Exploring And Re-Envisioning The Significance Of Agrarian Consciousness In Theology With Specific Reference To Kerala, Jinto George May 2020

Exploring And Re-Envisioning The Significance Of Agrarian Consciousness In Theology With Specific Reference To Kerala, Jinto George

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Globalization has a great impact on present-day society. Everything and everyone relates to each other based on market value. The commodification of agriculture and food has led the world into a situation where one lacks intimacy and bond in the relationship. The impact of globalization has influenced the present Kerala community. The monocultural systems of globalization have influenced the community which has led the Kerala society into a commodified society. The commodification of agriculture and food has influenced the patterns of relationships in the Kerala society, especially in their ecological, human, and spiritual relationship.

God did not create a world …

Savoring The Moon: Japanese Prints Of The Floating World, Madison B. Dalton May 2020

Savoring The Moon: Japanese Prints Of The Floating World, Madison B. Dalton

Senior Honors Projects, 2020-current

Guided by the Director of the Madison Art Collection and Lisanby Museum, Virginia Soenksen,I served as the Curatorial Assistant for the Lisanby Museum’s forthcoming exhibition Savoring the Moon: Japanese Prints of the Floating World. The exhibition will highlight the Madison ArtCollection’s impressive Japanese woodblock prints in the ukiyo-e style. Ukiyo-e translates to“pictures of the floating world.” This style proliferated in Japan during the Edo period (1603 - 1868) and Meiji period (1868 - 1912), with visual themes that ranged from flora and fauna, Japanese ceremonies, kabuki actors, mythology, courtesans, and cultural pastimes. The estate of Charles Alvin Lisanby gifted over …

A Theoretical Perspective Of Culturally Responsive Andragogy For International English Learners In American Higher Education Institutions, Marcia P. Livingston-Galloway, Janet George May 2020

A Theoretical Perspective Of Culturally Responsive Andragogy For International English Learners In American Higher Education Institutions, Marcia P. Livingston-Galloway, Janet George

Journal of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning for Christians in Higher Education

“Higher education institutions throughout the United States and other countries are experiencing signifi cant increases in the number of international students enrolled at their campuses” (Washburn & Hargis, 2017, p. 2). However, the rate of growth for this cohort of culturally, linguistically, economically, and ethnically diverse (CLEED) students exceeds the rate of faculty preparation and capacity to effectively serve their needs. Statistical evidence corroborates the view of Enright (2011) and others that today’s diverse student body is now “the ‘new mainstream’ of the 21st century classroom” (p. 80). Research in the last two decades points to a real need for …

Q&A: A Career In Christian Higher Education: An Interview, Linda Gray May 2020

Q&A: A Career In Christian Higher Education: An Interview, Linda Gray

Journal of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning for Christians in Higher Education

Much has changed in U.S. culture since the 1970s, requiring teachers to adjust their methods of reaching students who are markedly different from their parents’ generation. But through the decades, Christian educators have tried to demonstrate God’s love through caring, patience, knowledge, and commitment, and in a Christian institution, they also seek to bring a Christian worldview to their students. But if some students at Christian universities are not believers nor seekers and when students lack basic biblical knowledge, teachers in Christian institutions must adjust their teaching methods. Online teaching creates even more challenges as students and teachers can see …

Welcoming Unfamiliar Voices In Familiar Spaces: How Can Christian Colleges And Universities Respond To Their Graduate Populations Whose Faith Affiliation Is Different From That Of The School’S?, Ruth Givens May 2020

Welcoming Unfamiliar Voices In Familiar Spaces: How Can Christian Colleges And Universities Respond To Their Graduate Populations Whose Faith Affiliation Is Different From That Of The School’S?, Ruth Givens

Journal of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning for Christians in Higher Education

Th is grant project surveyed students’ experiences from different faith affiliations (or none) who attended Christian graduate programs, asking how they navigated the university’s Christian worldview and language in light of their own beliefs (or non-belief). The goal was to conduct a small pilot study to explore how Christian universities with a definitively Christian ethos could maintain their identity but shift their paradigm from discipleship in their undergraduate schools to a mission field in their graduate schools. This project targeted schools with a definitively Christian undergraduate program but who opened their enrollment to graduate students of all faiths. To access …

