Pius Xii, A Roman From Rome, Walter G. Tillmanns May 1959

Pius Xii, A Roman From Rome, Walter G. Tillmanns

Concordia Theological Monthly

"E Romano di Roma," he is a Roman from Rome, the joyful multitudes shouted. For the first time in over 200 years a native Roman had been elected Bishop of Rome. The time was 5:30 P. M., the day March 2, 1939, the 63d birthday of Eugenio Maria Giuseppe Giovanni Pacelli.

Aids To Bible Study: The Septuagint-Its History, Frederick W. Danker Apr 1959

Aids To Bible Study: The Septuagint-Its History, Frederick W. Danker

Concordia Theological Monthly

"Gentlemen, have you a Septuagint?" Ferdinand Hitzig, eminent Biblical critic and Hebraist, used to say to his class. "If not, sell all you have, and buy a Septuagint." Current Biblical studies reflect the accuracy of his judgment. This and the next installment are therefore dedicated to the task of helping the Septuagint come alive for Biblical students who may be neglecting its contributions to the total theological picture, for clergymen who have forgotten its interpretive possibilities, and for all who have just begun to see how new things can be brought out of old.

The Seventeenth Century Dogmaticians As Philosophers, A. C. Ahlen Mar 1959

The Seventeenth Century Dogmaticians As Philosophers, A. C. Ahlen

Concordia Theological Monthly

To assert that philosophy and theology are not identical would obviously be unnecessary in addressing myself to the present group; but to remind you that there are vast areas of common interest shared by these two disciplines is probably not superfluous. Living as we do in a time when reason is often ridiculed and up-to-the- minute theologians present highly rationalized arguments in favor of antirational views, we need to remind ourselves that philosophy is inescapable. The moment we reflect critically upon our experiences and beliefs, we begin to philosophize.

Spiritual Marriage In The Early Church: A Suggested Interpretation Of 1 Cor. 7:36-38, Roland H. Sedoldt Mar 1959

Spiritual Marriage In The Early Church: A Suggested Interpretation Of 1 Cor. 7:36-38, Roland H. Sedoldt

Concordia Theological Monthly

There is evidence of the ascetic attitude in the early Christian Church.

The feeling grew that the ordinary life with its natural duties and obligations is incompatible with the life lived in the spirit. Possession of the spirit requires a life which is extraordinary, where there is no room for worldly affairs, particularly for marriage.

Spiritual Marriage In The Early Church: A Suggested Interpretation Of 1 Cor. 7:36-38, Roland H. Sedoldt Feb 1959

Spiritual Marriage In The Early Church: A Suggested Interpretation Of 1 Cor. 7:36-38, Roland H. Sedoldt

Concordia Theological Monthly

In his commentary on First Corinthians, Karl Heim writes concerning 7:36: "Now comes the passage the interpretation of which has always caused the greatest difficulties. We are especially handicapped in not having the list of questions which the Corinthians addressed to Paul."

The lack of conclusive materials to reconstruct the problem in Corinth has led to an oversimplification. The ancient exegetes interpreted this section as a father-daughter problem in permitting or prohibiting marriage. Until recent times this interpretation was almost universally adopted.

Religious Influences In Louisiana Elections (1924-1956), Benjamin Franklin Veit Jun 1958

Religious Influences In Louisiana Elections (1924-1956), Benjamin Franklin Veit

Bachelor of Divinity

This paper attempts to discover the existence, if any, of religious influences in Louisiana elections since 1924. Several reasons bear upon both the selection of the state and the period. The author chose the State of Louisiana because it occupies a rather peculiar place in American politics. Typically a Southern state, Louisiana lacks, at least on the surface, a two-party system. Hence the complication of conflict between party loyalty and religious affiliation is removed. Louisiana is typical or the states of the South in that it contains a considerable Roman Catholic population. Indeed, the National Council of Churches has listed …

The Influence Of The Babylonian Captivity On The Religion Of The Jews, Arthur C. Dueker Jun 1958

The Influence Of The Babylonian Captivity On The Religion Of The Jews, Arthur C. Dueker

Bachelor of Divinity

It is the purpose of this paper to uncover the importance and the influence of this exile upon the religion of the Jews, more especially, to understand the changes which the Babylonian Captivity brought upon the religion of the Jews. For it was during the exile in Babylonia that the Jews changed as a people, as a nation, and, what is most important of all, as a religious society. These changes and developments, which occurred during the exile, have remained until the present day and are of the utmost importance in our understanding of the Jewish people.

