In the spring of 1626 John Milton was temporarily expelled from Cambridge University, perhaps over a quarrel with his tutor William Chappell, and sent home to London, where he remained for at least several weeks. There, the seventeen-year-old poet composed his first elegy, a Latin verse-letter to his closest friend, Charles Diodati. In it, Milton claims to be enjoying his unexpected holiday by reading, girl watching, and attending the theater. Milton scholars have never reached consensus about his alleged playgoing, for while the young man speaks as a spectator, the plots and characters he mentions-these include comic types such as …

Publications and Research

Though scholarship of the early modern era focuses on the character of Moll Frith when considering the gender ideology contained in Thomas Middleton and Thomas Dekker's "The Roaring Girl," the play's other female characters are also of interest. The "citizen wives" of the play are women who, though married, work outside the home. Their special status in the emerging capitalist marketplace of the early modern era gave rise to unique anxieties about their economic power and sexual availability. These anxieties in turn made these women especially susceptible to slander against their sexual reputation and thus respectability in the community. An …

This collection consists of one scrapbook of clippings and photos and one folder of ephemera. The scrapbook includes extensive clippings and a limited number of photos of the 1937 flood in Huntington, West Virginia. Ephemera includes a copy of “The Belle of Barcelona: A Musical Comedy in Three Acts”, a 1929 program for said comedy at Huntington High School, and a ticket, pamphlet, clipping, and envelope about the 1976 American Freedom Train in Huntington.

Agustín Gómez-Arcos, a bilingual dramatist and novelist, was born in 1933 in the village of Enix (Almeria). The origins of his theater can be traced to his childhood experiences, in which he witnessed firsthand the horrors of the Spanish Civil War and the dark clouds of oppression of the Francoist regime, images that left indelible imprints on his literature and his life. Although in the future he would leave behind both native country and language, his memories of the Civil War and postwar period would continue to surface in his plays.

This edition presents twenty-one short plays by Ring W. Lardner (1885-1933), most of which have previously been accessible only on microfilm and in special collections. No edition exclusively dedicated to Lardner’s plays has ever been published. Though Lardner is known primarily for his short stories and sports writing, he considered himself to be a playwright and lyricist. Throughout his career he wrote several full-length plays (collaborating with George Cohan and George Kaufman, among others) and hundreds of short plays and sketches from which my collection is derived. Our culture today faces a crisis with our young women. Between the ages of ten and fifteen, young women attempt to define their identities under societal pressure, and in the midst of sometimes overwhelmingly dysfunctional families. F̲r̲o̲n̲t̲i̲e̲r̲s̲ is a play that deals with these issues.

As Eve struggles to define herself as a free human being, separate from June, her emotionally needy mother, she also feels the inevitable entanglement of her identity with that of her family. For my senior honors thesis, I wanted to do a creative project. I chose to write an original play, hoping to draw upon my experiences over the last four years, including having already written a one act play my sophomore year. I spent a year working with ideas, reading other plays to examine different forms, and experimenting with the characters. The bulk of the dialogue was written this spring, and I worked with my faculty readers to trim down the excesses and sharpen the focus of the plot. My original intentions when I began this project were to write and present a full-length play of my own design, examining the farm crisis through the medium of theater. The reason I chose not to use the title of my play for the title of my project is because the vast majority of my time was spent discovering the world outside of my script. The purpose of this project was to write a play that could be used as a teaching tool for addressing multicultural issues in educational curricula. The literature review suggests that dramatic activities can be effective teaching strategies to address multicultural and diversity issues. The one-act play, Irene, is set in a middle-class American neighborhood and focuses on the conflict within a broken home.
