Dualism And Psychosemantics: Holography And Pansematism In Early Buddhist Philosophy, Federico Divino
Dualism And Psychosemantics: Holography And Pansematism In Early Buddhist Philosophy, Federico Divino
Comparative Philosophy
In the Indian philosophical debate, the relationship between the structure of knowledge and external reality has been a persistent issue. This debate has been particularly prominent in Buddhism, as evidenced by the earliest Buddhist attestations in the Pāli canon, where reality is described as a perceptual defection. The world (loka) is perceived through cognition (citta), and the theme of designation (paññatti) is central to the analysis of the Abhidhamma. Buddhism can be viewed as navigating between nominalism and cognitive normativism, as it deconstructs language, which is seen as an obfuscating element that separates the subject from the world. In this …
(Dis)Locating Meaning: Toward A Hermeneutical Response In Education To Religiously Inspired Extremism, Farid Panjwani
(Dis)Locating Meaning: Toward A Hermeneutical Response In Education To Religiously Inspired Extremism, Farid Panjwani
Institute for Educational Development, Karachi
A key epistemological assumption in the ideologies of many of the groups termed extremist is that there is an unmediated access to a Divine Will. Driven by this assumption, and facilitated by several other factors, a range of coercive actions (including violence) to force others into submission to the perceived Will of God are seen as justified by some of these groups. A consideration of how religion is discussed in various contexts, from seminaries and schools to media and policy discourses, shows that this assumption about unmediated access to Divine Will is widely shared and that most children grow up …

Apocryphal Evidence For The 40-Day Mission Of Christ
Apocryphal Evidence For The 40-Day Mission Of Christ
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
In his book Mormonism and Early Christianity, Hugh W. Nibley discusses how the early apocryphal texts contain an impressive body of evidence that has direct bearing on questions concerning the his- · toricity of the 40-day ministry of Jesus Christ (see Acts 1:3).
Is Farms A Commercial Entity?
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
Just over two years ago, FARMS began publishing books on its own rather than in partnership with other publishers. In part that decision was made in order to give FARMS more editorial control over its publications. We also wanted to try to reach a broader audience by marketing our books ourselves, in the hopes that focusing solely on distributing our own books might be a more effective way to reach more people than getting lost in the larger marketing efforts of a larger company (the jury is still out on that issue).

New Journal Studies Ancient Transoceanic Travel
New Journal Studies Ancient Transoceanic Travel
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
The inaugural issue of a new scholarly journal of interest to students of the Book of Mormon has recently become available. Volume 1 of Pre-Columbiana: A Journal of Long-Distance Contacts is a double issue (June and December 1998) of 160 pages. The journal is the product of two distinct streams of interest in the topic of ancient transoceanic travel. On one hand, the key contributors are senior academic scholars who have a long record of research and publication on this subject. Believing there is substantial evidence for such early voyages, these people have long contradicted the orthodox view that no …

The papers that were presented (published as King Benjamin's Speech: "That Ye May Learn Wisdom") constituted the most substantial collection of studies on this powerful and fascinating speech.

Thorne, presents the FARMS Research Updates of the 1990s, plus some similar short notes from the Journal of Book of Mormon Studies, in a handy new collection (see the enclosed order form).

Gnosticism And The Loss Of Prophecy In The Early Christian Church
Gnosticism And The Loss Of Prophecy In The Early Christian Church
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
In his book The World and the Prophets, Hugh W. Nibley considers the historical role of Gnostics and their influence on the early Christian church. He explains that in the great Gnostic revolution of the second century, the whole orientation of the church changed completely. What brought this about? It was the ceasing of prophetic voices. The continuing demand in the church for the spiritual gifts, especially the gift of prophecy, gave rise to an army of quacks and fakirs who, though discredited in time, left their mark permanently and conspicuously on the Christian church. These were the Gnostics, …

More On Glowing Stones, John A. Tvedtnes
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
In July 1992 INSIGHTS reported the development of radioluminescent lights that resemble the shining stones used by the Jaredites (Ether 2:19-3:6; 6:2-3, 10). Made of a highly porous silica matrix called aerogel, these modern lights-whose life expectancy is 20 years-employ tritium gas to produce beta radiation that causes a phosphor such as zinc sulfide to glow.

Journal Looks At Enigmatic Tree Of Life Stone
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
In the early 1950s archaeologist M. Wells Jakeman claimed that a carved stone monument unearthed in Izapa, Mexico, in 1941 depicted Lehi's vision of the tree of life as reported in the Book of Mormon. As is true for any archaeological find, the accuracy of that initial assessment of the stone dubbed Izapa Stela 5 will either stand or begin to fall in light of further evidence and study, though a definitive determination regarding the stela may simply not be possible.

John The Baptist And The Keys Of Baptism, John A. Tvedtnes
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
The Latter-day Saint concept of priesthood keys is not well documented in the Bible. A single passage has Jesus Christ promising to give Peter "the keys of the kingdom of heaven" (Matthew 16:19), while the book of Revelation indicates that Christ held "the keys of hell and of death" and "the key of David" (Revelation 1:18; 3:7; see Isaiah 22:22). There is no mention of keys in connection with John the Baptist.

The Psalm Of Nephi As A Post-Lehi Document, John W. Welch
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
Building on ideas presented in the last three FARMS newsletters, this update considers one example of how Nephi's small plates account reflects the time and circumstances in which it was written. Nephi's masterful meditation in 2 Nephi 4:16-35 becomes even more poignant and vivid if we recognize that this psalm was written while Nephi was feeling painfully vulnerable after losing his father.

The Good Samaritan: A Type And Shadow Of The Plan Of Salvation
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
"The Good Samaritan: A Type and Shadow of the Plan of Salvation," by John W. Welch, is an insightful analysis of that well-known parable. Welch's research shows that since the early days of Christianity, the parable of the Good Samaritan was understood as an extensive allegory: the man who went down from Jerusalem to Jericho and fell among robbers represents mankind's fall from paradise into a world of sin. The Good Samaritan represents the Savior, who rescues the man left for dead by washing his wounds of sin away with wine, anointing him with oil, and taking him to an …
