Humor, Discurso Y Argumentación: Cuando El Comediante Es El Filósofo, Yanira B. Paz Jan 2016

Humor, Discurso Y Argumentación: Cuando El Comediante Es El Filósofo, Yanira B. Paz

Hispanic Studies Faculty Publications

Hispanic Studies Faculty Publications

Languages, Literatures and Cultures Faculty Scholarship

The aim of this paper is to present the principal areas of sociolinguistic research concerning Spanish spoken in the United States. In doing so, we focus on a variety of topics ranging from macro-sociolinguistic issues, such as the sociology of language, to micro-sociolinguistic features having more to do with language variation and change. In our discussion of bilingualism and sociology of language, we explore the situation faced by Spanish speakers in the United States, including discussions of language policies and bilingual education. We also examine cases of contact between various dialects of Spanish in the United States, and some variable …

Dorotea, Ruy Pérez, And Zoraida: Modeling The Art Of Paradoxy In A Binary World, Christi Garst-Santos Jan 2016

Dorotea, Ruy Pérez, And Zoraida: Modeling The Art Of Paradoxy In A Binary World, Christi Garst-Santos

School of American and Global Studies Faculty Publications with a Focus on Modern Languages and Global Studies

Throughout Cervantes’s Don Quijote, dress and language play an important role in establishing a character’s identity for both other characters and the reader. Beginning with the very first page of the novel, the narrator’s description of Alonso Quijano’s wardrobe, along with other amusing quotidian behaviors, establishes the protagonist’s status as an impoverished, Old Christian, rural hidalgo. Furthermore, Quijano’s performance as Don Quijote hinges on his sartorial trappings, and his first transformative act is to clean up the ancestral armor and, quite literally, “suit up” for his new role. Once astride Rocinante, the reader is treated to Quijote’s fanciful musings in …

Third Person References: Forms And Functions In Two Spoken Genres Of Spanish, Jenny Dumont Jan 2016

Third Person References: Forms And Functions In Two Spoken Genres Of Spanish, Jenny Dumont

Gettysburg College Faculty Books

This volume, a case study on the grammar of third person references in two genres of spoken Ecuadorian Spanish, examines from a discourse-analytic perspective how genre affects linguistic patterns and how researchers can look for and interpret genre effects. This marks a timely contribution to corpus linguistics, as many linguists are choosing to work with empirical data. Corpus based approaches have many advantages and are useful in the comparison of different languages as well as varieties of the same language, but what is often overlooked in such comparisons is the genre of language under examination. As this case study shows, …

La Influencia De La Medicina: Relación Entre Literatura Y Cultura En La Temprana Edad Moderna Española, Nicole Cruz Jan 2016

La Influencia De La Medicina: Relación Entre Literatura Y Cultura En La Temprana Edad Moderna Española, Nicole Cruz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The sciences, in particular the field of medicine, have had an important role in society since its significance has been recorded in historical texts. Due to this fact, the future of medicine depends on, to a certain extent, the knowledge that has been collected in the past from the previously catalogued records. In addition to these records, literature from a specific time period could be useful to study and analyze how opinions have been formulated throughout history, how scientific accomplishments were shared, and what influences impacted society. This study will first explore panoramically the historical context of medicine in Spain …

El Rol De La Inmersión En La Producción Del Futuro Del Subjuntivo En Portugués, Evelin Pegoraro Jan 2016

El Rol De La Inmersión En La Producción Del Futuro Del Subjuntivo En Portugués, Evelin Pegoraro

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Portuguese Future Subjunctive (FS) is frequently studied since out of all modern romance languages, this verbal tense and mood is regularly maintained only in Portuguese. Moreover, variation and alternation occur in the use of the FS by the speakers of the language through a substitution of the irregular inflections of the FS by the regular inflections of the Personal Infinitive (IP). The only difference between the FS and the IP is found in the irregular verbs of the FS, and these are usually "regularized" by Portuguese speakers. Since the regular verbs of the FS are identical to the IP, …

De Neruda A Parra: Un Análisis De Los Aspectos Estéticos Y Socio-Políticos Que Construyen La Chilenidad En La Época Contemporánea, Julia M. Lindberg

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Two Terms Of The Cuban Counterpoint: Transculturation In The Poetry Of Nicolás Guillén, Alanna L. Fulk Jan 2016

Two Terms Of The Cuban Counterpoint: Transculturation In The Poetry Of Nicolás Guillén, Alanna L. Fulk

Honors Undergraduate Theses

The history of Latin America and the Caribbean was irreversibly altered by the arrival of the conquistadors, destruction of native civilizations and implementation of colonialism for hundreds of years. However, Spain also introduced the high culture of the baroque to Latin America and the Caribbean, which mixed with the cultures of native and African peoples, creating new, distinct forms of literary expression. Subsequent post-colonial cultural movements attempted to explore and reaffirm the variety of cultures that shaped both regions, including the movement of Afrocubanismo in Cuba, which occurred from 1910-1940. Afrocubanismo was a movement intended to incorporate African folklore and …

