The Effects Of The Great Depression Upon Several Areas Of The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod, Edwin R. Schwanke Jun 1957

The Effects Of The Great Depression Upon Several Areas Of The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod, Edwin R. Schwanke

Bachelor of Divinity

The economic instability and widespread unemployment throughout the United States following the Stock Market crash of October, 1929 had a profound effect upon nearly every phase of life and activity in this land. Such an economic recession would also have an effect on the churches, for the church exists in the economic and social order. Serious fluctuations in the economy of the nation are reflected in the economic activities. The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod experienced many of the difficulties which were common to the churches of America during the Great Depression. This paper will trace some of these effects upon several …

The Political And Economic Thought Of Walter A Maier, Herman Otten Jun 1957

The Political And Economic Thought Of Walter A Maier, Herman Otten

Bachelor of Divinity

Although most of the 25,000 letters Maier received every week at The height of his popularity, were of a favorab1e nature, he was labeled by some as a Fascist, a Nazi, anti-semitic, a Republican, a Democrat, and with other contradictory accusations. This study was made to discover just what his political and economic views were. He was neither a politician nor an economist but he did believe that in every area of human activity the truth must be affirmed. Since Maier often violently contradicted the political and economic views of many clergymen and other intellectuals, this thesis will also endeavor …

A Study Of The Effects Of Christianization Upon The Religious Structure Of Primitive Society As Reflected Among The Ibo People Of Southeasteren Nigeria West Africa-, Duane Mehl Jun 1957

A Study Of The Effects Of Christianization Upon The Religious Structure Of Primitive Society As Reflected Among The Ibo People Of Southeasteren Nigeria West Africa-, Duane Mehl

Bachelor of Divinity

As the title of this thesis indicates, the problem under investigation is the effects of Christianization upon the religious structure of primitive society, especially in so far as these effects have been noted among the Ibo peoples of southeastern Nigeria. The emphasis is to be placed upon the word "society." We are interested in the religious beliefs of the African people because they profoundly influence the formation of the tribe. We are not interested in these beliefs from a theological point of view. This means that we shall not delve into the theological implications which are involved in mission activity …

Popular Religious Thought In Medieval England As Reflected In The Mystery Play Cycles Of York, Toweley, Coventry, And Chester, Kenneth Streufert Jun 1957

Popular Religious Thought In Medieval England As Reflected In The Mystery Play Cycles Of York, Toweley, Coventry, And Chester, Kenneth Streufert

Bachelor of Divinity

The particular plays that have been selected to form the basis for this study are especially well suited for this purpose. They are, first of all, plays which enjoyed a long popularity (from the early 1300’s to the late l500's). Consequently their validity as reflections or contemporary religious thinking is strengthened. In the second place, these particular plays were produced and performed, not by professional dramatists and actors, but by the ordinary people of England. And so their claim of being the reflection of the thoughts of the common people is also strengthened. In addition, since these plays are examples …

The Reorganized Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saints And The Goal Of Zion, William H. Bartels Jun 1957

The Reorganized Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saints And The Goal Of Zion, William H. Bartels

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of this paper is not primarily to compare the two groups, but to give special consideration to the smaller Independence group. But this study will attempt to point up more clearly the fact that they are different, and may perhaps encourage further research in the field of the study of the founder, Joseph Smith, Jr., his work, his writings, and his various followers.

Social And Political Thinking In The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod From 1920-1955, Arthur Simon Jun 1957

Social And Political Thinking In The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod From 1920-1955, Arthur Simon

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The primary aim of this thesis is to give a description of the social and political thinking within The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod during the years 1920 to 1955. Obviously the purpose is more than that, however, since few people are interested in describing simply for description's sake. The implication is that such a description has to do with a crucial area in the theology and life of the Church. This in turn implies that even a description can serve the useful purpose of giving a better understanding of what has been thought and why it has been thought,. and can:, …

Labor, Industry, And The Church, David S. Schuller Apr 1957

Labor, Industry, And The Church, David S. Schuller

Concordia Theological Monthly

The church stood amazed before the rising form of the industrial giant. Its size was frightening enough, but its two heads of unionism and management struck terror into her heart. The church felt she should say something to the monster. But then what could she say? It certainly didn't look like a membership prospect. And so the church pretended she didn't see it. But the church's heart continued to pound. And way down deep she felt guilty. She had a message - even for such two-headed giants. And she should be speaking.

The Apostolate: Its Enduring Significance In The Apostolic Word, Martin H. Franzmann Mar 1957

The Apostolate: Its Enduring Significance In The Apostolic Word, Martin H. Franzmann

Concordia Theological Monthly

Our Lutheran Confessions state: "We believe, reach, and confess that the sole rule and standard according to which all dogmas together with all teachers should be estimated and judged are the prophetic and apostolic Scriptures of the Old and of the New Testament alone." In using the word "apostolic," they are confessing to something which is not merely a historical but also a theological entity. For the conception "apostle" and "apostolic" is one which is determined entirely by its relationship to the Lord, who establishes the apostolate and sends the apostles.

