Philosophical and theological treatments of Christian prayer regularly overlook its formal stakes. As a type of limit-speech, prayer can be thought alongside the class of logical dilemmas generated whenever an element of a total set refers to the very totality of which it is a part. These dilemmas are grouped together in what Graham Priest calls the “inclosure schema” and, moreover, exhibit a non-self-identical structure that is also the hallmark of robust metaphysical materialisms (i.e., the structure by which matter constitutively fails to coincide with itself). CampbellLoyola University Chicago AN ETHICS OF DOCTRINAL EMERGENCE: READING NEWMAN WITH AUGUSTINE AND CONTEMPORARY INFORMATION THEORY The aim of this essay is to begin the process of a reconfiguration of the theological category of doctrinal development and to integrate an “emergent doctrinal ethics of belief” as an inextricable dimension of this category. Most scholarly writing on doctrinal development has taken place in the wake of the Enlightenment with its focus on epistemology, and doctrine is conceived of as “referencing” a quasi-metaphysical “res.” I attempt to “update” the guiding metaphors of doctrinal development with the goal of moving discussions …

White Enigma: Opacity, Perspective, And The Theological Formation Of White Subjectivity, Nathan David Pederson

I argue that examining the concept of “opacity” can hold together a growing tension in a contemporary phenomenology of whiteness: on the one hand, an insistence that whiteness is subjective and habitual; on the other, the insistence that whiteness is also an active, objective world horizon or ontologizing force that shapes the subject. In making this argument, I explain how the notion of opacity shapes a hermeneutical phenomenology of whiteness that can wrestle with how whiteness hides itself as benign through utilizing a symbolism of evil within theological discourse, even as it can come to function more concretely in the …

Avulsion fractures of the fifth metatarsal bone occur when a portion of the bone is broken or pulled off the rest of the bone. These fractures are often seen in athletes, especially those of a young age. Avulsion fractures of the fifth metatarsal bone are commonly treated non-surgically with immobilization of the foot. There are several different options for immobilization of the foot with no clear result as to which immobilization method is the most effective. What would “The Church” look like if it were constructed by the socially marginalized, specifically queer bodies (modernity’s LGBTQIA+)? The “Catholic theological tradition” has been reticent in its hesitancy of queer theory, reinforcing the rejection of queer faithful and their highly contextual expressions of spirituality. This thesis seeks to build a well-architected theology out from these rejected queer bodies in order to demonstrate the intrinsically disordered’s inherent ordered-ness within the Catholic tradition and experience. Research has established the connection between the academic success of culturally and linguistically diverse students, and their schools’ ability to recruit and retain teachers that reflect such diversity (Shirrell et al., 2019). Studies have also highlighted the criticality of the students’ home language use as a way to enhance academic growth and develop their sociocultural competence and well-being (Feinauer & Howard, 2014). There is no research, however, addressing the differences between the experiences of Hispanic teachers in bilingual Catholic education compared to those in monolingual English Catholic education. This project examines the history of racism in relation to the Catholic Church. This history amounts to an indictment of the Roman Catholic Church not only as a neutral party in the historical emergence of white supremacy, but a directly linked cause of racism. First, it describes how racism emerged in its modern manifestation in three major dimensions which include the geopolitical, economic, and social. Then, it centers on two general forms of analysis, a cultural analysis, and a philosophical analysis. งานวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาวิเคราะห์และเปรียบเทียบติตถิยปริวาสในพระไตรปิฎกกับการรับเข้าอุปสมบทในวัดป่านานาชาติด้วยการศึกษาจากตัวบทและภาคสนาม ผลการศึกษาพบว่า ประเพณีทั้งสองมีความมุ่งหมายคัดกรองบุคคลนอกพุทธศาสนาที่มีความตั้งใจจริง เคารพศรัทธาในพระรัตนตรัย มีคุณสมบัติเหมาะสมที่จะอุปสมบทเป็นพระภิกษุ และสามารถปรับตัวเข้ากับวิถีชีวิตในคณะสงฆ์ เพื่อเป็นพระภิกษุตลอดชีวิต ในขณะเดียวกันก็เป็นโอกาสให้ผู้ขออุปสมบทได้ศึกษาหลักธรรมคำสอนและปรับตัวกับวิถีชีวิตของพระภิกษุด้วย ความแตกต่างสำคัญคือบุคคลที่เข้ามาอุปสมบทในวัดป่านานาชาติเป็นชาวต่างชาติซึ่งไม่คุ้นชินกับวัฒนธรรมพุทธศาสนาไทย กระบวนการรับเข้ามีเป้าหมายเพื่อให้ความรู้และเคยชินกับการใช้ชีวิตตามแนวทางของวัดป่าในไทยซึ่งต้องอยู่อย่างเรียบง่าย ภายใต้อาณัติของพระอาจารย์ จึงต้องใช้ระยะเวลานานกว่าติตถิยปริวาสและไม่แน่นอน ขึ้นอยู่กับคุณสมบัติของแต่ละบุคคล ขั้นตอนที่ซับซ้อนในวัดป่านานาชาติแสดงถึงการประยุกต์ประเพณีในพระไตรปิฎกและประเพณีไทยให้เข้ากับสถานการณ์ปัจจุบัน เพื่อเปิดโอกาสให้บุคคลภายนอกวัฒนธรรมพุทธศาสนาที่ต้องการเข้ามาอุปสมบทได้ทดลองการใช้ชีวิตพระภิกษุในพุทธศาสนา เพื่อประโยชน์ของคณะสงฆ์และบุคคลที่ขออุปสมบทเอง

งานวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อวิเคราะห์อาบัติในภิกขุปาติโมกข์ตามหลักทฤษฎีทางทัณฑวิทยา 2 ทฤษฎี ได้แก่ ทฤษฎีข่มขู่ยับยั้งและทฤษฎีแก้ไขฟื้นฟู และวิเคราะห์ความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างอาบัติและภาคีทั้ง 5 อันได้แก่ ชุมชนสงฆ์ ตัวพระภิกษุ เพื่อนพระภิกษุ คฤหัสถ์นอกคณะสงฆ์ และพระศาสนาตามวัตถุประสงค์ของการบัญญัติพระวินัย 10 ประการ โดยศึกษาจากพระวินัยปิฎกและอรรถกถา ผลการศึกษาพบว่า การลงโทษตามพระวินัยคือการออกจากอาบัติ 3 ลักษณะ อันได้แก่ การพ้นจากสภาพความเป็นพระภิกษุ, การประพฤติวุฏฐานวิธี, และการแสดงอาบัติ สอดคล้องกับหลักการของทฤษฎีทั้งสองโดยที่แยกจากกันไม่ได้ การลงโทษตามทฤษฎีข่มขู่ยับยั้งถือว่าเป็นการตัดโอกาส, เป็นความยุ่งยากและความลำบาก, และการทำให้อับอายตามลำดับ ในขณะที่ในมุมมองของทฤษฎีแก้ไขฟื้นฟูถือว่าเป็นการพ้นจากภิกษุภาวะเพื่อดำรงอยู่ในสถานะอื่นที่เหมาะสม, การแยกตัวผู้ต้องอาบัติออกไปจากพระสงฆ์เพื่ออบรมและขัดเกลาจิตใจ, และ การสำนึกผิด อาบัติอาจพิจารณาให้เป็นทฤษฎีใดก็ได้ ขึ้นอยู่กับความสำนึกของผู้ต้องอาบัติเป็นสำคัญ อาบัติเป็นโทษที่มุ่งข่มขู่พระภิกษุผู้ไม่ละอายให้อยู่ในกฎเกณฑ์ตลอดเวลา ในขณะเดียวกัน อาบัติก็เป็นวิธีการที่เอื้อประโยชน์ต่อพระภิกษุผู้เป็นกัลยาณปุถุชนจนถึงพระอรหันต์ให้ดำรงตนสอดคล้องกับธรรม ภาคีทั้ง 5 ซึ่งเป็นผู้มีส่วนได้เสียจากอาบัติมีบทบาทในการควบคุมความสำรวมในสิกขาบทและในอินทรีย์ของพระภิกษุ การศึกษาแสดงว่า การออกจากอาบัติเป็นการแก้ไขตนเอง เมื่อพระภิกษุต้องอาบัติ ต้องรีบออกจากอาบัติ

Purpose: Ireland is viewed as the shining base for Catholicism. That image is shattered as survivors revealed the abuse in the Magdalene Laundries and Mother and Baby Homes, and sexual abuse by priests. This study aims to examine image repair efforts by the Pope during his August 2018 visit. Design/methodology/approach: Examined against the Letter of His Holiness released days earlier, this study evaluates all the Pope's speeches during his visit to Ireland using the image repair theory (Benoit and Pang, 2008) as its theoretical lens. To be human is to be a member of myriad groups. The universality of groups in our lives poses an important area of study for social scientists investigating human flourishing. Additionally, inquiring into the evolutionary potential of groups may begin to inform new ways of addressing the intractable issues we face as a human species. While most empirical studies of groups focus on group performance, or group doingness, this study explored group beingness and the experience of manifesting deep union and oneness, which is an intersubjective phenomenon that has been called coherence. Today, Black Greek-letter organizations (BGLOs) struggle to use empirical data to address financial burden, elitism, hazing, relevance in social justice issues, and the anti-BGLO movement. The anti-BGLO movement frames this study. The movement stems from beliefs that secret societies, fraternities, and sororities are anti-Christian. Society will continue to question the relevance and importance of BGLOs if they cannot overcome the issues plaguing them. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to ascertain why members are leaving BGLOs, in case the organizations find the anti-BGLO movement to be a threat to organizational vitality. This thesis examines recent finds in Northwest Semitic epigraphy in an effort to determine their effectiveness for speaking to the historical validity of the prose sections of the Book of Jeremiah. In light of the book’s complex compositional issues, many models for understanding its development have been published over the last century; one foundational theory, expounded primarily by Robert P. Carroll, argues that material in Jeremiah apart from chapters 2–26 (Source A) fail to provide an accurate picture of the Historical Jeremiah. This claim is examined in light of Hebrew epigraphy. This paper is an exploration of C.G. Jung’s essay, A Psychological Approach to the Dogma of the Trinity, and how he inadvertently provides a relational psychodynamic lens for working with queer Christian clients who are differentiating from their harmful, embedded theologies. Jung hypothesizes that the Christian Trinity archetype – the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, cannot exist without a fourth member, the Devil, who holds an essential role in the successful differentiation of the Trinity. The relational therapist is called to act as the Devil when working with queer Christian clients - inviting in seemingly mischievous and dangerous thoughts that …

Unreality And Loss Of Self: Dissociative Experiences In Buddhist Practitioners, Jill Loving

On the surface, the Buddhist idea of emptiness and experiences of depersonalization and derealization seem to have significant overlap. Meditations on emptiness in the Buddhist tradition seek to lead meditators to observe the ego as illusory and empty of inherent content as one step in the journey to liberate oneself from suffering. Conversely, dissociation is generally an involuntary, automatic response to severe trauma that can become more common or chronic in an individual over time.
