منذ أن نشأت الكنيسة كمؤسّسة مستقلّة عن السلطة السياسيّة، وهي في الوقت نفسه تعلن رسالة تتعلّق بالإنسان والمجتمع البشري، أصبحت علاقتها بالدولة إشكاليّة لا مفرّ منها. فلا يمكن للسلطة السياسيّة أن تتجاهل الكنيسة، كما لا يمكن للكنيسة أن تتّخذ موقف اللامبالاة تجاه السلطة السياسيّة. غير أنّ رسم حدود نشاط كلٍّ من المؤسّستين ليس بالأمر اليسير، ولا سيّما عندما يتعلّق الأمر بتحديد غاية السلطة السياسيّة نفسها. لكن هذه العلاقة المتقلّبة، بسبب الظروف المتغيّرة للحياة الإنسانيّة، يمكن أن تكون حيويّة للمجتمع. ويتوسّع الكاتب في هذه الإشكاليّات في ضوء خبرة الكنيسة الكاثوليكيّة داخل المجتمع الواحد.‏

تتناول المقالة ركائز التصوّف المسيحي والتصوّف الفرنسيسكاني، مبرزة الرؤى المشتركة بينهما. ينطلق التصوّف المسيحي من صميم الحياة الدينيّة بوصفه تجربة روحيّة وجدانيّة تتّسم بها الأديان السماويّة كافّة، حيث تسعى إلى تحقيق الاتّحاد مع الله عبر التأمّل والصلاة في ثلاث مراحل. أمّا التصوّف الفرنسيسكاني، المرتبط بالقدّيس فرنسيس، فيتميّز بالتواضع والفقر الروحي والبحث عن الله من خلال الممارسات البسيطة كالصلاة والصوم. وعلى الرغم من تقاربهما في الروحانيّة، يختلفان في أساليبهما وممارساتهما الروحيّة.‏

This paper uses terminology from The Catholic Imagination by Andrew Greeley to explore the influence of Catholicism on the writings of Oscar Wilde and J.R.R. Tolkien. Greeley asserts that Catholics see metaphors for the transcendent in matter, value community within a well-ordered hierarchy, and sanctify suffering—qualities that abound in the writings of Wilde and Tolkien. I begin with short biographical sketches of both authors, paying special attention to Wilde’s and Tolkien’s varied involvement with orthodox Catholicism. Camilo Peralta’s The Wizard of Mecosta gives the first detailed look at Russell Kirk’s fiction, from his ghost stories to his three gothic novels. While the work particularly emphasizes Kirk’s gothic influences, Peralta also explores references to T.S. Eliot and Charles Williams in his fiction, as well as comments in his nonfiction about Lewis and Williams writing “tales of the preternatural.” The discussion provides important material for seeing Kirk as an Inklings-influenced author.

The virtuosic complexity of Afro-Cuban orisha music has led scholars and artists to enshrine it as a “classical” tradition, and it has become one of most iconic and closely-studied sacred music traditions of the historical Afro-Atlantic. This essay traces the legacies of several analog-era multimedia technologies in orisha music traditions: reel-to-reel and cassette tapes; limited edition and out-of-print books and phonograph discs; ephemeral texts such as album liner notes; and photographic negatives, prints, and slides.