Replenishing Qualities Of Prayer, Morgan A. Kennon May 2020

Replenishing Qualities Of Prayer, Morgan A. Kennon

Honors College Theses

Abstract

This study focused on the cognitive realm of self-control, which includes attention control and problem-solving. We used a challenging cognitive task to induce ego depletion, defined as the loss of self-control subsequent to exercising control. After removing students’ self-control in a laboratory setting, we tested whether prayer could possibly replenish lost self-control. Prior research has indicated that prayer may invoke self-control, and religious individuals report higher levels of self-control overall. Although prayer failed to return lost self-control in the current study, results provided additional support for a positive relationship between self-reported religiosity/spirituality and self-control.

A Preferential Option For God: A Catholic Feminist Argument For Not Throwing The Baby Out With The Bathwater, Jane A. Terlesky May 2020

A Preferential Option For God: A Catholic Feminist Argument For Not Throwing The Baby Out With The Bathwater, Jane A. Terlesky

LMU Theses and Dissertations

In this paper I explore what Catholic feminist Ignatian spirituality can contribute to the conversation between faith and culture, conversation that is too often muddied by vague and superficial argument and by an ‘us’ vs ‘them’ attitude driven by extremes to which the majority do not belong. The secular and the religious spring from a common past, though they exist now within the nova effect of spiritualities available today in our modern Western or North Atlantic, “secular 3” world. The 500-year-old Ignatian Exercises can be a coherent voice speaking in the cacophony of the contemporary context especially when a feminist …

Evangelizing A Nation: Catholic Priests In America, Christopher J. Wild May 2020

Evangelizing A Nation: Catholic Priests In America, Christopher J. Wild

The Review: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Research

According to the most recent statistics provided by the American bishops, there are an astonishing seventy million Catholics who call the United States home. Five hundred years ago, there was not a single Roman Catholic to be found anywhere in this vast expanse of forests, prairies, and mountains. (Moreover, presumably no one living at that time in what is now the United States had any knowledge of Jesus Christ, for the episcopacy of Erik Gnupsson in twelfth century Greenland hardly resulted in any evangelization of the Christian faith in the western hemisphere.) As the European authorities competed to establish colonies …

Circling The Elephant: A Comparative Theology Of Religious Diversity [Table Of Contents], John J. Thatamanil May 2020

Circling The Elephant: A Comparative Theology Of Religious Diversity [Table Of Contents], John J. Thatamanil

Religion

Christian theologians have for some decades affirmed that they have no monopoly on encounter with God or ultimate reality; other religions also have access to religious truth and transformation. If so, the time has come for Christians not just to learn about but also from their religious neighbors. Circling the Elephant affirms that the best way to move toward the mystery of divinity is to move toward the mystery of the neighbor.

In this book, Thatamanil employs the ancient Indian allegory of the elephant and blindfolded men to argue for the integration of three, often-separated theological projects: comparative theology, constructive …

Living With Tiny Aliens: The Image Of God For The Anthropocene [Table Of Contents], Adam Pryor May 2020

Living With Tiny Aliens: The Image Of God For The Anthropocene [Table Of Contents], Adam Pryor

Religion

Astrobiology is changing how we understand meaningful human existence. As astrobiologically aware human beings, we must confront our deepened anxiety arising in the face of our own contingency—realizing how deeply tethered we are to the moments this pale blue dot exists in the universe. At the same time, our astrobiological awareness is opening a horizon to the exciting possibility of understanding our humanity in relation not only to a planet burgeoning with life, but a cosmos pregnant with living-possibilities.

