Review Of Inge Nielsen, Cultic Theatres And Ritual Drama In American Journal Of Archaeology, On-Line Reviews, Vol. 111.1:, Kenneth S. Rothwell Jr.

Nielsen has done us a great service by collecting the considerable evidence for cultic performance spaces in Egypt, Mesopotamia, Syria, Phoenicia, Asia Minor, Crete, Greece, Sicily, and Italy. A table (340–41) gives an index of the 58 bestpreserved theaters, but dozens of others are discussed as well. Although some of the theaters could also have been used for “secular” literary drama, this volume focuses on cultic use. Nielsen’s observations should be of great interest to students of theater, religion, and ancient architecture.

Originally titled Threes, its plot revolves around Bobby (a single man unable to commit fully to a steady relationship, let alone marriage), the five married couples who are his best friends, and his three girlfriends. Unlike most book musicals, which follow a clearly delineated plot, Company is a concept musical composed of short vignettes, presented in no particular chronological order, linked by a celebration for Bobby's 35th birthday.

The Sacred Performative: Holy Wednesday And Colonial Ritual/Theatre, Christopher B. Swift

"Holy Wednesday" is a late sixteenth century adaptation of a Spanish auto sacramental (sacred play) written in alphabetized Nahuatl, the predominant pre-Columbian language spoken on the High Central Plateau of Mexico. The author remains unknown, however he was likely a Nahua amanuensis educated by Franciscans at Colegio de Santa Cruz in Tlatelolco. Religious drama was one of the important evangelizing tools of the Catholic brotherhoods in colonial Mexico and although a record of performance of Holy Wednesday does not exist, this dramatic depiction of the final meeting of Christ and Mary prior to the crucifixion was almost certainly performed as …

The 'place' scholars have assigned to the stage in early modern London is as much a reflection of the procedures of contemporary literary criticism as a reflection of the cultural function of popular drama in the early modern period. For my honors thesis, I am directing the play Rhinoceros by Eugene Ionesco. Ionesco wrote this play after World War II to artistically explore how something as terrible as the Holocaust, Fascism, and the Nazi party could be allowed control and power in society. How could people allow themselves and others to turn into wild beasts? Rhinoceros is an absurdist play, with characters literally turning into violent rhinos, symbolically allowing violence to overtake them.

The play explores the behavior of people facing and exploring groupthink, apathy, and standing up for one’s own beliefs in the face of opposition. I think …