Left Brain Vs. Right Brain: An Analysis Of Cervantes' Don Quixote, Michael D. Scimeca Jan 2016

Left Brain Vs. Right Brain: An Analysis Of Cervantes' Don Quixote, Michael D. Scimeca

Honors Undergraduate Theses

El ingenioso hidalgo Don Quixote de la Mancha sits at the crossroads of two defined Spanish early modern contexts, combining Renaissance ideals with Baroque elements into one Golden Age masterpiece. The theme of duality present throughout the work finds true expression in Cervantes’ well-educated protagonist, Alonso Quijano. In him, the reader glimpses the struggle between antiquity versus early modernity, ideality versus reality, instability versus sanity, and unhealthiness versus healthiness. These medical themes and the underlying sociocultural facets will be investigated by thoroughly evaluating Cervantes’ treatment of human consciousness. In doing so, this study aims to explore the following questions: to …

Facilitating Lexical Acquisition In Beginner Learners Of Italian Through Task-Induced Involvement Load, Vanessa J. Natale Rukholm Jan 2016

Facilitating Lexical Acquisition In Beginner Learners Of Italian Through Task-Induced Involvement Load, Vanessa J. Natale Rukholm

The Coastal Review

This empirical study explores the facilitation of lexical acquisition and retention through an incidental experiment examining the effect of Involvement Load on Italian vocabulary growth among beginner learners. The experiment, with a pre-test/post-test design investigates the facilitative effects of elaborate processing on L2 lexical acquisition and retention. Participants in sections of the same first-year Italian course were divided into one of five groups consisting of a Control Group and four Treatment groups. Treatment groups were divided based on level of Involvement (Laufer & Hulstijn, 2001) such that some groups processed target words elaborately (Craik, 2002; Lockhart, 2002) through vocabulary exercises …

La Reconstrucción De La Identidad Dañada: Formación Y El Sujeto Femenino Como Agente Moral En "Habíamos Ganado La Guerra" (2008) De Esther Tusquets, Agustin Martinez-Samos Jan 2016

La Reconstrucción De La Identidad Dañada: Formación Y El Sujeto Femenino Como Agente Moral En "Habíamos Ganado La Guerra" (2008) De Esther Tusquets, Agustin Martinez-Samos

The Coastal Review

I analyze female coming-of-age's subjectivity foundations in Habíamos ganado la guerra (2008) by Esther Tusquets. She discusses socializing during girlhood looking into adulthood under the civil uneasiness of post-Civil War Spain. Her voice remodels her conflicting identity and her cultural imbalance through a “female counter-narrative.”

Her memories becomes a problem solving mechanism for her anxiety and self-doubts derivative from conflicts between her maturity process and the established manual for female behavior of General Franco’s Spain. She reclaims her true subjectivity and moral agency with the written word. Therefore, fictional memoir equates to a valuable remodeling of the female subject.

Writings by Spanish contemporary authors María Reimóndez, Rosa Montero, and Julia Otxoa display, not only a deep awareness of local and national matters, but also a noteworthy engagement with broader issues of a global nature. Their works highlight, furthermore, the diversity of female voices in Spanish literature as well as the pluralism of languages, cultures, and geographies that make up the Iberian Peninsula today. This article provides a brief description of this research project as a whole, a concise critical introduction to each of the author’s works, and interviews with the three writers. Afroreggae And Grupo Cultural Afro Reggae: A Study Of The Early Years, Sarah S. Ohmer

Publications and Research

The following study of AfroReggae and Grupo Cultural Afro Reggae (GCAR) calls attention to Brazilian presence and community organizing in the field of Hip Hop studies with a long memory framework: placing AfroReggae and GCAR in a long history of Africana resistance through music in Latin America. !990s GCAR group arises when reggae and Hip Hop music had become new global forms of solidarity among urban marginalized youths worldwide, making use of old and new strategies of social healing (Fernandes 2011). A close look at lyrics from the Hip Hop fusion band and the associated nonprofit organization shape the concepts …

Tango: A Spanish-Based Programming Language, Ashley Zegiestowsky

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

The purpose of this thesis is a two-part project. The first part of the project deals with the creation of my own Spanish-based programming language, Tango, using Spanish key words (instead of English key words). The second part of the project relates to the design and implementation of a compiler that follows the grammar rules outlined in the Tango language in order to successfully lexically analyze, parse, semantically analyze, and generate code for Tango. The structure of this thesis begins with a description of the specific goals achieved in the Tango language, an explanation and brief examples of the Tango …

The Cartography Of The New World: Hernán Cortés’S Literary Mapping Of America, Sarah Tietz Jan 2016

The Cartography Of The New World: Hernán Cortés’S Literary Mapping Of America, Sarah Tietz