Contemporary Church Architecture In The Lutheran Church Of America, Arlis J. Ehlen Mar 1957

Contemporary Church Architecture In The Lutheran Church Of America, Arlis J. Ehlen

Concordia Theological Monthly

A great many of the churches built for Lutheran congregations in recent years show the strong influence of contemporary developments in architecture. These buildings usually depart so noticeably from the traditional ecclesiastical styles that certain questions quite naturally come to the mind of the interested observer: I. What originally led these congregations to choose the contemporary idiom for their new churches? II. How, exactly, do the modern churches differ from the older ones, and in what ways are they still similar? III. How have church members, community, and visitors reacted toward the new churches after they were built and in …

Notes On Translation Of The Malayalam Bible, Herbert M. Zorn Feb 1957

Notes On Translation Of The Malayalam Bible, Herbert M. Zorn

Concordia Theological Monthly

These notes are designed to point out some of the difficulties of the translator's task, especially if he must transfer thought content into a language that is separated from the original in point of form, culture, distance, and time. It is not the writer's intention to present an exhaustive study of the Bible in Malayalam. Nor does he maintain that the problems dealt with are the most urgent and vexing. Peculiarities of Malayalam make it difficult to make clear some of the vexing problems to one not familiar with the language. Enough examples, however, will be cited to remind us …

The Church Resists The Nazis, G J. Gerike Jun 1956

The Church Resists The Nazis, G J. Gerike

Bachelor of Divinity

It shall be the burden of this paper to try to paint a. fair1y accurate picture of the Church conditions under the Nazis, and to show that the Church did resist the Nazis, but perhaps the resistance was not as virile as it might have been. Furthermore, we are limiting the scope of this paper to the answering of the above posed questions in their relationship to the Protestant Church, more particularly the Lutheran State Church.

The Peace-Offering Of The Old Testament, John Dede Jun 1956

The Peace-Offering Of The Old Testament, John Dede

Bachelor of Divinity

The subject with which we are here concerned is the Old Testament peace-offering. To the New Testament Christian, Who no longer relies for his salvation upon ritual sacrifices, but rather trusts in the atoning work of Christ, that subject may seem of little value. But to a Christian who realizes that his faith is founded in the Word of God in the Scriptures, both Old and New Testaments, any inquiry into the subject matter of that Book becomes important. As the apostle says, “These things were written for our learning.”

John R Mott, His Work With The Student Christian Movement To The Founding Of The World's Student Christian Federation, John K. Sorensen Jun 1956

John R Mott, His Work With The Student Christian Movement To The Founding Of The World's Student Christian Federation, John K. Sorensen

Bachelor of Divinity

In order to keep the unity of the work before the eyes of the reader the author shall endeavor to point out in the course of Mott's early life his frequent allusions to the dream of a student world united under the banner of Christ. Why should the student be singled out for such a union? The answer is found in the life of Mott.

A History Of Concordia College, New Orleans, Henry Niermann Jun 1956

A History Of Concordia College, New Orleans, Henry Niermann

Bachelor of Divinity

The problem dealt with in this paper has led up to the question, Why did the school close? A threefold answer has been offered: (a) Conditions in the city of New Orleans did not permit the expansion of the school; (b) The Lutheran people in the South did not gift proper support to the school; ( c) There was a lack of measures on the part of the leaders to avert a crisis.

The report was written with a hope that some of the problems and difficulties which face secondary schools may be met, and that the schools of the …

Factors Which Influenced The Development Of Jonathan Edwards, Donald L. Biggs Jun 1956

Factors Which Influenced The Development Of Jonathan Edwards, Donald L. Biggs

Bachelor of Divinity

"'The real life of Jonathan Edwards was the life of his Mind.” Her s the perfect example of a writer who emerged out of the passions, the feuds, and the anxieties of his society. Thus, in dealing with Jonathan Edwards and the thought which influenced New England for nearly a century after his death, it is necessary to deal first of all with the passions, the feuds, and the anxieties from which he arose. Without these there can really be no true understanding of' the man and his thought. It is legitimate to ask the question, “What are the factors …

The History Of Lutheran City Missions In Saint Louis, John Paul Ellwanger Jun 1956

The History Of Lutheran City Missions In Saint Louis, John Paul Ellwanger

Bachelor of Divinity

As great men often disappear in the shadows of still greater men, so City Missions in St. Louis has lost the public spotlight to these other more brightly shining lights. It will be one of the purposes of this thesis to throw as much light as possible on the significance of Lutheran City Missions in Lutheran life in St. Louis during the first part of the twentieth century.

