“I Want To Live”: The Spirit Of The Incarnation And Theologies Liberating Refugee Women, Eilis Ann Mcculloh Jan 2018

“I Want To Live”: The Spirit Of The Incarnation And Theologies Liberating Refugee Women, Eilis Ann Mcculloh

Masters Essays

In the Catholic sphere, Liberation Theology is one practice that theologians and the faithful have used to promote the dignity and humanity of all people. Liberation Theology involves a praxis to overturn the status quo and bring abundant life to the Anawim. 2 In today’s world of on-going war and an increased economic divide between first- and third-world countries, refugee women can be considered modern-day Anawim. They are, indeed, the closest to Jesus Christ, who stands with them in their struggle for life and gives them strength to continue. Traditionally, liberation theology has provided a theological framework to discuss social …

"Traditioning" Blackness: A Theo-Ethical Analysis Of Black Identity In Black Theological Discourse, Ben Sanders Iii Jan 2018

"Traditioning" Blackness: A Theo-Ethical Analysis Of Black Identity In Black Theological Discourse, Ben Sanders Iii

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The emergence of James Cone's black liberation theology in the late-1960s and early 1970s marked both a radical challenge to and a historical transformation of the fields of religious and theological studies. Building on Cone's work, black theological discourse has developed a rich tradition of religious and academic inquiry characterized by its commitment to interpreting Christianity in particular, and religious experience more broadly, from the vantage point of oppressed black people. This dissertation shows that James Cone developed a particular understanding of black identity in his early works and, furthermore, that various scholars have critically engaged this conception of black …

15, The Flight Into Egypt, Jereme Shaver

Kerver Book of Hours: 2018 Senior Capstone

The flight of Holy Family into Egypt and their eventual return was interpreted by the Gospel writer Matthew as the fulfillment the prophecy of Hosea. An image of this biblical event is located on sig. i8 of Thielman Kerver’s 1507 Book of Hours, in the Vespers section, which are the evening prayers at the end of the Hours of the Virgin. This essay discusses the rich symbolism included in this illustration.

Review Of Administrative Records, Volume 1: The Council Of Fifty, Minutes, March 1844–January 1846, Edited By Matthew J. Grow, Ronald K. Esplin, Mark Ashurst- Mcgee, Gerrit J. Dirkmaat, And Jeffrey D. Mahas., Kathleen Flake

Mormon Studies Review

A long-awaited publication, The Council of Fifty, Minutes, March 1844–January 1846 does not disappoint. It comprises contemporaneous notes, most of them verbatim, of deliberations by a religious council charged with devising a millennial government for the Mormon faithful and the non-Mormon righteous. Minutes gives a uniquely intimate view of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ efforts to account for religious diversity in its idealized kingdom of God to be organized in preparation for Christ’s return. Council members became demoralized by the death of founder Joseph Smith, and the record quickly turns into an account of the Council’s efforts …

Is Faith Compatible With Reason?, Daniel C. Peterson Jan 2018

Is Faith Compatible With Reason?, Daniel C. Peterson

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

In this article I argue that faith is not only rationally justifiable but also inescapable simply because our decisions regarding ultimate questions must necessarily be made under conditions of objective uncertainty. I review remarks by several prominent thinkers on the subject — both avowed atheists and several writers who have addressed the challenge implicit in issues related to faith and reason. I end my discussion by citing William James, who articulated clearly the choices we must make in addressing these “ultimate questions.”

