C.S. Lewis And Christian Postmodernism: Word, Image, And Beyond. Kyoko Yuasa, Peter G. Epps
C.S. Lewis And Christian Postmodernism: Word, Image, And Beyond. Kyoko Yuasa, Peter G. Epps
Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature
In C. S. Lewis and Christian Postmodernism, Kyoko Yuasa has managed to advance the cause of careful reading and discussion of Lewis’s novels as contemporary cultural artifacts, rather than mere ciphers for apologetics or mere fluff for children, for both Japanese and American audiences. This is no mean feat, not only in terms of translation but also in terms of trans-Pacific discourse, and Yuasa deserves great credit for the accomplishment. Her close reading of several of Lewis’s major fiction works in a comparative frame she derives from works by Iris Murdoch, Muriel Spark, Doris Lessing, and John Fowles yields …

Limited Atonement In 1 John 2:2, Steven Clark
Limited Atonement In 1 John 2:2, Steven Clark
Celebration of Research
Atonement, the theological issue dealing with the precise nature of Christ’s work, is a central doctrine to the Christian faith and yet it is one which historically has not always achieved consensus among theologians. This problem becomes more complicated when we entertain the possibility that different biblical authors may have had competing understandings even within the New Testament canon. This project explores what might happen if we were to interpret 1 John 2:2’s idea of Jesus as an atoning sacrifice for the sins of the whole world in light of Rudolf Bultmann’s basic thesis about the Gospel of John’s view …
Rabbi Eliezer Of Beaugency, Commentaries On Amos And Jonah (With Selections From Isaiah And Ezekiel), Robert A. Harris
Rabbi Eliezer Of Beaugency, Commentaries On Amos And Jonah (With Selections From Isaiah And Ezekiel), Robert A. Harris
TEAMS Commentary Series
Rabbi Eliezer of Beaugency represents the pinnacle of twelfth-century rabbinic exegesis of the Bible. A proponent of the literal school, Eliezer completely abandoned traditional rabbinic midrash in his explication of biblical texts and innovated a literary approach that anticipated the fruits of modern scholarship in virtually every paragraph. This volume presents, for the first time in English translation, an extended window into the oeuvre of this master interpreter.

Another Scientific Revolution: Now Yielding A 'Cosmic Biology' Consistent With Natural Theology, Theodore Walker
Another Scientific Revolution: Now Yielding A 'Cosmic Biology' Consistent With Natural Theology, Theodore Walker
Perkins Faculty Research and Special Events
Beyond the Copernican revolution, another scientific revolution is now in process. Inspired by Sir Fred Hoyle and others, this contemporary extension of the Copernican revolution is replacing biology conceived as exclusively Earth science with biology conceived as including study of stellar evolution and cosmic evolution. Furthermore, astrobiology, panspermia, and cosmic biology (Hoyle and Wickramasinghe) are advancing in ways consistent with natural theology, especially with panentheism. Some of this was anticipated and advocated by Alfred North Whitehead, Charles Hartshorne, and other philosophers of nature.
Don't Call King A 'Civil Rights' Leader: Toward Abolishing Poverty And War By Correcting Our Fatally Inadequate Remembering Of Mlk Jr., Theodore Walker
Don't Call King A 'Civil Rights' Leader: Toward Abolishing Poverty And War By Correcting Our Fatally Inadequate Remembering Of Mlk Jr., Theodore Walker
Perkins Faculty Research and Special Events
Remembering Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.—primarily as a domestic “civil rights” leader—is inadequate, and sometimes harmful. The term “civil rights” fails to embrace King’s abolitionist movements toward the global abolition of poverty and war. Moreover, King was a Baptist preacher called by God. He advanced an optimistic realism (including a “realistic pacifism”) that improves upon pessimistic-cynical versions of political realism. And King went beyond advancing “civil rights” to advancing economic justice, economic rights, and human rights. He prescribed adding a social and economic bill of rights to the US Constitution, plus full-employment supplemented by “guaranteed income,” …
Servant Learners: Short-Term Missions As An Effective Strategy, Abigail Chennells
Servant Learners: Short-Term Missions As An Effective Strategy, Abigail Chennells
Senior Honors Theses
Short-term missions (STM) is a phenomenon that is quickly growing; each year more and more teams are sent out from North America to locations across the globe to share the gospel and do work projects in another culture. However, there are some significant issues with the current execution of STM, ranging from its ineffectiveness in accomplishing helpful projects to its heavy financial cost to the potential negative impact on host communities. In order to push the impact of STM in a positive direction, there are two major shifts in the way it is carried out that must take place. First, …
The Cost And Value Of Your Education, T. Perry Hildreth
The Cost And Value Of Your Education, T. Perry Hildreth
Journal of Counseling and Psychology
This brief address explores the issue of the dominance of the economical way of valuing education over a more traditional idea of education as moral formation. An education in a Christian liberal arts university uniquely gives priority to the idea that education should shape the student's moral understanding and consequent actions. The address is an invitation to consider how one, professionally and personally, might serve members of a culture shaped largely by the idea that human meaning and purpose are reducible to economic value as merely producers and consumers.