Chrysostom's Theology Of The Priesthood, Albert Hahn Gaal Jun 1958

Chrysostom's Theology Of The Priesthood, Albert Hahn Gaal

Bachelor of Divinity

Perhaps he can give only a beginning of an ideal for the construction of a theology of the ministry. The Church may find in Chrysostom a series of insights neglected over the years through carelessness. Then this is the problem which faces the Church--to study Chrysostom's homilies and basic writings, perhaps gathering from then new, important insights that can help to make the work of the ministry more effective in the confusing days which the Church faces in the Atomic Age.

The Influence Of Thomas Cranmer On Henry Viii And Through Him On The English Reformation, John Edward Golisch Jun 1958

The Influence Of Thomas Cranmer On Henry Viii And Through Him On The English Reformation, John Edward Golisch

Bachelor of Divinity

The problem this paper seeks to answer is: What influence did Archbishop Cranmer—particularly the personal character of Cranmer—have on King Henry VIII and through him on the English Reformation?

The Formation Of The United Church Of Canada, Milton H. Riemer Jun 1958

The Formation Of The United Church Of Canada, Milton H. Riemer

Bachelor of Divinity

After twenty-five years of negotiations between the Methodist, Congregational, and Presbyterian Churches of Canada, the organic union of these three bodies into The United Church of Canada was consummated on June 10, 1925. This thesis shall deal primarily with the twenty-five years preceding the union. Of necessity we shall have to look briefly at the present-day characteristics of The United Church of Canada if we wish to arrive at any conclusions regarding the success or failure of the venture. Furthermore, since this is to be primarily an historical presentation, there are large areas regarding these twenty-five years before union which …

A Comparison Of The Code Of Hammurabi And Mosaic Law, Ernst R. Pflug Jun 1958

A Comparison Of The Code Of Hammurabi And Mosaic Law, Ernst R. Pflug

Bachelor of Divinity

As the title of this thesis indicates, the problem we wish to explore is the apparent similarities between the Code of Hammurabi and the Mosaic Law. We want to explore both bodies of law and take note of the apparent similarities, and then try to account for them. In the search for a better understanding of the similarities, we shall not limit ourselves to the texts of the two codes but we shall also consider the historical background, cultures, and personalities responsible for them.

Historical Evidence For Infant Baptism, John D. Frey Jun 1958

Historical Evidence For Infant Baptism, John D. Frey

Bachelor of Divinity

Shortly before He ascended into heaven, Jesus gave this command: "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost. The Book of Acts presents this command in action. “So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls” But nowhere in Scripture do we find the specific command, "Baptize infants.” Nor do we find a statement which specifically says that infants were baptized. This has caused many people to wonder about infants. Are they also to …

The Influence Which The Lapsed Had On The Concepts Of Baptism And Penance In The Writings Of Cyprian And Tertullian, Louis Oetting

Bachelor of Divinity

This thesis has as its purpose the investigation of the concepts of baptism and penance during the times of persecution, in order to determine whether those Christians who lapsed during the persecutions had significant effects on the development of these concepts.

The World Of Jesus In The Words Of Jesus, Robert L. Einspahr Jun 1958

The World Of Jesus In The Words Of Jesus, Robert L. Einspahr

Bachelor of Divinity

The scope of this thesis is limited to the words of Jesus as found in a Red-letter edition of the Authorized Version of the Bible. From these words of Jesus, terms and phrases were chosen that had, or appeared to have allusions to the world of the first century after Christ. These terms and phrases were then arranged into related categories as indicated by the chapter headings. Intensive reading was then done in the works and writings of missionaries and travelers in Palestine, of professional archaeologists and Orientalists. In this reading special attention was given to data which shed light …

An Historical Study Of The Lutheran Sources Of The Book Of Common Prayer Of 1549, Arthur A. Preisinger Jun 1958

An Historical Study Of The Lutheran Sources Of The Book Of Common Prayer Of 1549, Arthur A. Preisinger

Bachelor of Divinity

The question is, of course, how much influence did the German Reformers exercise over the English? Were their principles of liturgical reform the same? It will be the purpose of this research to try to discover just how much the Reformers in England depended on the influence of Lutheran reform; how much they actually took over into the Book of Common Prayer from the German service books. It cannot be denied that the Lutheran Reformation exerted a tremendous influence in England. Was this merely apolitical influence? Or did Lutheran theology penetrate deeply into the English system at that time?