Toward A More Loving Assessment Practice, Ellen Ballock Jan 2018

Toward A More Loving Assessment Practice, Ellen Ballock

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

One distinguishing mark of the Christ-follower is meant to be love - for God and for neighbor. What does this mean in the context of our everyday work as teachers or teacher educators? This paper specifically explores the relevance of loving heart attitudes for assessing student work. This paper first provides a conceptual foundation to justify taking up a lens of love while looking at student work and then reports on findings from a self-study of my own assessment practice. This paper highlights the importance of moment by moment disciplined choice to look away from self and self-interest towards the …

Disciple-Making: Key Ingredients For Building God’S Kingdom, Sid Emory Jan 2018

Disciple-Making: Key Ingredients For Building God’S Kingdom, Sid Emory

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The first century Church was founded in response to the disciple-making processes of Jesus. His disciples were transformed by following Jesus in a way that obedience, transformation, community, education, worship, and the expansion of God’s kingdom became the central themes of their lives. This study addressed the need to understand the disciple-making process found in Scripture in a way that will yield the results that are found in the Book of Acts primarily those found in Acts 2:42-47. Christian churches of every denomination, tradition, model, and size have been called to make disciples. The Scripture, literature, interviews, and surveys researched …

The Power Of Resurrection: Early Christian Resistance Through The Rise Of Disciplinary Power, Patrick G. Stefan Jan 2018

The Power Of Resurrection: Early Christian Resistance Through The Rise Of Disciplinary Power, Patrick G. Stefan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is an analysis of the spread of Christianity in the first three centuries and the commensurate activation and development of what Michel Foucault calls disciplinary mechanisms of power. It sets out to explore two questions, first, what were the theoretical conditions that led to Christianity's rapid expansion? And second, what were the historical precursors to the mechanisms of disciplinary power? It then seeks to put these two questions together to propose that early Christianity was successful in overtaking the Roman Imperial government because it activated underlying disciplinary mechanisms of power in a world governed and controlled by sovereign …

Pastoral Leadership For The Small, Rural Church: The Second Career Pastor, Randall C. Nichols Jan 2018

Pastoral Leadership For The Small, Rural Church: The Second Career Pastor, Randall C. Nichols

Doctor of Ministry

Due to financial and demographic factors plus a shortage of qualified candidates, small, rural churches often struggle to secure and retain pastoral leadership. An examination of these problems from the perspective of the church and that of pastoral candidates reveals the remoteness of location among small, rural churches creates an inability to attract candidates. Faced with college loan indebtedness, young growing families, and the need for full employment for spouses, candidates feel unable to accept a call from a small, rural church. The dissertation reviews the origins of the church, the historical prevalence of the small, rural church, and the …

Crossing Lines/Weaving Lives: Storytelling As A Means Of Building Bridges Across The Progressive/Conservative Divide, Jennifer Yocum Jan 2018

Crossing Lines/Weaving Lives: Storytelling As A Means Of Building Bridges Across The Progressive/Conservative Divide, Jennifer Yocum

Doctor of Ministry

Christians in the United States have been divided against each other since before the Pilgrims touched dry land and Plymouth Rock. These divisions have created disaster in their wake, ranging from literal witch hunts in the early Massachusetts colony, to religiously fueled engagements in World War I, through to the continuing battles over sexuality, civil rights, and the American Christian exceptionalism that exist today. While the divisions are not new, our contemporary context suggests that these divisions themselves, even more than the subjects over which Christians are divided, are creating mortal danger to the body of Christ as a whole. …

The Jesus Quotient: Iq -> Eq -> Aq, Jennie A. Harrop Jan 2018

The Jesus Quotient: Iq -> Eq -> Aq, Jennie A. Harrop

Doctor of Ministry

While we have discussed home churches and missional community involvement in recent decades, we have done little to acknowledge that the vernacular Tim Keller calls us to is nearly impossible to achieve in a culture that is deeply entrenched with biblical mythologies. How do we speak without raising walls of assumption, judgment, defensiveness, or anger? How do we assess the criticisms or hurt of others if we cannot identify our own? Jesus did not ponder IQ or EQ. He knew his God-given purpose and emotional character so deeply that he was able to operate out of those foundations without pausing …

Reviving Aspects Of Ateetee: An Arsi Oromo Women's Musical Ritual To Empower Women To Protect Their Human Rights And Participate In Society's Social And Religious Life, Talilee B. Fiqruu Jan 2018

