It also describes students who have taken the class: native Spanish speakers, heritage speakers, returned missionaries, students from lower-levels, students with a background in another Romance language, and presents information as to how well the class has met the needs of each group of students, as well as suggestions to better meet student needs. Results indicate that there is a general satisfaction with the first …

Understanding Mood Selection For Nominal Clauses Headed By El Hecho De Que In Spanish, George P. Myers, Dr. Jeffrey S. Turley Sep 2013

Understanding Mood Selection For Nominal Clauses Headed By El Hecho De Que In Spanish, George P. Myers, Dr. Jeffrey S. Turley

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In A Dictionary of Linguistics and Phonetics, David Crystal semantically defines the mood of a verb as the “attitudes on the part of a speaker towards the factual content of the utterance, e.g. uncertainty, definiteness, vagueness, possibility.”1 While Crystal’s definition may give the mood of a verb an orderly appearance, more than one grammarian has appropriately compared understanding the factors leading up to mood selection to untangling a large ball of knotted string. With considerable credibility, most grammarians claim to have organized much of the tangle; however, few can explain how to separate the subjunctive mood from the indicative …

In my project, I visited Salamanca, Spain, and shared with the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese …

Buscando La Identidad Nacional Española En La Novela Castilla, Amy Brownstein

Pitzer Senior Theses

Bybee, Perkins, & Pagliuca, 1994, Comrie 1976 Harris, 1982, Squartini & Bertinetto 2000, inter alia), attests to the complexity of accurately describing the uses, meanings and functions of the PP. Among the studies of the PP in Spanish, two main approaches are employed. In one approach, the grammaticalization, analysis of temporal and aspectual uses of the …

However, more and more programs have been implementing civic engagement in the Hispanic community into the curriculum to create a service-learning experience. This study sought to determine the effectiveness of service-learning in enhancing communication techniques. Twenty undergraduate students at the University of Kentucky were surveyed at the onset and the conclusion of one semester while simultaneously serving the Hispanic community. The students, on average, increased the frequency of communication techniques after a semester of service-learning. Students who participate in a service-learning program often times see a result …

The present investigation brings to light some of the changes associated with the use of English and Spanish in the US Catholic Church. The second part examines the role of acculturation during this process of officialization; and the final section analyzes the use of inclusive language in the Church, as an attempt to have a more gender-balanced institution. Enhancing Listening And Spoken Skills In Spanish Connected Speech For Anglophones, Elena Paz Vizcaya Jun 2012

Enhancing Listening And Spoken Skills In Spanish Connected Speech For Anglophones, Elena Paz Vizcaya

Doctoral

Native speech is directed towards native listeners, not designed for comprehension and analysis by language learners. Speed of delivery, or economy of effort, produces a speech signal to which the native listener can assign the correct words. There are no discrete words in the speech signal itself therefore there is often a linguistic barrier in dealing with the local spoken language.
The creation, development and application of the Dynamic Spanish Speech Corpus (DSSC) facilitated an empirically-based appreciation of speaking speed and prosody as obstacles to intelligibility for learners of Spanish. “Duologues”, natural, relaxed dialogues recorded in such a manner that …

The Making And Breaking Of A Language: The French And Spanish Effect Upon The Catalan Regional Language, Margaret Emilyn Cychosz

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

Almost four hundred years ago, the French and Spanish governments divided the Catalan border regions located between their respective countries. The subsequent centuries have seen the expansion and development of the Catalan language in Spain and the demise of the Catalan language in France, where it has nearly deteriorated to disuse. Is this a reflection upon the French and Spanish culture or was it simply governmental policy? If so, what did the central governments of Madrid and Paris do in the centuries following the division that resulted in this contrasting development of Catalan? What effect did the usage of Catalan …

Chilean Cultural Identity: A Case Study Of Contemporary Mapuche Poetry, La Identidad Cultural Chilena: Un Caso De Estudio De La Poesía Mapuche Contemporánea, Christopher Culbertson

Senior Independent Study Theses

The topic is approached in three different manners: hybrid theory, academic perspectives, and poetry analysis. An application of hybrid theory facilitates the understanding of cultural identity within Chile. A discussion by three Chilean professors reveals the important themes of geographic location, generation, and language in both the production and reception of written contemporary Mapuche poetry. An analysis of selected of written Mapuche poetry depicts the unique conceptualizations of identity by contemporary Mapuche poets. As a result, this independent study shows how written contemporary Mapuche poetry is an appropriate indicator of the evolution of Mapuche hybrid identity.

Better Speakers Make More Friends: Predictors Of Social Network Development Among Study-Abroad Students, J Wyatt Brockbank

Theses and Dissertations

Social network development has been studied in the social sciences for the last several decades, but little work has applied social network theory to study-abroad research. This study seeks to quantitatively describe factors that predict social network formation among study-abroad students while in the host countries. Social networks were measured in terms of the number of friends the students made, the number of distinct social groups reported, and the number of friends within those groups. The Study Abroad Social Interaction Questionnaire was compared against these pre-trip factors: intercultural competence, target-language proficiency, prior missionary experience, gender, study-abroad program, neuroticism, extroversion, agreeableness, …

Spanish Translation Of Sze-Man Lam's “All About Sexuality: Gender Studies In Pedro Almodovar's Films”, Kurt Ryan Schultheis

World Languages and Cultures

I started researching possible senior project options with the idea in mind of writing a scholarly paper about the films of Pedro Almodóvar. When I looked at all that had been written about him already, I suddenly felt overwhelmed. It seemed that everything that could possibly be said about Almodóvar had already been said, and what could I possibly have to add? Then I found Sze-man Lam's Master of Arts thesis that she wrote in 2004 at the University of Hong Kong. As I read it, I thought, “This is the paper that I wanted to write!” I had all …