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

The Age of Discovery travel narratives from the fifteenth and sixteenth century, written by European explorers to the Americas, can be understood not only as narratives, but also as literary maps of the New World. Specifically, Hernán Cortés’s Second Letter in Cartas de Relación exemplifies the ways in which literary cartography helped write the Americas into existence in Europe. Cortés’s map does not reproduce the land he encounters, it creates the space known as America. His letters become a map in three ways. First, Cortés deliberately included descriptions of features of the land and natives that would impress the Christian …

A Diachronic Approach To The Old Spanish Sibilant Merger And Its Impact On Trans-Atlantic Spanish (Part I), Eva NúÑEz-MéNdez Jan 2016

A Diachronic Approach To The Old Spanish Sibilant Merger And Its Impact On Trans-Atlantic Spanish (Part I), Eva NúÑEz-MéNdez

World Languages and Literatures Faculty Publications and Presentations

The evolution of the medieval sibilant phonetic system is indispensable in understanding how original Castilian expanded and evolved on both sides of the Atlantic. At the same time, it helps to distinguish varieties such as Andalusian Spanish, trans-Atlantic Spanish, and Judeo-Spanish, which in many ways constitutes proof of all the diachronic processes happening during and after the late medieval period. The sibilant merger and its resulting graphic confusion represent a crucial chapter in the development of Spanish. This study offers an extensive overview of the evidence, chrono- logy, dialectal divergence, theories of causation, and phonetic background of this merger. Condensing …

Actores Transnacionales: Un Estudio En Cinema Internacional, Lydia Hartlaub

Honors Projects

Hermandad Femenina En El Exilio: Escritura Terapéutica En Cartas Inéditas De Zenobia Camprubí / Women’S Sorority In Exile: Therapeutic Writing In Zenobia Camprubí’S Unpublished Letters, Iker González-Allende

Entailments, Pragmatic Assertion And Mood In Spanish Complements, Errapel Mejías-Bikandi

Spanish Language and Literature Papers

This paper examines a frequently overlooked class of expressions in Spanish that license the subjunctive mood in a complement clause. This class contains expressions such as poco/a/s “few”, menos de “less than” and solo “only”. The goal of the paper is to offer an account of the use of mood with these expressions that incorporates the data under discussion into previous pragmatic accounts of mood based on notions of assertion and informative value. The paper first offers a semantic characterization of this class of expressions that is based on their monotonic properties (Ladusaw 1980, Ladusaw 1983). Next, it explores the …

Neutering Neoliberalism: Masculinities And Gore Capitalism In Rubem Fonseca’S Crime Novels, David William Hancock

Theses and Dissertations

This study presents close readings of Rubem Fonseca’s Agosto (1990), A grande arte (1983), Bufo & Spallanzani (1985), and O seminarista (2009), to suggest they condemn Neoliberalism’s role in creating a global culture of violence, as they problematize its rhetoric of domination and uncover its heteropatriarchal, consumerist ideology, disguised as fact or ‘common-sense.’ The four chapters are divided according to the different theoretical concepts that accompany the four principal texts’ common critique of Neoliberal masculinity, as it functions to uphold the interdependent hierarchies of race, class and gender. Fonseca’s texts also imply the reader's’ complicity in a global culture of …

El Efecto De La Variación Dialectal En El Procesamiento, Kirsten Schanze Jan 2016

El Efecto De La Variación Dialectal En El Procesamiento, Kirsten Schanze

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Lexical variation, or the existence of multiple lexemes that can be used to denote a particular concept, is a phenomenon characteristic of most of the world’s language systems. Often times the source of this variation is difficult to determine, with a variety of inter- and intra-linguistic factors at play. This thesis was conducted with three main goals: 1) to delineate lexical items typical to specific dialects of Spanish and generate country-specific word lists that focus on salient contrasts between the different varieties of the language; 2) to determine whether speakers of particular varieties of Spanish, namely Puerto Rican and Venezuelan …

Indigenista Heroes And Femmes Fatales: Myth-Making In Latin American Literature And Film, Megan O'Neil Jan 2016

Indigenista Heroes And Femmes Fatales: Myth-Making In Latin American Literature And Film, Megan O'Neil

Theses and Dissertations--Hispanic Studies

This dissertation explores myth-making in Latin America by focusing specifically upon four Amerindian and mestizo figures: Doña Bárbara, mestiza protagonist of Rómulo Gallegos’ 1929 novel; Anacaona and Hatuey, Taíno caciques who first appeared in Bartolomé de las Casas’ Brevísima relación de la destrucción de las Indias (1552); and Andrés Chiliquinga, indigenous protagonist of Jorge Icaza’s Huasipungo (1934). The present analysis examines the evolution of these myths from their original appearance to literary and film versions throughout the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries in the Caribbean and Andean regions. The project focuses upon the ways in which artists have interpreted these …