"But A Woman Who Fears The Lord Is To Be Praised": A Practical Vision In Proverbs 31, Ye Jin Jeon
"But A Woman Who Fears The Lord Is To Be Praised": A Practical Vision In Proverbs 31, Ye Jin Jeon
Honors Theses
Proverbs begins with an exposition on what the "fear of the Lord" entails and ends with the description of the woman of noble character who fears the Lord (Prov. 31:30). Since few scholars have considered the woman of Prov. 31 in connection to the "fear of the Lord." this project overviews aspects of the "fear of the Lord" in the Old Testament, including all specific verses contacting the phrase, and examines the significance of their connections with Prov. 31. The contributions of this study include theological and practical implications of what it means to live a life fearing the Lord.

An Evaluation Of Footwashing As Practiced By The Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Hadid J. Cortez
An Evaluation Of Footwashing As Practiced By The Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Hadid J. Cortez
Honors Theses
My goal in conducting this honors thesis is to find the biblical, theological, and historical reasons for why Seventh-day Adventists perform footwashing and the Lord's Supper in the same ceremony. A more thorough analysis of the scriptural texts depicting footwashing and the Lord's Supper could help us discern whether there is a strong thematic connection that justifies their joining into one ceremony. Additionally, research into the origins of the practice of footwashing within the Early Christian Church and the Early Seventh-day Adventist Church will help us discern whether the way that the Seventh-day Adventist Church performs communion is based on …

The Transition Of Papal Politicization As Demonstrated Through Pope Gregory Ix And His Adversaries In The Thirteenth Century, Emily Northcutt
The Transition Of Papal Politicization As Demonstrated Through Pope Gregory Ix And His Adversaries In The Thirteenth Century, Emily Northcutt
History ETDs
Gregory IX (pope 1227-41) asserted his papal authority over secular and religious leaders in an attempt to showcase the strength of the church. His pontificate took place between those of the famous Innocent III (1198-1216) and the powerful Innocent IV (1243-54), meaning that Gregory’s accomplishments are often overshadowed. This thesis aims to prove that Gregory is a worthy protagonist and a worthy subject of study in his own right. Comparing Gregory’s pontificate to those of his immediate predecessor and successor highlights the shifting nature of Gregory’s priorities. This work examines Gregory’s relationship with Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II regarding crusades …
The Lord's Prayer As A Transformative Pattern, Paul N. Anderson
The Lord's Prayer As A Transformative Pattern, Paul N. Anderson
Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology
Do you struggle with your prayer life? I do, and I think most people do as well. Jesus challenged his disciples in the garden: Could you not wait with me [in prayer] one hour? I have trouble with five minutes! If you’re like me, upon entering a time of personal prayer you might find your mind wandering or yourself thinking about the demands of the day. Things to do, concerns about loved ones, pressures of the day, a twinge of guilt about an insensitive remark or a selfish deed —these distractions interrupt my prayer time; I imagine I’m not alone. …

حقيقة رؤية الملائكة في الدنيا The Fact Of Seeing The Angels In This World - A Doctrinal Study, Atallah Bakhit Al-Maaytah
Jordan Journal of Islamic Studies
Allah almighty has created numerous creatures and that is for wisdom. Amongst these worlds is the honored angels. Believers believe in the angels as they believe in their Creator. Knowledge concerning the angels; their existence, characteristics and jobs, came as revelation from Allah to the prophets via Jibreel peace be upon him. The most important issue regarding the angles which, I believe, has not been thoroughly examined is seeing them in this world. I have collected relevant facts and I have not found strong evidence except what are mentioned in the Qur'an and the Prophetic Sunnah as well as scholars' …

Therefore, scholars of Islamic Fiqh have differed among themselves as for the legitimacy of celebrating this occasion. مخاطر الاستثمار في المصارف الإسلامية الأردنية دراسة تطبيقية لعقود (المضاربة، والمشاركة، والاستصناع) Risks Of Investing In The Jordanian Islamic Banks - An Applied Study Of The Contracts Of (Profit And Loss Sharing, Joint Venture, And Manufacturing Finance), Amjad Salem Latifeh
Jordan Journal of Islamic Studies
The main aim of the study reporting in the article below was to survey the main threats that Jordanian Islamic banks face in three types of investment contracts: “Mudaraba” (Profit-and-loss sharing), Musharakah (joint venture) and Istisna (Manufacturing Finance). After analyzing the data both quantitatively and qualitatively, it has turned out to us that the current Islamic banking system is probably powerless in identifying and therefore measuring the real cost of these three types of investment contracts, which are definitely risky investment avenues. What is worth noting here is that almushtagaat almaaliah (financial derivatives) negatively affects the cost of investment in …
