Covenanters Reading Scripture Through History, Mark Safstrom Jan 2016

Covenanters Reading Scripture Through History, Mark Safstrom

Scandinavian Studies: Faculty Scholarship & Creative Works

This 12-page pamphlet was commissioned by the Evangelical Covenant Church as supplemental historical material to accompany a denomination-wide biblical literacy initiative called the "Community Bible Experience" in 2016. Four theologians and historians were asked to collaborated in writing; Michelle Clifton-Soderstrom (North Park Theological Seminary), Christopher Gehrz (Bethel University), Hauna Ondrey (North Park Theological Seminary), and Mark Safstrom (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign). The purpose was to invite Covenant Church members to engage with the biblical reading practices as demonstrated through vignettes in the history of the Evangelical Covenant Church (1885–present), as well as its roots within the Protestant Reformation and …

A Biblical Investigation Of Matriarchal Structures In Ancient Semitic Life, Margaret English De Alminana Jan 2016

A Biblical Investigation Of Matriarchal Structures In Ancient Semitic Life, Margaret English De Alminana

Selected Faculty Publications

This paper shall demonstrate that a gender-stratified template for the leadership of family and government believed to be modeled after ancient Semitic patriarchal structures according to a pattern found in Old Testament biblical texts is erroneous. It shall demonstrate that strong elements of matriarchalism existed alongside of patriarchalism, and that Old Testament texts offer no accurate template for gender-based governance.

Global South Christianity And Adventism: Trends And Implications, Christopher R. Mwashinga Jan 2016

Global South Christianity And Adventism: Trends And Implications, Christopher R. Mwashinga

Andrews University Seminary Student Journal

In recent decades, Christianity has experienced two major phenomena as a religion: its decline in the global North (Europe and North America) and its rise in the global South (Africa, Asia, and South America). The Seventh-day Adventist Church as a denomination has experienced similar trends. The global South has become the home to the majority of Adventists in the world and the global North is now home to only a minority. Studies show that this southward movement in Christian and Adventist demographics may continue for several decades. Studies also indicate a steady growth of other world religions on the continent …

Anabaptists And Discipleship, Trevor O'Reggio Jan 2016

Anabaptists And Discipleship, Trevor O'Reggio

Faculty Publications

At the risk of oversimplification, the central concept for Luther was trust, and for Calvin it was obedience, but for the Evangelical Radicals it was discipleship. The Radicals agreed with the magisterial Reformers about justification by faith but they were not willing to stop there. Their concern was about what followed justification - character development, the ethical life, and where love predominates. They criticized bitterly contemporary Catholicism and Protestantism for their lack of emphasis on the regenerate life and love. Karlstadt, one of their leading theologian, while agreeing with Luther about God’s grace, felt Luther had not gone far enough. …

Thecla Penetrates The Popular Perception, Leah Jo M. Shelton Jan 2016

Thecla Penetrates The Popular Perception, Leah Jo M. Shelton

Audre Lorde Prize

This paper analyzes The Acts of Paul and Thecla, an early Christian writing, within the framework of gender in antique Rome. Roman gender was based on performance, which is the basis of each character's gender construction in this story. Thecla undergoes a radical transformation from a passive female, preparing to be wed, to an active, ideal male who controls her independence and performs public oratory. In contrast, Paul, who appears as an ideal male at the beginning of the story, is "unmanned" by Thecla when she ultimately defies her female categorization. The Acts of Paul and Thecla exhibits the …

Adventist Theological-Missiology: Contextualization In Mission And Ministry, Wagner Kuhn Jan 2016

Adventist Theological-Missiology: Contextualization In Mission And Ministry, Wagner Kuhn

Journal of the Adventist Theological Society

"...the purpose of theology and mission is to demonstrate in word and deed, in theory and in practice, the everlasting gospel (Rev. 14). It is to aim at the cross of Calvary, declaring and presenting with power and effectiveness the “Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world” (Jn.1:29). Paul demonstrates this theology and this mission by getting as close as possible to people in order to save them for Christ. He says: “I have become all things to all men so that by all possible means I might save some” (1 Cor. 9:22). This is the …