A Basic History Of Lutheranism In America, Lewis W. Spitz Jun 1956

A Basic History Of Lutheranism In America, Lewis W. Spitz

Concordia Theological Monthly

Abdel Ross Wentz, the author of this book, may be regarded as the dean of historians of the Lutheran Church in America. Among the significant contributions to the history of Lutheranism in this country is his Lutheran Church in America History, the precursor of the present volume. His History of the Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Maryland and The Beginnings of the German Element in York County, Pennsylvania, have set a pattern for other historians, demonstrating the kind of work that must be done elsewhere before a final and comprehensive history of Lutheranism can be written. The same may be said …

The Lutheran World Federation, Gilbert A. Thiele Jun 1956

The Lutheran World Federation, Gilbert A. Thiele

Concordia Theological Monthly

In the years immediately after World War I, tentative attempts were made to establish contact for purposes of fellowship and understanding between European, North American, Asian, and other Lutheran bodies in the world. The first real meeting of representatives of Lutheran churches throughout the world took place in 1923 at Eisenach, Germany. Here 160 delegates from twenty-two nations met August 19-24, 1923, in order to explore and express their unity of faith and spiritual kinship. The way for this gathering and all that followed from it "was prepared by the General Evangelical Lutheran Conference, which, although at first confined to …

The History And Development Of The Hindu Scriptures, Robert John Fiore Jun 1956

The History And Development Of The Hindu Scriptures, Robert John Fiore

Bachelor of Divinity

This study is designed to be an introduction to the Hindu Scriptures. As a by-product of this, it is unavoidably an introduction to Hinduism. As such, it should be used by the student as a stepping stone prior to branching out into the midstream of Hindu theology.

Christianity And The Mystery Religions Wit Special Reference To Mithraism, Edwin Lehman Jun 1956

Christianity And The Mystery Religions Wit Special Reference To Mithraism, Edwin Lehman

Bachelor of Divinity

The problem of the relationship of the mystery religions to Christianity Is no mere academic question. While the common layman has very likely never heard of the mystery religions he at least has been indirectly influenced by thoughts which these re1igions have provoked. The entire modern school of liberal criticism is based to a greater or lesser degree upon the thesis that Christianity was merely an outgrowth of the mystery-religions, one which evolved to a higher degree to be sure, but one which nevertheless borrowed most of its theological content and form directly from the mystery religions. It is this …

The Synagogue As The Center Of The Sabbath Worship At The Time Of Christ, Gerald B. Wunrow Jun 1956

The Synagogue As The Center Of The Sabbath Worship At The Time Of Christ, Gerald B. Wunrow

Bachelor of Divinity

The question which the writer has posed and has endeavored in some degree to answer in this study is: What was the synagogue like as a house of worship at the time of Christ? By way of shedding light on this question the study includes a brief survey of the origin and historica1 development of the synagogue, an examination of synagogue architecture in the early centuries of the common era, and a study of the Sabbath worship service as it probably took place at the time of Christ. The writer is fully aware that for want of exact historical and …

The Policies And The Practices Of Archbishop Laud, Stephan John Korinko Jun 1956

The Policies And The Practices Of Archbishop Laud, Stephan John Korinko

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of this investigation was to discover, if possible, the actual policies and practices of William Laud while he was the Archbishop of Canterbury. It is unfair to have only accusations leveled against; Laud. It is, likewise, just as unfair to have only a glowing account of Laud 's life. For these reasons the writer has attempted to discover what the policies of Laud were concerning the church and the state, as well as his method and practice in applying these principles to the church of his day.

Jakob Matthias Buehler: Conservative Missionary And Theologian, Eldon R. Stohs Jun 1956

Jakob Matthias Buehler: Conservative Missionary And Theologian, Eldon R. Stohs

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of the paper is not so much to sketch a history, as to see whether the difficulties Rev. Buehler encountered were a result of his liberalism or conservatism.

The World Council Of Churches, Gilbert A. Thiele May 1956

The World Council Of Churches, Gilbert A. Thiele

Concordia Theological Monthly

The World Council of Churches represents the confluence of previous ecumenical movements. The two most important streams of activity that merged in this broader and deeper endeavor are the Faith and Order Movement (Conference) and the Life and Work Conference. Each of these deserves our attention.

Cranmer's Legacy, Carl S. Meyer Apr 1956

Cranmer's Legacy, Carl S. Meyer

Concordia Theological Monthly

At Oxford in the nineteenth century at the height of the Tractarian Movement, the Evangelicals believed that the Tractarians had shown themselves opposed to the principles of the Reformation. Partially to counteract this movement a proposal was made to erect a memorial to the Reformation martyrs. Cranmer, Latimer, and Ridley- the three men who had been burnt opposite Balliol College -were to be honored especially. Latimer and Ridley had died together there on October 16, 1555. Five months later, on the 21st of March, 1556, "in the same place where Ridley and Latimer had suffered," Thomas Cranmer was burnt. The …
