directors system, in order to enhance director competencies and director behavior, the TSEC announced the "Guideline for Promotion of Advanced Study by Directors and Supervisors of TSEC/GTSM Listed Companies." In this …

Reflections From A Former Executive Director, Jill Dolan
Reflections From A Former Executive Director, Jill Dolan
Center for LGBTQ Studies (CLAGS)
I joined CLAGS as a board member in 1994, at a transitional moment in its history. The grassroots activist project that Marty Duberman had started in his living room had been recognized as one of CUNY's Research Centers for only a short time at that point, and many people on the board struggled with what it meant to be institutionally affiliated. The board had grown from people Marty knew personally to a broader group of gay and lesbian scholars (or simply scholars working on gay and lesbian issues) recommended by others. For example, I was brought to the board by …

Measures Of Perceived Credibility Of Blogs: Construct Validation By Lisrel, Uday S. Tate, Elizabeth Alexander, Suneel K. Maheshwari
Management Faculty Research
Predictions are that blogs will be the promotional tool of the future, if not now. The question remains: how credible are blogs as a source of consumer information? How do consumers perceive the credibility of blogs from different sources when making purchase decisions and product evaluations? The primary objective of the present study is to assess validity and reliability of a set of Semantic Differential scales purported to measure perceived credibility of different types of blogs. Confirmatory factor analysis via LISREL8.5 package was used to obtain appropriate statistics for convergent validity, discriminant validity, and composite reliability. In general, the scales …
Information Technology, Production Process Outsourcing, And Manufacturing Plant Performance, Indranil Bardhan, Jonathan W. Whitaker, Sunil Mithas
Information Technology, Production Process Outsourcing, And Manufacturing Plant Performance, Indranil Bardhan, Jonathan W. Whitaker, Sunil Mithas
Management Faculty Publications
What is the role of information technology (IT) in enabling the outsourcing of manufacturing plant production processes? Do plant strategies influence production outsourcing? Does production process outsourcing influence plant performance? This research addresses these questions by investigating the role of IT and plant strategies as antecedents of production outsourcing, and evaluating the impact of production outsourcing and IT investments on plant cost and quality. We develop a theoretical framework for the antecedents and performance outcomes of production outsourcing at the plant level. We validate this theoretical framework using cross-sectional survey data from U.S. manufacturing plants. Our analysis suggests that plants …
Presumptive Adaptation And The Effectiveness Of Knowledge Transfer, Robert J. Jensen, Gabriel Szulanski
Presumptive Adaptation And The Effectiveness Of Knowledge Transfer, Robert J. Jensen, Gabriel Szulanski
Faculty Publications
Adaptation is almost invariably accompanies the cross-border transfer of firm specific practices. The existing literature contains two conflicting approaches to adaptation. The first, more traditional approach, following institutional, motivation, and pragmatic efficiency considerations, presumes that a modified practice can be fine-tuned, stabilized, and institutionalized without consulting a working example and that practices should thus be adapted as quickly as possible to create fit with the local environment. The second approach argues, instead for the need to maintain the diagnostic value of the original practice by adapting cautiously and gradually. In this paper, we report an in-depth field investigation of the …

Modeling The Academic Publication Pipeline, Steven E. Moss, Xiaolong Zhang, Michael M. Barth
Logistics & Supply Chain Management: Faculty Presentations (1998-2020)
In recent years, many academic institutions have implemented more stringent academic qualification standards by increasing research requirements for faculty. This paper analyzes the impact of changing research requirements in terms of faculty research output. We model the academic research pipeline including review and revision processes as a queue network and study the stationary behavior of the research pipeline. Both a theoretical model of the publication process and a simulation showing numerous combinations of submission strategies and publication requirements are presented. Within this framework, research requirements can be analyzed via probability constraints on the output process, and the research effort that …