Touching upon both these issues, this work provides an approach to astrobiological humanities: helping figure expressive modes by which human beings …

The Lantern And The Sword, Michael Chisholm May 2020

The Lantern And The Sword, Michael Chisholm

Master of Arts in Professional Writing Capstones

A creation myth of a new universe where brother deities of light and darkness battle for dominance. Light creates a Lantern to illuminate all reality and Darkness creates a Sword to help control the extent of the light. The god of light then creates a champion to lead his forces against his dark brother and the war intensifies. In his struggle the champion discovered he could control not only light but the darkness as well. He created a dark fire with great power to match the deities. Light and darkness come together and create peace and a balance. The champion …

(Re-)Making The State: Religious Zionism, Religious Violence, And Israel In The 21st Century, Abe Asher May 2020

(Re-)Making The State: Religious Zionism, Religious Violence, And Israel In The 21st Century, Abe Asher

Religious Studies Honors Projects

Israel’s triumph and seizure of land in the Six-Day War paved the way for a religious Zionist movement based around territorial conquest exemplified by the ideology of Meir Kahane. Over the next 30 years, but particularly during the Oslo period in the mid-1990s, that movement organized and used targeted religious violence to gain power and solidify its place in Israeli society. Building on Shaul Magid’s work, I propose that Kahane’s ethics of violence have been adopted by or allowed to flourish within the modern State of Israel — a response to historic and present Jewish precarity centered on ethnocentric survival.

The Transition Of Guanyin: Reinterpreting Queerness And Buddha Nature In Medieval East Asia, Robert Wilf May 2020

The Transition Of Guanyin: Reinterpreting Queerness And Buddha Nature In Medieval East Asia, Robert Wilf

Religious Studies Honors Papers

Avalokitesvara, better known by the Chinese name of Guanyin, is perhaps the second most pervasive figure in all of Buddhism after the historical Buddha himself. Part of this popularity comes from his adaptability and willingness to change to order to save everyone, no matter what part of society they might be from. It is thanks to this adaptability that Guanyin’s iconography varies wildly by region, with much of Theravada and tantric Buddhism depicting him as a man, while Mahayana Buddhism tends to revere her as the patron of women. From their earliest description, Guanyin was known to transcend boundaries to …

Piety And Mayhem: How Extremist Groups Misuse Religious Doctrine To Condone Violence And Achieve Political Goals, Noah Garber May 2020

Piety And Mayhem: How Extremist Groups Misuse Religious Doctrine To Condone Violence And Achieve Political Goals, Noah Garber

Religious Studies Honors Papers

This thesis examines the way in which various groups have used religion as a justification for violent action towards political ends. From the Irgun, which carried out terrorist acts in Palestine, to the Palestinian Islamist organization Hamas, which has waged war on Israel, to the Buddhist leadership of Myanmar, which has waged a genocidal campaign against Rohingya Muslims living in the country, these groups have employed a narrow interpretation of their religious texts as a means to justify the actions they take. It is explained that it is not the compulsion of religious doctrine itself that is to blame, rather, …

Religious Influence On The French Campaign Against Korea Of 1866, Sophie Hargrave May 2020

Religious Influence On The French Campaign Against Korea Of 1866, Sophie Hargrave

Honors Projects

The French Campaign against Korea in 1866 was a relatively minor and unknown conflict in the course of both French and Korean history. However, it offers valuable information about the religious beliefs and value systems that defined the governmental systems of both countries, because it was the French response to the execution of several French Jesuit priests by the Korean government. Korea was largely influenced by three religions in the 19th century: Confucianism, Buddhism, and Shamanism. France had a rich history of Catholicism and a wealth of Jesuit missionaries traveling abroad. The Confucian background of Korea, specifically, influenced its …

Demonology According To The Universal Church Of The Kingdom Of God Three Important Aspects And A Lutheran Response, George Felten May 2020

Demonology According To The Universal Church Of The Kingdom Of God Three Important Aspects And A Lutheran Response, George Felten

Master of Art Theology Thesis

Felten, George, C. “Demonology According to the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God: Three Important Aspects and a Lutheran Response.” MA Thesis, Concordia Seminary, 2020. 145pp.

Demonology should not be the center of a church’s theological center or modus operandi, but it should not be denied or avoided either. While the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God (IURD), a prominent neo-Pentecostal Brazilian church, makes too much of demonology, the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Brazil (IELB) seems to make too little of it. Yet this need not be the case. This thesis will analyze three aspects of IURD’s demonology, …