Origen's Doctrine Of God As Relected In De Principiis, Carl A. Volz Jun 1958

Origen's Doctrine Of God As Relected In De Principiis, Carl A. Volz

Bachelor of Divinity

Although Origen's theology in the narrow, sense can hardly be called a synthesis of Christian dogma in the third century, yet an appreciation of him as a systematician requires an acquaintance with the theology of his predecessors. De Principiis did not evolve spontaneously from the mind of this great Alexandrian, but consciously or unconsciously drew upon the speculations and the formulations of the Fathers. For this reason a section has been included giving in very brief detail the theological atmosphere of the century preceding Origen, ending with his great North African contemporary, Tertullian.

The Interdenominational Relations Of The United Lutheran Church In America, Carl Bornmann Jun 1958

The Interdenominational Relations Of The United Lutheran Church In America, Carl Bornmann

Bachelor of Divinity

Among the various American Lutheran bodies, the United Lutheran Church in America is one of the best examples of a large communion which officially acknowledges the Symbols of Lutheranism and at the same time maintains a relative extensive series of relationships with various interdenominational Christian groups. This study will ignore the simple question: do these activities constitute unionism? Instead, this study will ask more objective question which cannot be answered with a simple (and often dogmatic) yes or no.

The History Of Lutheran High Schools In St. Louis (1855-1946), Dean Greunke Jun 1958

The History Of Lutheran High Schools In St. Louis (1855-1946), Dean Greunke

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of this study is to give to the reader a history of Lutheran secondary education as it developed in St. Louis. The study may prove to be a review for those who are acquainted with the Lutheran high school question in this city, and, at the same time, it may fill certain gaps within the framework of the entire picture for those who are not familiar with it.

History Of The India Mission Of The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod 1945-1957, James Arthur Fergin Jun 1958

History Of The India Mission Of The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod 1945-1957, James Arthur Fergin

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of the research presented in the following pages is to enable the writer to serve in a better capacity as a missionary in a foreign country. The collecting and correlating of the various factors in the development and history of the India Mission during the past thirteen years has been a wonderful opportunity for greater preparation in entering foreign mission work. Another purpose for this research is to bring the history of our Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod’s India Mission to a close. Missionary Elmer E. Griesse presented a thesis to Washington University, St. Louis, on the history of the …

The History Of The Relationship Of The Wisconsin Synod To The Missouri Synod Until 1925, David Schmiel

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The purpose of this thesis will be to examine the events and, as much as possible, the motives that finally led to fellowship between the two synods; in addition the fifty- odd years of struggle for complete union will be surveyed with a view to indicating the seal of the zeal of the attempt, the frustrations, and some possible reasons for the ultimate failure.

The Tennessee Synod--It's History And Church Polity, Alvin Kollmann Jun 1958

The Tennessee Synod--It's History And Church Polity, Alvin Kollmann

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

In considering the factors that played an important role in causing the establishment of the Tennessee Synod, it is necessary to consider the conditions in the Lutheran Church in .America especially during the years between 1800 and 1820. The conditions that must be considered are, in the order in which they will be treated in this chapter, rationalism, unionism, the language problem, the training of pastors, education and literature available at the time, and revivalism. A few observations on the pros and cons about the Tennessee Synod joining the General Synod or remaining out of that organization will then conclude …

Career Of The Reformer, Theodore Hoyer May 1958

Career Of The Reformer, Theodore Hoyer

Concordia Theological Monthly

Under this subtitle four volumes of the new American edition of Luther's Works will be issued; the first one, Vol. :31, has just come from the press. (The earlier volumes [1-30], four of which have appeared to date, will contain Luther's expositions of various Biblical books.) These four volumes (31-34) will contain what are usually called Luther's Reformation writings: "All the significant and representative writings of Luther which are concerned with his career as a reformer" (31, x f.). The purpose is to show in his own words why and how he became the Reformer, what he did for the …

