[Introduction To] Thinking Of The Laity In Late Tudor England, Peter Iver Kaufman Jan 2004

[Introduction To] Thinking Of The Laity In Late Tudor England, Peter Iver Kaufman

Bookshelf

Thinking of the Laity explains why proposals for expanding lay prerogatives failed to shape the Elizabethan religious settlement from the 1560s through the 1580s. It also greatly adds to our understanding of the policy debates that are closely associated with the origins of puritanism, presbyterianism, and congregationalism. This book will be essential reading for people interested in the history of early modern England and in the progress of sixteenth-century religious reform.

The Formation Of The Bible, Steve Allen Jan 2004

The Formation Of The Bible, Steve Allen

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

How could such a diverse group of books written over a period of 1500 years by over 40 different authors from all walks of life on three different continents and in three different languages be included in one single compilation (McDowell, 4)? Yet, this is what the present day Bible consists of The New Testament and the Old Testament were brought together by different means and at different times, but both have been declared complete and exhaustive by the early church and most people today. So, the main question revolves around how these particular sixty-six books (see chart 5) were …

Jesse Knight And His Humbug Mine, J. Michael Hunter Jan 2004

Jesse Knight And His Humbug Mine, J. Michael Hunter

Faculty Publications

Born in Nauvoo, Illinois to faithful Mormon parents, Jesse Knight later withdrew from activity in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). In this biographical sketch, the events associated with his “religious awakening” are recounted, as are the circumstances that led to his amassing a fortune in the mining industry. Considering his wealth to be a stewardship from the Lord, he used it to create jobs for the unemployed, promote education, encourage wholesome recreation, and save the credit of the LDS Church. “Uncle Jesse” was an example of kindness and generosity to all.

Representation In Medieval Canon Law, Kenneth Pennington Jan 2004

Representation In Medieval Canon Law, Kenneth Pennington

Scholarly Articles

Brian Tierney wrote finely about repraesentatio in the medieval councils of the West some twenty years ago. He pointed out that repraesentatio could have three different meanings: The first is symbolic representation or personification, as when a whole community is taken to be figuratively present in the person of its head. The second meaning of our term can be defined as mimesis. Here an assembly is considered to represent a whole society because it faithfully mirrors in its composition all (society's) varied elements. The third meaning of 'representation' is delegation or authorisation.

The last item on this list, jurisprudential concept …

This paper illustrates the way Humanities’ categories have allowed us to read traces of cultural crossing in African fiction since the 70s. Many articles published in Présence Francophone turn the 19th century’s anthropological model around, whilst others oppose Judeo-Christian and African myths. Some propose a monolithic vision of identity, until in-between positions appear, revealing the many elements of identity in a much easier way. Among these components, the Western and African modes of knowing are pointed out by studies relying on the works of Lévi-Strauss, Bachelard and Bakhtine.