Reviving Aspects Of Ateetee: An Arsi Oromo Women's Musical Ritual To Empower Women To Protect Their Human Rights And Participate In Society's Social And Religious Life, Talilee B. Fiqruu

Doctor of Ministry

In the Arsi Oromo society, prior to the introduction of organized religions and subsequent colonization by Abyssinian rulers, women had been leading a cultural musical institution called ateetee. It is organized and performed by married women for the purposes of empowering and protecting their interests and the interests of their community. For instance, if a husband violates her well-being, other women would gather in front of the man’s house, confront him to admit his fault, and require of him forgiveness. Women also play a great role in bringing peace and reconciliation between warring clans in a non-threatening way, simply by …

Living Through Terror And Terror Through Living: The Biopolitical Dimensions Of Religion, Security, And Terrorism, Donnie Featherston Jan 2018

Living Through Terror And Terror Through Living: The Biopolitical Dimensions Of Religion, Security, And Terrorism, Donnie Featherston

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Recent emphasis and attention by thinkers, media pundits, and politicians on terrorism requires new, critical evaluation of the processes by which terrorism is understood. By investigating the concept of biopolitics, as developed specifically through Michel Foucault and Giorgio Agamben, new insights into the interactions between terrorism, politics, and religion can emerge. Most notably, the attempts to explain terror as simply an economic problem, an excessive form of violence, and/or as religious fervency gone awry rely on embedded biopolitical concepts. The continual attempts to solve terrorism through increased biopolitical strategies, thereby making terrorism a problem for biopolitics, only further substantiate the …

A History Of Nondenominational Churches In Denver And Beyond, 1945–2000, R. Norton Herbst Jan 2018

A History Of Nondenominational Churches In Denver And Beyond, 1945–2000, R. Norton Herbst

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

From 1945-2000, nondenominational churches in America developed from a scattering of independent congregations to one of the largest groups of churches in the nation. Few scholars have studied these churches as a cohesive movement. And many think they burst onto the American scene around the 1990s, though statistics suggest otherwise. Two questions, therefore, need to be addressed: What is the historical genealogy of nondenominational churches in modern America? And, is there a recognizable nondenominational church identity?

This study explores these questions in three ways. First, I survey the origins and development of Protestant denominationalism from the Reformation through the early …

Review Of Making Lamanites: Mormons, Native Americans, And The Indian Student Placement Program, 1947–2000, By Matthew Garrett, Sujey Vega Jan 2018

Review Of Making Lamanites: Mormons, Native Americans, And The Indian Student Placement Program, 1947–2000, By Matthew Garrett, Sujey Vega

Mormon Studies Review

Matthew Garrett begins his history of the Mormon Indian Student Placement Program (ISPP) with a narrative about his own family’s participation and what it meant for him to find an old picture of a young Native American student among his family photos. Thus, Garrett starts his history through this personal connection. Like many historical monographs, however, it moves toward a more seemingly objective stance that provides information without much reflection. While there is peppered subtle critique of the LDS Church’s representation of Native Americans in its doctrine, the ISPP is rescued from much reproach. The book does provide a much-needed …

Review Of At The Pulpit: 185 Years Of Discourses By Latter-Day Saint Women, Edited By Jennifer Reeder And Kate Holbrook., Beverly W. Palmer Jan 2018

Review Of At The Pulpit: 185 Years Of Discourses By Latter-Day Saint Women, Edited By Jennifer Reeder And Kate Holbrook., Beverly W. Palmer

Mormon Studies Review

In At the Pulpit—an annotated collection of fifty-four discourses given by Mormon women between 1831 and 2016—editors Jennifer Reeder and Kate Holbrook clearly achieve their stated goal of “representing the varied ways that Mormon women have addressed public audiences” (p. xxvii). The earliest speeches included in this book were delivered in the American Midwest until the mid-1840s; after 1852 these addresses were almost entirely given in Utah (exceptions being Liverpool, England, in 1861; Chicago in 1893; Washington, DC, in 1895; and Mexico City in 1972). The fact that speakers came from places like New Zealand and South Africa, for example, …