The Modern Papacy, Carl S. Meyer Apr 1958

The Modern Papacy, Carl S. Meyer

Concordia Theological Monthly

Under the caption "The Modern Papacy" the popes of the last century are included. A span of a hundred years (112 to be exact) is long enough to permit one to see and evaluate the main events, to delineate the chief movements and trends, and to point out the main currents of thought. We suffer in part from contemporaneousness, but the contemporary within the perspective of a century may not be in too distorted a focus.

Christ Frees And Unites: The Third Lutheran World Federation Assembly, Hanns Lilje Dec 1957

Christ Frees And Unites: The Third Lutheran World Federation Assembly, Hanns Lilje

Concordia Theological Monthly

The third assembly of the Lutheran World Federation, held in Minneapolis, August 15-25, 1957, sends Christian greetings to all Lutheran congregations in the world. Our hearts are filled with gratitude and joy. We are grateful to God for the rich blessings which He granted us throughout these days. It is with joy and affection that we think of the fellowship with so many brethren and sisters from all over the world.

Some Aspects Of The Asian Situation And Their Significance For Training For Service To The Church, R. Pearce Beaver Nov 1957

Some Aspects Of The Asian Situation And Their Significance For Training For Service To The Church, R. Pearce Beaver

Concordia Theological Monthly

The revival of the ancient religions of Asia is one of the most important factors in the international situation which has developed since World War II. It may be regarded as part of a current worldwide revival of religion, or, on the other hand, there may be some ground to think that the Asian development stimulated a world movement. Religion is now more important as a factor in national and international affairs than has been the case for many centuries. The Asian churchmen, in the book Christianity and the Asian Revolution, state: "Nationalism imparts a new interpretation to religion. Instead …

Robert Barnes And Wittenberg, N. S. Tjernagel Sep 1957

Robert Barnes And Wittenberg, N. S. Tjernagel

Concordia Theological Monthly

From the year 1521, when Henry VIII attacked the theology of Martin Luther in his celebrated Assertio septem sacramentorum, to 1540, when he reiterated his theological Romanism by ordering the execution of Thomas Cromwell and Dr. Robert Barnes, English policy respecting Lutheranism went full cycle. Between those dates on which the conservative position of Henry VIII was so emphatically stated, the king of England departed from orthodoxy and came very near to espousing the theology of the Lutheran reformers of Wittenberg, Germany. The royal dalliance with heresy during those years was not unconnected with the king's success in securing his …

Papyrus Sixty-Six, Martin H. Scharlemann Aug 1957

Papyrus Sixty-Six, Martin H. Scharlemann

Concordia Theological Monthly

The Arabs who came across some fifty rolls of papyrus in the Fayum district of Egypt, back in 1778, burned them because they could find no purchasers and because they gave forth a sweet aromatic smell as they were consumed by fire. Only one roll escaped this tragic fate and was published as the Charta Borgiana, containing an account of the labors of the peasants along the Nile at Arsinoe for the year A. D. 191-192. It was not until 1889 to 1890, less than seventy-five years ago, that a beginning was made in the systematic exploration and study of …

Sir John Oldcastle Reconsidered, Rudolph Fiehler Aug 1957

Sir John Oldcastle Reconsidered, Rudolph Fiehler

Concordia Theological Monthly

From among the Puritan saints whose lives are told in John Foxe's Acts and Monuments of These Latter Days, it has not been the fashion for some time to single out Sir John Oldcastle, "the good Lord Cobham," as a special example of heroism and piety. Writers of history have become accustomed to set down this high-placed follower of John Wyclif as a hot-headed adventurer whose intemperate ambition led him to bring about a foolhardy armed uprising against his liege, the gallant and pious Henry V. Shakespeare scholars have had an interest in Sir John Oldcastle because, according to an …

Infant Baptism In The Early Chrisitan Church, Lowell Edgar Eckert Jun 1957
