The Moderating Effects Of Positive Religious/Spiritual Coping On Teachers’ Pain And Stress, Dawn Green
The Moderating Effects Of Positive Religious/Spiritual Coping On Teachers’ Pain And Stress, Dawn Green
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The objective of this internet-based survey was to investigate the effects of positive religious or spiritual coping strategies on teachers’ chronic pain reports. Teachers in the United States may represent a vulnerable group due to a high prevalence of risk factors for chronic pain conditions. Teachers have been identified to experience high stress (Johnson, et al., 2005; Kyriacou, 2001) and report poor job satisfaction (Wang, Hall, & Rahimi, 2015), which are associated with development of chronic pain conditions (Kopec & Sayre, 2004). Religious coping strategies have been associated with beneficial associations with stress and health (Reutter & Bigatti, 2014). The …

Sense And Sensibility: A Sermon On Living The Examined Life, Sarah J. Mejias
Sense And Sensibility: A Sermon On Living The Examined Life, Sarah J. Mejias
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Jane Austen’s novels remain an essential component of the literary canon, but her first published novel, Sense and Sensibility, is frequently neglected. However, in Sense and Sensibility is the genesis of Austen’s technique through which her major characters cultivate and reveal a strong inner life, demonstrated through the character of Elinor Dashwood. This technique is a characteristic she incorporates in each of her succeeding novels. Her approach to literature centers on the interiority of her characters and their ability to change, but it her first novel Austen takes a unique approach. Following the structure of an eighteenth-century sermon, Austen …

The Good Life: Descriptors Of Change In Roma Pentecostal Communities In Serbia And Croatia, Melody J. Wachsmuth
The Good Life: Descriptors Of Change In Roma Pentecostal Communities In Serbia And Croatia, Melody J. Wachsmuth
Spiritus: ORU Journal of Theology
Studies in specific geographical contexts have shown that the spread of Pentecostalism’s impact on Roma communities is twofold: it is linked to social change including a rise of education levels, literacy, decrease in crime, better relationships with the majority culture, and also is instrumental in the fostering of a “trans-national” identity and revitalization of their respective Roma identities. However, Pentecostalism cannot be considered a formula that intersects with a Romani community with consequential predictable results— in fact, in Southeastern Europe, Romani Pentecostalism is growing at a much slower rate than that of its counterparts in Western Europe and in places …
Poverty Reduction As A Christian Call: A View On Microfinance Loans From Pentecostal Churches In Zambia, Irene Banda
Poverty Reduction As A Christian Call: A View On Microfinance Loans From Pentecostal Churches In Zambia, Irene Banda
Spiritus: ORU Journal of Theology
The impact of microfinance activities in reducing poverty has received mixed reviews. Some studies show positive impact while others show increasing criticism towards practices considered deleterious to poor people’s welfare. There are similar opinions amongst Pentecostal churches in Zambia. These churches acknowledge the usefulness of microfinance, but because of negative experiences, they are concerned about its efficacy. The general observation of these churches is that spiritual maturity helps those living in poverty identify the root causes, and are therefore able to plan tangible ways out of poverty. They assert that when people grow spiritually and biblical principles like those in …
Jesus’ Mother “Treasured All These Words . . . In Her Heart” (Luke 2:19): On Using A Spirit Hermeneutic To Reflect Together About Mary, Sally Jo Shelton
Jesus’ Mother “Treasured All These Words . . . In Her Heart” (Luke 2:19): On Using A Spirit Hermeneutic To Reflect Together About Mary, Sally Jo Shelton
Spiritus: ORU Journal of Theology
A major issue over which many Evangelicals and Pentecostals differ from Roman Catholics is the status of Mary, Jesus’ mother. Evangelicals critique some of the Marian dogmas and practices as excesses that challenge Christ’s sole mediation and eclipse the Spirit, while Catholics warn that neglect of Mary potentially leads to failure to acknowledge Christ’s full humanity and divinity. This is a proposal to place Spirit hermeneutics into ecumenical service to bridge the gap between the Catholic and Evangelical Marys. The Spirit hermeneutics proposed here is built on Amos Yong’s (and other Pentecostal scholars’) Word-Spirit-Community epistemology, Catholic philosopher Bernard Lonergan’s call …
Wisdom Pneumatology And The Creative Spirit: The Book Of Wisdom And The Trinitarian Act Of Creation, Jeffrey Lamp
Wisdom Pneumatology And The Creative Spirit: The Book Of Wisdom And The Trinitarian Act Of Creation, Jeffrey Lamp
Spiritus: ORU Journal of Theology
Recent interest in Trinitarian theology has given rise to consideration of the act of creation as a Trinitarian act. Focus on the Father and the Son in the act of creation is abundantly attested in this scholarship. However, consideration of the place of the Spirit in the creative act is somewhat underdeveloped. Th is article delves more deeply into the Spirit’s role in creation by looking at wisdom and spirit language in the deuterocanonical Wisdom of Solomon. In the early chapters of the book, wisdom is characterized as a kindly spirit that brings life and penetrates all things, human and …
Tragedy Of Spirit-Empowered Heroes: A Close Look At Samson And Saul, Wonsuk Ma
Tragedy Of Spirit-Empowered Heroes: A Close Look At Samson And Saul, Wonsuk Ma
Spiritus: ORU Journal of Theology
This study is motivated by the ongoing dilemma of the ethical failures among well-known leaders of the modern Pentecostal/Charismatic movements. Through a close look at Saul and Samson, the two charismatic leaders of the Old Testament who have the most frequent references to the Spirit of God, the study probes the internal and private layers of their experience with the Spirit of God. The intention of the Spirit’s presence includes both an internal transformation as well as external tasks. The scriptural evidence demonstrates that there is no less work of the Spirit for the internal working of the recipients than …

Oral Roberts: Son Of Pentecostalism, Father Of The Charismatic Movement, Vinson Synan
Spiritus: ORU Journal of Theology
Oral Roberts was one of the most important religious figures of the twentieth century. He was born and raised in the Pentecostal Holiness Church, hence, a “son” of the Pentecostal movement. He first became famous as a Pentecostal preacher who conducted large healing crusades under his huge tent. By the 1960s, he became the best known Pentecostal in the world, founding Oral Roberts University in 1965. In the last part of his life, Roberts became a father of the charismatic movement in the mainline churches through his television ministry. For nineteen years, Roberts was a member of the United Methodist …
